Michael Young Whiffs; Texas Rangers Lose

Categories: Texas Rangers

Michael Young - Grounder.jpg
Not saying by any means that it was an easy or routine play. As Rangers' manager Ron Washington said, the ball was "smoked." But it's a ball that third baseman Michael Young could've stopped, right?

When Young did the ole on Casper Wells' hot shot in the 7th inning Wednesday night, I was reminded of his similarly unsuccessful attempt at A-Rod's smash in Game 1 of last year's ALCS. Adrian Beltre can make that play, but he's out with a strained hamstring. Chris Davis can make that play, but he's in Baltimore. Brooks Robinson could've made that play, but these days he's 74 years old.

Young? I'm about convinced he can no longer make that play.

"If he came up with it it would have been great," Washington said afterward. "I don't know if I've seen Beltre make that play. He's made a lot of plays. I've seen a lot of third baseman come up with balls like that. Michael just didn't come up with it. But that ball was smoked."

This is not to take reliever Koji Uehara off the hook.

He gave up three hard-hit balls in the 7th and was lucky that Josh Hamilton made a sliding catch on another sinking liner headed for a single. Seemed like catcher Mike Napoli had his glove low and hovering just over the dish before every Uehara delivery, only to have to reach up and catch each ball up in the zone.

Uehara wasn't good. But Young could've saved him, and his team. Instead, Young tried a risky backhand stab of Wells' one-hopper, and wound up allowing it to skid off the heel of his glove for a run-scoring single in a 4-3 loss. He snags it and it's an easy double play. He doesn't, and the Rangers fall to 10-11 since their 12-game winning streak and head out on a 10-game road trip with a 1.5-game lead in the AL West and a key four-game series in Anaheim against the Angels starting Monday.

And whether it's Toronto's Brett Cecil or Minnesota's Brian Duensing or last night Seattle's soft-tossin' Jason Vargas, the Rangers are struggling with mediocre lefties. In his previous seven starts Vargas was 0-6 with a 5.26 ERA, but he had Texas off-balance all night. The Rangers are 47-35 against righties but only 19-17 against lefties.

Those numbrers could've been better, but Young again swung and missed ... in the field.

RW - your lack of "paying attention" concerning the Rangers is showing..

You said, "Young? I'm about convinced he can no longer make that play."

How can you be convinced when you watched how many of their last 10 games?

I'm certainly not MY's biggest fan when he's playing in the field - Beltre's absence is HUGE - but MY made a HELLUVA play at 3rd a few games back on the just completed homestand that I would rank higher in difficulty than last night's whiff.

Shit happens. That's the way baseball go.

If we did an IP trace, how many of these "commenters" do you think would be located in 105.3's office building?

In conclusion, another well written piece by RW.

How's it a risky backhand? Is he supposed to stand there and watch it go by? Did he have time to type up a spreadsheet of fielding options before it got to him? The dude reacted. And missed. Beltre's got a fair number of errors too.

None of us really want to see Young out there at 3rd, but what are the other options until Beltre is healed? I'll wait...

Funniest line that made me spit iced tea all over my desk yesterday?Tardline discussing Holland's ERA (2.1) and Rhyner issuing something like "his ERA is the same as the Fan's ratings"

I didn't see the play, and I'm guessing you didn't either. You admittedly weren't reintroducted to the Rangers until your journey back from San Antonio, so I'm guessing you could really give a shit about them right now.

#bullpenismissingbeltre I don't blame MY, he looked like a dh playing the hot corner..He sucks at 3b, and we should have better options behind Beltre .. But we don't. Get off of Uehara too, he Should've got out of the inning if'n we had an average 3b behind him. The Face plays 3b like a 5 yo girl plays rightfield, Awww look at the butterflys. Also, when not making A Andro uncomfortable on the twitter last night, Thong and Cheese was in the midst of a huge SFBL night..a gain of 5.5 points..WOW. I'm still in 3rd place only 6 points behind both Mert and Merk..and TnC has closed the gap to 15 points from his 5th place perch.

Chris Davis had 3 errors in 8 games playing third base for your Texas Rangers this year.

I'm not gonna bust on Richie for this one.  MY whiffed.  The ball was smoked, but it was playable.  At a minimum, he should have knocked it down and kept it in, or close to, the infield.  I'm glad MY is on the team, but I can't wait for Beltre to get back and nail down third again.

It was a high hop off the seam. Ruled a base hit. RW steals part of his post from Fraley but doesn't mention the high hop that every other sportswriter in this town saw. Says Davis was better when Davis sucked at third. Says backhand stab was wrong when that is the only play on a line drive like that. Trashing a single player for a loss based on this crap is a hack job pure and simple. prediction: You won't see RW anywhere near the Rangers dugout for a long time.

I've presented a similar theory before. If the best The Ticket can get for an intern is someone with the charisma of a toaster in TC, imagine what interns The Fail draws and are recruited into the defense force. It would explain the awful, awful posts.

95% the other 5 would be split between the trailer parks in the DFW metroplex.

I remember going to the ballpark with my dad and sneaking in drinks and snacks because we'll be damned if we're gonna let any of that money go to Michael Young and his team first mentality"My name is Steve and I am the Fail"

Holland fluffed it early on, when he fielded the ball with bases loaded and couldnt get the ball home.  Should have gotten out of that jam with no runs.  Boy that guy really knocked the shit out of that one

Well then, Steve, if you are such a big Rangers fan, you should be a bit put off that Mr. Richie Whitt has said nothing to note Michael Young's 2000th hit.  Or maybe it is not that big of a deal to you?

You are absolutely right.  That play was disgusting.  Nobody is every going to confuse Dutch's fielding with Kenny Rogers', though...

Apparantely Steve fails to realize that Young carried this team on his bat when Hamilton and Cruz were both out of commision earlier in the season. Or he just got reintroduced to them because they are only relevant when RW tells him.

So because i like the Rangers I have to like their "best player".....No.

How can you be a Ranger's fan but couldn't care less if Michael was on the team or not? If it wasn't for him, the Rangers would be battling it out with Seattle and Oakland for being the worst in the division. He leads the team in batting average, on base percentage and rbi. Jackwagon.

It does make sense then.  You are prejudiced.
