Cowboys Preseason 8.17.11: My Top 10 Observer-ations

Categories: Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys - WareStadium.jpg
10. Backup quarterback Jon Kitna didn't practice for a second consecutive day on Tuesday because of a sore back yesterday. Move along, nothing to see here. (Fingers crossed.)

9. Owner Jerry Jones thinks running back Felix Jones is the key to the season: "If he's real good, we'll be real good." He hasn't been real good the last two days, dropping passes in each of the last three sessions at Cowboys Stadium.

8. Told you Igor Olshansky was in trouble. The Wade Phillips holdover has been demoted behind Kenyon Coleman at right defensive end.

7. Defensive end Jason Hatcher apparently was trapped in the team's hotel the other night for 15 minutes. Joked Hatcher, who live Tweeted the event: "I learned a lot about myself in there."

6. Saw where the Texans racked up seven sacks of the Jets in a pre-season game Monday night under a new defensive coordinator named Wade Phillips. Don't even start. Yes, it was his fault here in Dallas.

5. Cowboys signed a partnership yesterday with Reliant Energy. Maybe they heard about the $500,000 monthly A/C bills.

4. Kicker Dan Bailey missed his only field goal on Monday and ended Tuesday's practice by doinking, missing a 54-yarder off the right upright. That's five of his last six no good. David Buehler didn't kick yesterday while nursing a sore hip.

3. Two times in camp the Cowboys have tried a double-reverse with Dez Bryant pitching to Miles Austin, and twice it's resulted in ugly fumbles because Dez doesn't lead Miles. Don't be surprised if that play is scrapped. Dez on an end-around pulling up to throw? Book it.

2. Andre Gurode is back under center, which means Phil Costa is on the move, which means David Arkin is on the move, which means Bill Nagy is on the move. Translation: Gurode starts at center and, for now, Nagy is your starting left guard. Arkin looked good, but the Cowboys wanna see Nagy. Of course, Montrae Holland -- or perhaps a free agent along the lines of Brian Waters -- still lurks as well.

1. I was amazed Monday to look up and see four workers -- tied to safety lines, of course -- walking on the roof of Cowboys Stadium Monday. They were doing the once-a-year cleaning. It'd be a great view and an adrenalin rush, but no thanks. Then I read about this fatality just outside at about the same time. Sad.

The Texans have better odds of making the playoffs than Cowboys. The Cowboys have better odds of making it to Super Bowl than the Texans. I guess this means that folks aren't too keen on the Colts or anyone else in the AFC South. Jerry is going to have something to say to someone if the broadcast/merchandising territorial rival Texans make the post season and the Boys are home watching on the couch.

Kitna - 90 year old back-up QB doesn't practice in training camp.  *yawn*

Monday Night Football - watching the guys who aren't going to make Houston's team sack the guys who aren't going to make the Jet's team is hardly anything to get wood over.

Bailey - Great.  Now the Cowboys have TWO kickers who couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.

Dez throwing - Got any more of the Cowboys trick plays you want to share with the rest of the NFC East?

Yawn? No meh? Clearly you've fallen off of your game, Rooster.

Dan Patrick or Mike 'n Mike or somebody of that ilk said people are going crazy over football because of the lockout, like we missed something that never went away.

"Two times in camp the Cowboys have tried a double-reverse with Dez Bryant pitching to Miles Austin"If a wide receiver takes a hand-off from the quarterback it's an end-around.  If the wide receiver taking the hand-off flips to another wide receiver it's a reverse.  If the wide receiver taking the flip then flips to another player it's a double reverse. The Cowboys are practicing a reverse.Think about it.  Dez comes around and the play flows in one direction.  By Dez flipping the ball to Miles the offensive flow then reverses.

RW must of fell asleep yesterday after his 2nd post..I really missed my daily update of training camp.  Romo's pissing habits and such.  Way to get back on that horse/chicken RW.

Andre Gurode was moved to quarterback? Guess Kitna really is hurt.

I heard they where going to try and split Gurode out wide and see if he can run the deep out route.

What's sad is that I don't think it was a typo.  I honestly don't think RW knows what "under center" means.

Your daily camp posts, are better in Dallas than in San Antonio, so welcome back. My favorite part? Your tag, football.

We look forward to your next two articles, one on Holland almost going all the way on the Angels, and then a comparison of SMU's program to Miami's current situation and whether they deserve the death penalty.

Oh, and nice shout out in wishing Rhynes a happy birthday. As much as he bashes you guys, it's good to see a little humility.

I doubt the NCAA will ever issue another death penalty.  When they gave it to SMU, I don't think they realized it would set a program back 30 years.  Combine that with the fact it's a lot easier to swallow giving a small program the death penalty (not near the effect on the TV money), and it means Miami gets a couple slaps on the wrist.

All I know, is if I'm Ohio State, I'm looking down my nose at the the NCAA, and saying, "You guys fucking crucified us, and these guys make us look like choirboys..."

And no, I have zero affiliation with Ohio State.

I thought he got trapped in the team elevator at the stadium, at least thats what your AM sister station reported.
