2011 Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Day 13: My Top 10 Observer-ations

10.
It wasn't exactly football, but it was close. Sunday's Blue-White scrimmage featured a couple of decent hits and some tackling to the ground. For the most part it was 75-percent speed, a juicy appetizer for Thursday's Cowboys-Broncos pre-season opener

9. By my very unscientific and sorta distracted stat-keeping, Tony Romo was 12 of 17 with touchdown passes to Lonyae Miller, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. He looked sharp, although the first play of the scrimmage was a false start because of a late snap from center Phil Costa.

8. As if he ever had a chance, free-agent punter Chris Jones sealed his training-camp loss to Mat McBriar with punts of 17 and 26 yards.

7. One player not afraid to hit during the scrimmage was rookie cornerback Josh Thomas. Got beat on a couple of passes, but also stuck his head into a couple of physical tackles.

6. Though his defense looked a step slow and out of sorts at times, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan had this post-scrimmage assessment: "We're going to be pretty fucking good."

5. Suddenly Dan Bailey's pushing of kicker David Buehler has slowed. The free agent missed a 38-yard field goal yesterday. Buehler missed from 40, inciting some boos, but ended the scrimmage by nailing a kick from 46.

4. Veteran offensive guard Montrae Holland sat out with a sore back, a week after leaving practice with a tweaked knee. The thing is, Holland is about 20 pounds overweight. He's slow. He's hobbled. I just don't see how the Cowboys consider him the best option at right guard. If so, it's sad.

3. I'll say it again, rookie first-round choice Tyron Smith is the real deal. Linebacker Anthony Spencer was absolutely stoned in three rushes against the Southern Cal stud.

2. In every matchup of first-team offense vs. first-team defense, Jason Garrett has started the skirmish with a screen pass to Felix Jones. Wonder if that will carry over to the preseason, or even regular season?

1. Don't look now, but I think Miller may be this team's second-best running back behind Jones. With a 12-yard scoring catch, a 2-yard touchdown plunge and a nasty juke that left linebacker Orie Lemon grasping at air, the second-year runner is bigger and better than Tashard Choice. Until we see DeMarco Murray, Miller is the short-yardage back.

Cowboys football is meh until the regular season starts. I don't care if Romo took a shit, I don't care if Dez pissed on the toilet seat, I don't care if Miles blew a load in his girlfriend's eye...actually I might be interested in watching that when it comes out on DVD.

Give us some Rangers stories. Fuck, we'll take MMA stories or some more of your ghost stories. Anything but Cowboys Training Camp Day XX Observations.

Rangers 9, Mariners 2: Observations

10.  The Texas Rangers released Arthur Rhodes on Monday.  One of the OBLs (“oldblack lefties”, not “Osama bin Ladens”), the end is probably near for Rhodes’s career. He’ll be a 41-year-old free agent on Wednesday.

9.  A 9-2 score is just what is expected when a first place team at home plays a last place team on the road.  If the Rangers really want to put away the Los Angeles Angels and be serious contenders against the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees then they need to get in the habit of doing the expected more often. 8.  Mitch Moreland committed an error fielding a ground ball during the game.  These mistakes don’t cost you against the Mariners.  They do cost you against playoff teams.  The Rangers’ big win streak this year was fueled in part by virtually error-free defense.

7.  The commentators jinxed Matt Harrison.  After mentioning that he had a low pitch count going into the third inning, he lost control and gave up two runs.  He settled down after that and picked up the win, striking out six and walking none.

6.  Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz were both thrown out in the fourth inning making attempts to stretch singles into doubles.  Does that lack of discipline fall on the players or the management?

5.  Watching a ground ball get by Michael Young at third base can be agonizing sometimes.  His first step is so slow, almost like his legs are stuck in cement.  Then he dives to his right with his glove too low to snag the ball.  Those are tough plays to be sure, but turning doubles down the third base line into outs at first base would have helped theRangers tremendously in the playoffs last year.

4.  Seeing Moreland and Young float opposite field pop flies to the warning track makes me long for the good ol’ days when only the truly powerful clean up batters had oppositefield homerun power.

3.  Now watching Ichiro Suzuki run the bases and play defense, that reminds me of the way baseball used to be played.

2.  We had a Darren O’Day sighting in the ninth. Three outs, one hit, no runs.  I can live with that.

1.  Alexi Ogando is scheduled to return to the mound Tuesday night. Cue Richie Whitt’s righteous indignation.

Everyone should take notes on the following three things: Go to ITunes right now and download "That's the way baseball goes." by the great Merle Haggard. When RW is called out fervently enough, somebody hears it.Minus Mayor and Sloppy equals Rob_em writing a decent (for RW) blog post..hmmm, What the what? Red river flamingo fadeaway from just above your outreached arms, Mr. Shitt. POW!

You would think by now The Observer would have realized that not having a real Sports Blogger puts them at a competitive disadvantage.

Ok, I don't usually participate in the nut-kicking, but I am getting pretty damn tired of these throwaway top ten lists. I don't come here for box scores or a rundown of the last series, but dammit there are sporty sports happening out there and all I get from this blog is another rendering of Cowboys BS. Guess what, I am inundated with Cowboys talk. Little red shoed Rangers deserve at least a mention. Not only did Face get to 2k, but Neffy is seriously concerning me. I don't know what is up with that kid. Is it is head? He better figure out how to get guys out or he is gonna be looking at coming in from the pen in the 7th maybe. How about some college ball?Maybe D. Stern and THAT situation?Or even a half-assed second tier sport with good good gossipy back-biting? No? Not even a mention? All Cowboys all the time! Laters. I got other websites to click on too.

Just one person's rambling observations of this blog and its commenters....

I think what some of the problem is here is that many more readers come here now because the DMN paywall prevents many from getting their local sports coverage elsewhere, and this is one of the alternatives.

This should be viewed as an opportunity for the Dallas Observer to gain many online readers, but unfortunately, Mr. Whitt is failing to meet the daily demand for quality local sports coverage.

I do note that many of the regular Whitt nut kickers on this blog rarely, if ever, comment on (or read?) his feature pieces that are also published in the print edition. Perhaps a blog post linking to those articles is in order. Mr. Whitt often does quality work in those feature pieces and I would classify most of those as recommended reading.

Perhaps, as others have suggested, the readers of this blog would be better served by multiple writers. Mr. Whitt could still make occasional, more worthwhile, posts as well. Seems like that would be a win-win for all involved.

P.S. all that rational reasoning from someone with an alias such as mine...LOL

Since you guys are wanting more reading, here you go.

Rangers vs. Mariners

The Texas Rangers begin a three game series at home against the Seattle Mariners tonight at approximately 7:05 PM.  Texas has won its last five games against Seattle. The Rangers need to continue their domination of the last place Mariners as Texas currently holds only a one-half game lead over the Los Angeles Angels.

Congratulations have been in order for Michael Young.  Last night Young, a career Ranger, got his 2,000th career hit.  Widely believed to be on his way out of town during the offseason, Young has been one of the most consistent players on the team this year.  He’s batting over .330 and playing a wide array of defensive positions.   Despite being in first place, the good news for the Rangers seems to end with Young’s achievement. Acquiring relievers Koji Uehara and Mike Adams near the trade deadline hasn’t prevented the Rangers’ bullpen from struggling.  Adams, who had a 1.13 ERA in the National League, promptly joined the Rangers and gave up a homerun, his performancelargely costing them the game.  Meanwhile closer Neftali Feliz has blown six saves, doubling his number of unfortunate performances from last year.

So my question is this: what has gone wrong with Neftali?  Maybe it was his poor performance in the playoffs last year, notwithstanding his legendary strikeout of Alex Rodriguez to put away the New York Yankees and put the Rangers in the World Series for the first time ever.

Maybe it was management’s decision to let Feliz start spring training games, or maybe teams simply have enough tape on Feliz that they have been able to scout him better than last year.

Along the same lines, if Feliz’s performance has stagnated, should the Rangers consider using one of their newly acquired arms in the closer role?

This is so fucking weak Midget. How in the hell are you still employed by the Observer?

Mr. Wilonsky,

Please, please, please rid us of this garbage. We are loyal readers and deserve better than this. The Observer deserves better than this. What do we need to do to get someone who cares to start writing in this blog?

Slow night in MLB overall tonight. Tomorrow night we get some better action with some first and second place teams squaring off: Angels - Yankees, Brewers - Cardinals, Tigers - Indians. The Mariners are in town tonight against the Rangers starting lefty Furbush (I've been to that website). The rookie movement is underway in Seattle. While the Mariners do not have a Mike Trout equivalent they do have the lesser grade Mike Carp. Carp has been hardly chum (urggh), hitting .311 with 15 rbi in 32 games. He usually plays left field or DH but has been playing first base with Smoak out. Smoak, who is day to day with a bruised thumb injured last Tuesday, hit only .141 in July. Rookies Trayvon Robinson and Dustin Ackley are good goods. Seattle is 6-4 since ending their 17 game losing streak.

Cowboys were again the least impressive of the Texas teams, no excitement, no flare, no fire, just plain effort. Prediction 5-11.....McGee era begins.....

Possible topics from this weekend:--Hall of Fame talk--Rangers talk--Economy dropping and who was to blame (we know 0 blame would be on the Dems)--End of the world talk and how there is no God (poke the readers again)

I guess you're trying to drive us from the blog and onto your radio show. Bad move. I was hoping we'd at least get an update on how things are at Baby Doll's and how many guys you saw getting Beeej's in the VIP. As much as you don't like us, we read your blog. We also comment on your blog and your blogs get more comments than your articles in the Observer. Maybe that's what you want? I guess it's just a case of the Mondays.

So we had a whole weekend of sports and we get 1 fucking post and it 12:30. I'm writing the publisher to complain, this place is a pathetic image of is former self. D.O. would do best by bring in a real sports writer. Someone who doest hold grudges against local teams for pissing on his station, and also will engage his readers, as used to be done here.

Error's have been absurdly high this year.  Mr. Richie Whitt probably is OK with Ogando's leave because he didn't miss a start like Colby Lewis did.  If fact, I have heard a rumor that Mr. Richie Whitt wants to put some guacamole on that lump Ogando has on his face and take a nibble or two.

As a nut kicker, I actually read his features.  Yes, his features are generally good, as I have stated here before.  This post today?  Pure rubbish.  Highlights of practice would not be so bad if the news was not already a day old..and every single day.  As of late, when Wilonsky has posted something sporty, it blows away anything in the Sports blog.

I didn't go to the DMN very often any more. I seem to range much farther afield now if I want to track a story. Click, I am on the LA Times. Click, I am in Minn. Gosselin was bout the only reason I read them. I can hear him on Norm. Or is it the Musers? The DMN stopped being relevant to me about ten years ago.

Lots of sports and other items to blog on, and we get an update from the weekend at practice. Pretty much a rehash of what I read in the paper (yes, I am one of the fools who still reads a paper).

Given the local radio ratings for sports talk, there are probably more people on here commenting about the content (and severe lack thereof) than listening to you over the air.

Maybe the writer of this blog (using the term "writer" loosely) should concentrate on one or the other and quit one of his gigs.

You could have added Mike Adams possibly taking the closer role away from Neffy. Wait, he wouldn't bash Adams one day and then applaud him the next, would he?  I guess he would, seems to do that with Dez regularly now. I will only put creed into RW commenting anything positive on Mike Adams if he hyperlinks every article about how bad he was in his first game.

You know what's really sad?? He didn't even acknowledge Young's 2,000th hit yet he posted an entire paragraph on Romo's bowel movement. How fucked up is that?

we could have 3 good blogs from your list and Richie could have written then all in his own little way.  In fact, 2.5 years ago this is how his blog day would have went.,  We could have serious Richie, writing about the best rangers hitter ever gettting 2000 hits, then could have followed that with the cowboys update, then he could have written an inflammatory blog about Kenny Rogers, he could take either side of the argument and just flame, but nope, we wont get it

A couple things JSIB, do they pay attention to formal emailed complaints only.  Because if they pay attention to complaining here, ya'll would have done had him fired.  I really dont want to see anyone fired, but it seems to  me, maybe they could get a less biased (perhaps the Jones' have forced his hand) writer.  They have got more than 1 writer contributing to Unfair Park, cant we get more than one writer here?
