Whitt's End - reaper.jpg
Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*I know one practice doesn't make a career and, as Bill Parcells says, let's hold off on shipping that bust to Canton, but Cowboys' first-round draft pick Tyron Smith looks like a beast. Athletic. Strong. Long arms. Quick feet. The entire package. Brad Sham comparing him to Larry Allen. Yes, already.

*With the trade deadline looming Sunday and with manager Ron Washington begging for reinforcements, the Rangers have to do something. Right? Padres' pitcher Heath Bell would give Texas an 8th-inning setup guy, but he might also be a psychological burden to suddenly iffy closer Neftali Feliz.

*Cowboys are desperate for help at safety. We know this. Painful to watch as players like Dawan Landry, Danieal Manning and Eric Weddle sign with other teams. Heard from another Cowboys' source this morning, however, that they are "lurking" in the cornerback Nnamdi Asomughu sweepstakes. If not him, then who? As of right now they are starting at safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah and Barry Church.

*So now former U.S. President George W. Bush says his apparent lack of reaction to the first news of the Sept. 11 2001 attacks was a conscious decision to project an aura of calm in a crisis. So next time you get a call that your house is on fire, just sit there. Motionless. Dumbfounded. It'll project calm. Yeah, right. Laughing. My. Ass. Off.

*In case you ever forget the name of your favorite sport, head coach Jason Garrett is there with relentless reminders. I'll set the number of times he says "football" in a given press conference at 20. Take the over and by the end of the season you'll be a rich man.

*Remember that one time when a bunch of biased commenters accused Radio Station A of stealing every idea from Radio Station B, then B turned around and played softball a week after A? That was cool. And then remember that other time when Station B gloated about covering Cowboys' Training Camp -- starting Aug. 1! -- after A had already been doing it for five days? That was even cooler.

*Hot.

*Not.

*Former Cowboys' receiver Roy Williams hooking on with former offensive coordinator Mike Martz in Chicago. Don't care where he goes, just glad his untimely drops and awkward quotes won't be dragging Dallas down anymore. In 40 games with the Cowboys, Williams managed 94 catches for 1,324 yards and 13 touchdowns. In other words, in 2 1/2 years in Dallas Williams put together, combined, one good year.

*You can say it stinks and is overrun with tourists, and you'd be right. Still, wish Dallas had something half as magnetic as San Antonio's Riverwalk.

*Went to a Dallas Vigilantes game last week. Not bad. Not football. But not bad.

*If you're into haunted houses, stay at Menger Hotel. Seriously, the bar just has a creepy vibe.

*I initially thought safety AOA suffered a major knee injury in Thursday afternoon's practice. He hobbled off, putting no weight on his left leg. Post-practice diagnois? A cramp. Whew.

One hundred twenty-three. Not too damn shabby for a spare to fair Friday post. RW don't be chucking stones in your glass house concerning ball games/promo/obligatoryshitwegottado comparing one station to another. Really, it seems rather trite and self-conscious. Good luck in the ratings. Mornings still suck, Two Live Hebrews is pretty good and you and the oft missing Greggo are pretty ok fine too. Keep working and you can stay ahead of Grandpa. I like the Ranger trades so far. Can Neftali's ego take this influx of others? Is this some sign to him that he is no longer the only option? I think it should be. Fish or cut bait son. Get with it and pitch or get the hell off the mound. Is CJ gone? off to the climes of his the West Coast? merely speculating. Can we or will we and most importantly should we keep him? Trying really hard to give a shit about the Cowboys. Barely. Kinda sorta glad about Doug F. Seems like a pretty good deal. Best news last week was seeing the cuts. I think red-headed Jesus might have some pull around the Valley. Good sign. I like Ryan's hair, non-traditional coordinator. Yep, needed iconoclasm around the place. If somebody does the ole' coverage on the sidelines I hope he tears them a new one this year. I gotta feeling he is gonna demand finishing hits. I sure hope so. the quality of a parking space in the summer is directly proportional to its amount of shade and not its distance from the doorI think GWB was stunned like somebody slammed his head to the floor. He can spin it however he wants. That was a man in shock as he had that book about a goat in his hand and all those young faces before him. I figured he got himself together about as well as could be expected. I would have rather he had told the kids something had come up and he had to go be Prez in a few seconds instead of 7 min. but them's the breaks. The shrub is still good for a few comments. Not like it used to be. Law of diminishing returns. I really don't give a shit about who has what moniker on here. Not my problem. I kick RW when I have a mind to, sometimes I think he does a pretty good job. I still keep turning up here. shrug.

The Broken End:Let's all give a hand to BigGame Hunter and Chris Davis, and a big Hell Yeah to JD for once again turning chicken shit (SJ and Mayor) into Chickensalad. The Dutchoven has as many shutouts this year as the great Clee, and also has A's many this year as the great Andy Pettite during his probable HOF career.Bell is still in play here folks, but not for Weiland and Erlin.Sooo, the Cowboys resigned Spears, and haven't signed a 3rd receiver, o-lineman or a safety of any sort..not very encouraging.Heard Greggo called in screwed up, no news there.SFBL update: Mert and Merk are in a heated battle for the lead, I managed to tie for 3rd w Hendricks twice this week..but with Beltre and Boomstick down with hammy issues I'm slipping. The race for 5th is tightening up, everyone down there is within 10 points of each other..way to fight the tough fight boys.Real Kergo, I love that y'all traded for the club douche..hope that..er..works out for ya.Last time I'll speak of the unwashed and unregistered: SJ and M.o.M. , we can do what y'all do (without cursing, ya douchebags) but Yall's next sporty point will be your first. Ranger's are still in the lead, Angels aren't throwing in the towel though. I think that the little Redshoes have atleast one more move in em before tomorrow night. Wouldn't hurt to add a rh batsman...and another reliever.Woulda loved to be in on Ubaldo or Danks (not like RW woulda) but I also like to hold onto Perez and Weiland. Look out for Mr. Weiland, he's this years Dutchoven. Flying through the system, like a meteorite circling SJ's Uranus. In closing let me say, POW! (More Kergs spaceship, and less fake superdouche RW accounts.)

LOL!! Most people who read this blog do NOT listen to that shit hole of a station. By the way, I use the name Sloppy Joe, because after Richie, Greggo and Armen get done with my ass, my asshole looks like sloppy joe meat.

ThaBrad
ThaBrad

I guess I don't get it. Most people post on here to kick Richie in the nuts. Most times he deserves it, sometimes he doesn't. Thing is, it's natural to fuck with someone else. I think as human males we challenge those who we deem as weak, those who we see as threats, or those (Richie) who have absolutely no grasp on the way everyone else perceives them. Screwing with Richie is fun, and hopefully one day he will actually learn to take stuff on stride (Probably not. Everyone else will likely continue to be the problem, not him.)

Here's what weird. I see people defend Richie by saying that he screwed someone's wife/mother/etc.... They place Richie above themselves and portray him as some demigod who is way more bad ass than everyone else, including themselves. That shit is crazy. It's like offering your wife up to a movie star, thereby admitting that you're less of a man than them. It's pathetic.

Defend Richie when he deserves it, but for fuck's sake don't do so at the cost of your dignity. It's fucking Richie. Most of the people here are smarter, stronger, and definitely more self aware than the guy, but he is an okay writer, and the Fan isn't the complete failure we all thought it would be. Give him his due, but if you are one of the weirdasses who worships the guy... he'll I don't know what to tell you.

Sloppy Joe
Sloppy Joe

You've got it backwards. No one worships him. He didn't sleep with my wife.

But I figure if people get this pissed off about everything he does, he must have boned their wives or something.

Right on cue one of the biggest fucking wastes of space shows up. Josh's Shoulder is about as dumb as it fucking gets. He admitted earlier that he shows up to the blog for the fellowship and to insult Richie.

That asshole has no friends in the real world, so he shows up here under a fake name with people he has never met, and that is his fellowship. What a fucking pathetic loser. And he comes here to insult Richie. Some people work out, play video games, go on dates, etc., but this sorry bitch has nothing better to do than insult someone he has never met.

So sad. The moment Josh's Shoulder realizes what a piece of shit he is, he'll hang himself, and the world will be a better place.

And his woman can stop sneaking out to get plowed by Richie.

The  GWB interview is airing on Aug 28th on the National Geographic Channel. Here's the gist:

The interview was recorded over two days in May, without any questions being submitted in advance, the channel said. National Geographic said Bush gives "intimate details'' of his thoughts and feelings in a way never seen before. Most of the interview is about the first minutes and hours of the day that Islamic militants hijacked four planes and crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Executive producer and director Peter Schnall said Bush, who has adopted a low public profile since leaving office in January 2009, brought no notes to the interview.

So the real story is that these guys got some first time inside responses from a former president that viewers will be able to form their own opinions from.

I used to read this blog regularly. It started to slip, so I stopped. I've read the past few days worth of posts and can see that it's only gotten worse. A lot of the regular folks who post comments, that I remember anyway, have every right to piss and moan about this blog. Richie used to be a good writer. Now he's not. How he's keeping his job here is beyond me.

Quit worrying about The Ticket.  Either be the better station, and let the ratings do the talking, or just forget about it.  The Fan has come a long way...but still a very long way behind 1310.

Truth Serum

FYI -  ALL sportsradio stations are going to cover the cowboys, dummie.

i must admit the ticket playing a softball game the very next week was a bit copycat'ish.but then again only the 17 listeners of 105.3 the Fail knew about so does it even count?if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it....

with all due respect, the ONLY ppl who went to watch y'all game was family members of the spare hosts.remember 100k watts only generated $6k.

First of all I come in peace. Just moved here from Houston (poor Astros I know). I grew up in east Texas as a big Ranger fan. My dad would take me to games out at the old ballpark. Anyway I became a Astros fan but always kept up with the Rangers.

I am not a big football fan but I do understand that this is a big football area. But.............the Rangers are playing real games right now and the trade deadline is fast upon us. Is there just one person who blogs here? If so is there any blog I can go for Ranger news other than Newburg which is great? The coments are pretty heated here.

Also looking for suggestions on a good sports talk station. If possible I would like to hear from both sides of this blog.

Again I come in peace and just looking for good stuff to listen to and read. Thanks for the help.

These are just my opinions:

For quality Rangers' blogging, visit:

http://www.bbtia.com/http://www.lonestarball.com/

These are both excellent and entertaining online destinations for Rangers' fanatics.

As far as sports talk radio goes (also strictly MY opinion - I've been listening to local sports talk on the radio since the late 80's):

- Most entertaining show (and its not even close) - Dunham & Miller 530a - 10a on 1310 The Ticket

- Most knowledgeable host, but best served in smaller doses - Norm Hitzges - 10a - 12p on 1310 The Ticket

- Personal favorite of mine (even though he's on vacation for a month it seems every July) just because I've been listening to him forever - Randy Galloway - 3p - 6p - 103.3 ESPN Radio

There used to be a kick ass afternoon show on The Ticket. It still goes by the same name - the Hardline - but it lost it's edge when Greg "the Hammer" Williams was fired a few years back. He now is a co-host in the afternoons on 105.3 The Fan. IMO, both of these afternoon shows - Ticket & Fan - are subpar compared to Galloway when he's on air. The Hardline is still #1 in the ratings by a mile, but it pales in comparison to the ORIGINAL Hardline for sports/entertainment value. End of History lesson.

I'm sure others will have their own take on what's what. Fact is - this market is spoiled with the abundance of choices offered.

There used to be Rangers stories here until Richie got butthurt about them leaving his station(The Fail) for less money. The only show on the Fail that even bothers with Rangers talk is Josh and Elf(I suggest giving them try) Any stories you get about the Rangers here are generally negative and totally out of context from what went on in the game because Richie can't be bothered to watch or listen or even read the sports page.

Here's my opinion on the sports talk in the area.

1310 AM (104.1 FM) -- Don't be fooled by its weak signal.  It's the highest rated sports talk in the area, and most people will tell you the Ticket is the oldest and the best in the area.  However, the downside is that they have a lot of inside jokes and gimmicks that aren't quite as funny as its diehard listeners think.

103.3 FM -- ESPN.  Decent radio in the morning (Mike & Mike) and afternoon (Galloway).  The drawback is that a large chunk of their programming beats you over the head with east coast (New York/Boston) stories and low-hanging NFL, college football, and MLB stories.

105.3 FM -- CBS Radio.  The programming has steadily improved over the past few months, notwithstanding the exit of the superb Newy Scruggs.  If you need something to listen to at lunch, there is simply no one that knows his stuff as well as Josh Lewin.

Bottom line, Dallas is lucky.  Most cities have terrible sports talk.  Here, you've got three decent choices.  You'll have to decide what fits you the most.

If you want some Texas Rangers blogging, check out Jamey Newberg or Evan Grant.  There are others out there, too, but I just throw those out there to get you started.

Remember when Station A lapped Station B's ratings even thought it started covering Cowboys almost a week later than Station B?

Remember when Station B started running "coincidence, we think not" promos after Station A had been doing it for a decade?

Remember when Station B decided to play at game at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco after Station A had been doing it for years?

Remember when Station B's hosts and management swore that replacing George Dunham as Cowboys PA was NOT because Station B was desperate to have SOME control over Station A?

(Honestly, Richie you walk right into these...but you know that don't you.)

My only hope is that Station A will thumb its nose at Station B and Station ESPN and NOT cover daily Cowboys press conferences...they eat into my WTDS time.

Steves
Steves

How sad. So if I follow this correctly, Richie thinks that after 2 years of the Ticket playing with themselves (wait, that didn't come out right) of the Ticket playing themselves in baseball, that the Fan had an original idea by having the Fan hosts play each other in softball.  And the Ticket stole that idea?

What would be really interesting would be to find out when these events were actually planned.  My guess is that it's a lot harder to schedule Airhog stadium than Field of Dreams.  The difference between actually dealing with a semi-pro stadium versus a multi field softball complex.  Would anybody be suprised to find out that the Ticket event was actually scheduled first, and the Fan stole THEIR idea?  Wouldn't really suprise me.

But I think the field difference shows the difference in the 2 stations.  One is radio pros, one is basically a rec-league team of spare radio hosts...

TheRealDirtyP1

Good point Steves. I'm pretty sure if you wanted to set up a softball tourney at Field of Dreams you could do that with a couple weeks notice. We need a deep throat informant, voice change and all.

I changed the station everytime I heard The Fan talking about their softball game and I changed the station everytime I heard The Ticket talking about their softball game. Having a station event is fine, but I hate having to listen to it. I was changing stations a lot as you can imagine, b/c both were shoving it down our throats.

The back and forth immature bashing in the comments is getting old and none of it is funny. Let's get back to bashing RW, that's a whole lot more fun to read.

Hey Sporties,*Tyron Choice is the real deal. He's big, black, young, and can block. <snicker>

*The Rangers are in trouble when their starters take a seat. No lead is safe anymore. Have anything else besides the obvious here? I mean, since they have a schizophrenic offense, I think is the way you put it.

*It's amazing how Jerra went from having one of the highest paid defensive players in the game(Roy Williams #2), to guys that probably couldn't start for any other winning team in the NFL. Until the defense is made priority, this thing isn't going anywhere. Good luck Rob Ryan.

*I voted for Bush the first time, 2nd time didn't vote. So what does this have to do w/sports? I don't really know the correct response to this, it was definitely an easy missive for you to draw the Repubs offsides, but in this forum? This is more Wilonsky or Schutze's realm. That being said, if you want to lay blame about 9/11, there's plenty to go around. For good reading, Shadow Wars by Steve Coll is probably the best reference out there.

*I'll take on any give day of RAGE where Greggo is there with you, the over/under is you'll say his name 100 times. When he's out "sick", the over/under is 50.

*Nice try to infer that the Fan is ahead of the curve against the Ticket. But do you really believe what you're saying? And do you think they copied you? Let's see, they've played real baseball, softball, and played against a girl softball team(great bit). Not to mention flag football games with Staubach, Aikman, White, Dorsett, etc., hockey games, a basketball game, and other great events. You might try to do what they do, but you can't do it the way they do. This comment would sound better if you were saying it 5 years from now and your ratings were better, just a suggestion.

*Stayed at the Menger last summer, watched outside my window as the mexicans marched down the street to attack( I believe they do that every 2 hours). Pretty cool hotel and you can walk everywhere. I'm from San Antonio, if you're a foodie, there aren't many good places to eat on the riverwalk.

*Gagree on 130. You're definitely going out of your way but at least you're moving. Still bummed that we haven't had a top 10 rundown on best/worst parts of I-35.</snicker>

Richie you've done a good job on the radio. I'm proud of you. In the next few months your show might be the definitive number two, overtaking ESPN. You've really brought 105.3 the Fan a long way.
