Whitt's End: 7.1.11

Categories: Whitt's End

Whitt's End - reaper.jpg
Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Rangers return from Houston today to start a series in Arlington against the lowly Florida Marlins. Did anyone go to the airport to see the Silver Boot as Nolan Ryan triumphantly raised it? And how long until we get a Twitpic of Ryan and the boot together in the urinal? Thursday night's 7-0 loss to the Astros was totally expected in the wake of drinking Champagne from the boot.

*Again I ask you, why is Josh Hamilton diving for balls in the outfield in the 7th inning of a June game in which his team trails 7-0? Great catch. Grotesque decision.

*Can't decide if this is one of the best or worst times ever to be a metroplex sports fan. Is it A.) The best because we're still basking in the glow of the Mavs' first title? or B.) The worst because the Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl in 15 years, the Stars are a total mess and now two of the four major sports are stagnated in lockouts? I'm going with A. For now.

*Speaking of the Mavs, they can't let Tyson Chandler walk in free agency. Without him, Dallas' wait for an NBA title would be 32 years and counting.

*When and if the NBA 2011-12 season commences, don't be surprised if Bob Ortegel is back on Mavs TV broadcasts. In what capacity I'm not sure, but I know the Mavs sorely missed his presence and expertise last season and there is a strong push inside the organization to return him behind the microphone.

*For those of you who keep stubbornly predicting KRLD-FM 105.3 The Fan will flip formats by sundown, a certain afternoon drive show recently surpassed 5.0 in the Men 25-54 ratings and beat KESN-FM 103.3 ESPN's Galloway and Co. the first two weeks in June. Not pounding my chest. Not saying I'm any good. Not saying KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket's Hardline dynasty is in any way, shape or form the least bit threatened. Merely promising that when I get back from vacation on July 11 I'll still have a job.

*Hot.

*Not.

*Seemed like just yesterday Tiger Woods and Roger Federer were unbeatable in their respective sports, texting and challenging each other to be the first to 20 majors. Now? Wondering if either will ever win another. And Tim Duncan. Done as well.

*Coulda swore I saw the Mets' Jose Reyes triple against the Tigers this week and give "The Claw" toward New York's dugout. Anyone else see it? Texas shoulda trademarked it.

*Just for fun, my Top 5 favorite athletes of all-time: 5. Julius Erving; 4. Evel Knievel; 3. Dirk Nowitzki; 2. Roberto Clemente; 1. Bjorn Borg.

*Funny line from Conan O'Brien in the wake of Chris Hansen's videotaped dalliance with a girlfriend 20 years his junior: "Hanson knew he was in trouble when he walked into his kitchen and he was already there waiting to ambush himself." Bravo.

*Shocking sight at Wimbledon this week. In Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's box during his epic upset of Federer was his brother, Enzo. Wearing -- I shit you not -- a blue Rangers cap.

*Last week I wondered what happened to Charlie Sheen. This week he answers: Says steroids helped him click his fastball from 79 to 85 mph. I totally believe that. No really, I do.

Remember when we used to wonder who'd be the token Ranger going to the All-Star Game?  Well, now we have FIVE (5) going!  Pow! Pow!

SBFL Breaking News Sounder:Merten has moved into a tie for 1st with Merkin. Big week for Mr. Merten, congrats on a strong close of the first half. (I'm still gonna get ya, but somebody need to catch Merk)

*Norm filling in: meh. *Richie's Vegas vacation stories: over eating, losing "big" at the blackjack table...blah blah blah. *Rangers fan death: talk about bad luck. Seems Josh almost knocked off two fans in two nights (tonight was a foul ball off a fans head)*That's it for now, more could come after I take my Ambien

Better late than never. Here's Crockett's End:

- Truly sad last night at the Ballpark.

- Just two days left until RW is back, which means two days until the NFL lockout is over according to his claim.

- With regard to the hot/cold debate: Give me cold. I spent about 3 years in Chicago and absolutely loved the winters, though one morning it was -18 and that's no fun. Perfection for me is sunny and about 45 degrees.

- Hot: Most women on channel 5 news team.

- Not: Anything that RW pulls out of a bar, probably.

- Finally gave that morning show on the Fan a listen. No good. No good at all. Luckily I dropped some dough on used cd's at Good Records last weekend. I like Norm but only in small, brief spurts.

- Is it written in the rule book that a runner on base has to tag up in between pitches if the ball wasn't put in play? You always see them do it.

I wish I was in Las Vegas with Richie. I love the male prostitues in Vegas. They clean my colon every time I visit. Wowee!

Been so nice not having your smartass self on the radio this, think you could make it permanent?

Scruffyshooting wondering whatever happened to Ramon Nivar.

--Ballpark events last night=tragic. Also avoidable, which makes it more tragic. Ballpark railings do seem low, but also meet code. Raising them could ruin sight lines, costs lots of moolah. And, not to take away anything from this, but the accidents to attendance ratio is still ridiculously low. 3 in 17, 18 years? Tap the brakes on the retrofits, people. You're talking about better odds of winning the lottery. Use your noggin if you're at the railing. Honestly, I expect a firefighter to know better. I feel for his family and indeed it was awful.

EDIT: I just saw the video, and it's sad it happened because it was indeed entirely avoidable--he reached out and over for a ball going straight to the guy next to him.

--Disappointed that this place got less love this week than JWP gave the inland port. Richie Whitt being the only one to give us any content is like E! being the only channel that comes through on your cable. Occasionally something decent, but for the most part very meh and people may choose the nothing at all option.

--If you agree with my opinion that there is no reason to yet care about the Cowboys, talk about the Cowboys, or read about the Cowboys before the lockout is settled, please post it. It will probably do no good, but I still feel like any media that goes to that well isn't trying very hard.

--Rick Perry seems to think Bible-thumpers can get him elected to national office. I laugh at that.

--Cold beats heat. Much easier to warm up than cool down. My seat heater kicks in before the AC cools things down, and I don't like my fingertips melting to the wheel.

--Hot does not equal that acquitted Casey chick. She's dumb, gross, and did bad things, conviction or not.

--Norm, have a nice trip. Thanks for your efforts this week, but I'm thankful there's no more Nose in the News and hearing him say "lads" and his giggle laugh. Miss you, Gordo. Hugsies. Mike and Mike went back to Option #2, that's how craptacular New School is.

--Contemplating going dark on Monday. Don't want a certain person thinking I'm stalking him.

The Broken End-7/8/11

Sad stuff at the ballpark last night, there's a 3 1/2 foot gap between the wall and seats..they need to put some chain link up. Theoldgraywolf just tweeted the link from the accident last night..that gap is extremely dangerous..can't believe Rangers haven't done anything about it before now.Redshoes are as hot as the weather, with no signs of either relenting in the near future.CJ, Colbyashi, Harrison, Ogando and every other start by Dutchoven..with Feldman and BigGame in the wings..WOW, is all I can say.Warsh leads an ever-growing Redshoe contingent to the ASG next week, but I've heard from a pretty shitty source that the PA guy will probably fire up "Cocaine" when Warsh comes out to change pitchers. When did Norm come up with "Hold on man.", it's almost as big a beating as RW's constant Greggo-ing.Soul Patch>all shows on the Fail other than Two Jews one Jar.GrizzyMan=greatnessTim Treadwell=dumbassHot>Cold (tWas 118 in Phoenix earlier this week, think about that when you're mowing this weekend and cussing about The Greatest of States)Really missed RW's consistently mailing in stuff this week, don't know where to go for Cowboy's announcer scuttlebutt.Scruff, Storm, Davy, RW's douchiness and Dollardog did good work this week, wouldve liked to see Mert contribute but alas he was busy gelling his hair.SFBL is getting pretty good toward the top, and it's a war from 5-10. J's bs has acquired King Felix and the clubhouse cancer known as Tex for a Prince. My prayers go out to the family of the Brownwood fireman, Jham and everyone that was in or near that seating area last night.

McDoom
McDoom

Thank goodness the McKinney douche is on vacation so we don't have to have him question religion and the sobriety of Mr. Stone in his scattershooting today. And now he has a new bit to hammer the Rangers over: fan safety. Next Monday is gonna suck.

Count me in as also looking forward to Scruff/Broken/DC's end. Strong, hand crafted commenting this week guys.

Give me the heat, a few cold ass beeras (not bear-as) and some skimpy clothing on the gals..I can deal with a little warmth all year if'n I don't have to fight through the womenfolk wearing sweaters or somesuch. Remember compadres, Texas is about the heat sure, but them mild winters ain't too bad neither.

Dollar Dog

In baseball news:

Rangers sign 16 year old Nomar Mazara to a reported 5 million dollar bonus. This along with the 15.5m Leonys Martin deal indicate that the Rangers are willing to gamble big on these kids hitting near their upside potential. Chris Davis has 3 outfield errors in 26 chances at Round Rock so far. It remains to be seen if he will be on display in Arlington again prior to the July 31 trade deadline.

AL West action firing up tonight with OAK vs TEX and then SEA vs LAA as the late free game on MLB.TV.

Speaking of the Angels, here is a useless baseball fact - 5 of the 8 inductees in the Angel's Hall of Fame spent time with an Arlington Tx team:

Texas Rangers - Jim Fregosi, Nolan Ryan, Brain Downing

Dallas Fort Worth Spurs - Don Baylor, Bobby Grich

Don’t know if anyone saw or read the news about the bear attack in Yellowstone yesterday. I consider myself to be somewhat of a camper, not in this hot ass shit we got going now but you know what I mean. Anyway I take the boy out we hike in a couple of miles and set up shop for a day or so. I gotta tell ya this bear attack shit scares the piss out of me. I can deal with the occasional snake, raccoon, feral hog. Hell even a bobcat here and there. I try and teach my son to respect the outdoors and respect animals and the like. But fellas I can honestly say I can think of no worse way to go out than being mauled/eaten by a bear. It’s the main reason as silly as it sounds that I don’t camp where bears are. That dip shit Tim Treadway that lived with’em, I heard the audio of his attack……… not for me.  I vote for the cold.

Remember when we wouldn't be wondering when the next post was coming after ten days without a new entry? It's not like nothing has happened at the ballpark or in the world of sports in the last ten days. (Is Richie in rehab? Prison? WitSec?)

Scruffygeist

Don't look now, but my scrappy little squad has climbed to "kinda-sorta low-end of mediocre" from "god-awful." I now fully expect to have jinxed my team into a freefall back to the bottom of the heap.

Ramon Nivar - last I heard, he played winter ball for Toros Del Este of the Dominican League and is now a free agent.  Since he's now in his early 30's and has been out of the bigs for 6 years, I would imagine we've seen the last of him unless he drops by to play for the Airhogs.

Cowboys - meh.  Somebody wake me when the millionaires and billionaires stop squabbling. (Weak of mind drawn offsides in 5..4.3..2...)

Rick Perry - Governor Goodhair doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell on the national stage.

Casey chick - she did bad things, but I still wouldn't look away if someone showed me her cans.

Norm - looking forward to the return of the Courage Boys.

Warsh/Cocaine schtick  - is so yesterday.  If its true, I can't believe ballparks would still do that, especially at the ASG.

Soul Patch = greatness.  2 Live Jews - diggin it.  RAGE - as unpopular as it is to say here, I dig me some RAGE.

Cowboys announcer - bring back Grand Dragon Georgio.

Merten - was looking forward to seeing his fine work this week.  Was disappointed to learn he left the Observer.

You fail to see the appeal of a well-fitted sweater and stretchpants on women that don't eat their way to their own insulation. Give me Colorado weather--real winters, but the sun will come out and melt the snow. And the summers don't make you gag on the heat the second you walk outside.

My take on #1, GrizzlyMan is probably my favorite all time Doc, #2 he was crazy as shit, but if the airlines hadn't of upcharged him on his return flight..he would likely still be Effing with them bearas. I too have heard the audio, and I loved it too. Can't really feel bad for him, bears got to eat too and if'n there isn't any fish available and there is a couple of dumbasses living amongst the hungriest of all mammals..welp, methinks we call that natural selection. Me being a good ol East Texaner growing up, and slightly West Texaner now..I don't know much about bears..other than this: #1: Don't eff with bears.#2: Bears are not friendly like Winnie, they look at you..like you would look at 60 day dry aged ribeye fresh off the grill.#3: Always refer to rule #1

My brother was on a run yesterday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming & saw a bear... scary. I would vote Croc or gator attack as equal or worse, or maybe venomous* (sp?) snake bite.

Sorry the "Grizzly Man's" name was Treadwell not Treadway. Here's the audio. Not posting it to be morbid or anything like that. It sends chills and my hair stand up.

The snake just wants to get away from you.  Gators will normally only attack if you get to close to them.

Bears will hunt your ass down.  If you run from them, it only makes you fun food.
