Triumph Over Tragedy: Rangers Roll Into All-Star Break

Thursday: The lowest point in the history of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Sunday: The high point of Texas' baseball season.

Was sitting at a blackjack table in Las Vegas when I looked up and saw Nolan Ryan in front of a microphone on TV. As the closed caption scrolled "Josh is very distraught," my initial thought was uh-oh, relapse.

Then I read the news. Then I saw the video.

And then I was amazed at what happened in Arlington over the weekend.

In the wake of a fan death that could've spiraled a younger, more psychologically fragile team into a loss of focus and games, the Rangers instead swept the Oakland A's and head into the All-Star break with a season-high seven-game winning streak.

A year ago the Rangers were swept by the Orioles heading into the break and stood at 50-38 with a 4.5-game lead over the Angels. This year they have baseball's sixth-best record at 51-41 and a one-game lead on Anaheim.

Not bad for a team that played five weeks without Josh Hamilton, that was repeatedly forced to hand the ball to Dave Bush and Mark Lowe, and that desperately, dramatically soothed last week's darkness with weekend of fireworks.

With Craig Gentry playfully pulling on Matt Harrison's goatee as Neftali Feliz nailed down Sunday's 2-0 win, the Rangers zip into the break with some impressive stats:

*10 shutouts, most by the club before the break.

*3 starters -- Harrison, C.J. Wilson and Alexi Ogando -- with ERAs under 3.20.

*5 All-Stars in Tuesday night's mid-summer classic in Phoenix, including Michael Young, Adrian Beltre, Hamilton, Wilson and Ogando. All to be managed by Ron Washington.

Josh is inexplicably still struggling in day games, drawing a walk before Beltre's homer yesterday but hitless in 35 of his last 36 at-bats in the sunshine. Yet his resolve to combat adversity was reiterated Saturday night.

Given the option to take a day or two off after his flip of a foul ball into the stands led to Brownwood firefighter Shannon Stone losing his balance and then his life (Contribute to his memorial fund here), Hamilton instead capped a Rangers' rally with a dramatic two-run, walk-off homer.

Here's hoping the Rangers only losses after the break are on the field.

Not a Yankee fan but C.C. Sabathia 13-4 with 2.72 era, Not an All-Star ?

Sabathia pitched sunday making him ineligible to pitch in the all-star game. He did get in by voting though but was replaced by Ogando.

I guess it's more evidence the MLB All Star game is turning into the NFL Pro Bowl game. The best players aren't necessarily the ones playing in the game. As of today,16 players have backed out of the game. This is why the winner of the MLB AS game shouldn't decide home field for the WS.

So your first thought when seeing Nolan on tv was Josh having a relapse? You don't have the Effing intranet or twitter on your mini phone that fits in your mini garanimal back pocket? I call bullshit, Head of all douchers. I'm quite sure even with all your partying, somebody texted or called and told you about it prior to Nolan's presser. Glad you are still bringing the suck!

Richie didn't post the video, he didn't kill the guy either. Get a life, and if he is such a heartless bastard here's an idea... DONT READ THE BLOG.

You're right, he didn't post the video, but he did post a link after Nolan had a press conference announcing that Shannon's wife begged him to ask the media to quit showing it. It's not illegal but it is in bad taste and done for nothing but sensationalism and page views. Only a douchebag like RW would do it and only an asshole like you would defend something like this.

That's great, but removing the link to the video would even greater.

And to the rest of you bitches.  Im back from vacation and ready to muse with you daily again.  After a short lived tie for second, all is well again in SFBL after a 5 point day yesterday, Im back to a 9 pt lead at the break.  As for the red shoes, nice way to go into the break, Ive enjoyed watching from home as it stupid to go sit in 106 heat at 7 pm.

I still haven't watched that video, but thanks for the temptation RW. I have a 5 and 6 year old, the thought of either of them watching me die, just makes me sick to my stomach.

I guess you didn’t also watch the video of Nolan relaying the request of the Stone family to NOT show the video of Mr. Stones Fall. Like Davy said not even a link to the memorial fund either. What selfish heartless ass you are.

Looks like someone slapped the midgets little hand and made him add a link to the memorial fund. Hats off to whoever that was.

Welcome back midget. Thank you for not posting about your Vegas trip. I'm glad you realize that we don't give a shit.

I think linking to the video was in poor taste. Probably should've included a link to the memorial fund.
