Rangers Building Momentum For Second Half, and the Future

The Rangers start their post-break schedule tonight in Seattle. Despite a seven-game winning streak, baseball's sixth-best record and a one-game lead in the AL West, president Nolan Ryan sounds none too satisfied.

"It concerns me," Ryan told ESPN when asked to assess the state of the Rangers at the break and as they move toward the trading deadline at the end of the month. "I see the same thing, that they haven't had the same intensity. I worry about that."

I'm hearing a lot of folks tell me to watch second baseman Ian Kinsler dogging it, as in not running out grounders and pop-ups. Not good. I'm on it.

I'm also hearing Rangers folks tell me how excited the organization is about their recent signings.

Of course we've seen a glimpse of Leonys Martin, the Cuban outfielder who hit .348 with four homers and 10 stolen bases at AA Frisco and has since been promoted to AAA Round Rock.

But while we were focusing on fans falling from stands and the re-emergence of those Anaheim Angels, the Rangers were building their future foundation by signing two 16-year-old prospects. And spending big bucks to do so.

Wow.

A team that a year ago was having company credit cards declined and about to be hurled into bankruptcy is suddenly spending to the tune of a $3.45 million signing bonus to Ronald Guzman and $5 million to Nomar Mazara, both gold-star Dominican prospects. And the latest? Apparently a $1.5 million bonus to Venezuelan pitcher Yohander Mendez, another 16-year-old.

And those are on top of the $15.5 million contract awarded to Martin in May.

I saw Martin play several games in Frisco.  He was a man among boys...

His first game at Round Rock did nothing to dispute that.

umm, go Rangers!  so lemme get this straight, Hey Josh, stop hustiling you are going to hurt yourself, Hey Kins, hustle, your being a lazy bitch.  They both have been prone to injuries so what do you want, kinz running out bouncers to first and pulling a hammy or what.  Anyhow anyone seen Dewy Cheatem n Air? its fucking hot

If Kins pulled a hammy running out a for sure groudout, I'd be pissed about that. He's doing what game dictates lately, we'll see if his newfound confidence arrived in Sea tonight though. The Kins debate is primarily about his home/road splits, at home he's Babe Ruth..on the road he hits like a babe named Ruth. The next time RW is on something (other than his boyfriend or some skanky lake trash) will be the first time. POWI've arrived back home after a 3 day statewide tour. Getting to work hand crafting a new Broken End for tomorrow..it'll be more like Real Kergo and less like giveup RW.

Kinsler will probably finish the year with 40 doubles, 20+ HRs, 100+ walks and 30+ steals while playing plus defense. Who cares if he doesn't run out every single pop up. Stop reading the DMN website commentors

Not sure what your point is, but that's status quo.

The Rangers were hamstrung by Tom Lucifer Wayne Hicks and MLB because of Hicks, but that regime is gone. Now they have money guys in ownership with different attitudes. Plus attendance is up big this year, they have the new TV deal, we're the 4th biggest market in baseball, and Cliff Lee isn't tying up lots of money for 7 years, so I don't see a problem with investing in scouting and young prospects. They seem to have a good scouting system in place the past few years anyway.

You're rather late to the party on the Kinsler debate. Stick to ridiculous speculation about Hamilton's well-being.

RW is not completely off on this one (I cain't believe I typed that).  Nadel was talking about how Warsh was on Kins to catch popups above the hat instead of his usual "fashionably aloof" methods.

Speaking of Warsh, only 71 more days until Moneyball hits the big screens:http://tinyurl.com/68yhusf   http://tinyurl.com/5socmyd
