Good News: The Lockout's Almost Over. Bad News: So Are Two-a-Days.

I'll never forget the image. It was 2009 and your Cowboys were holding their afternoon training camp practice at San Antonio's Alamodome. In shorts. The pace and feel of coach Wade Phillips' camp mimicked that of a leisurely picnic kicking off a weekend 10-year high school reunion.

Lots of back-slapping. Lots of story-telling. Tons of laughing. Seemingly very little teaching. Absolutely no hitting.

Appalled by what he saw -- including defensive lineman Igor Olshansky parading onto the field and doing his pre-practice stretching in a Tam 'O Shanter cap -- former Cowboys' offensive lineman Erik Williams sauntered up to the sideline and asked to no one in particular but everyone in the building:

"What the fuck is going on here?!"

The eye-rolling scene was repeated during that camp upon the arrivals of Jay Novacek, Daryl Johnston, Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman.

Sorry, 'Boys. Get used to it.

With the NFL's lockout close to being lifted and football training camps about to commence, one of the changes forthcoming in the new 10-year collective bargaining agreement is the abolition of two-a-day practices.

One key concession made by the owners will effectively eliminate two-a-day practices during training camp as a health and safety issue that players termed critical to an agreement, the sources said. Teams will be allowed to have some helmetless and padless non-contact walk-through practices in lieu of a second training camp practice on the same day.

Somewhere Jimmy Johnson just vomited. And right here Jason Garrett is scrambling to find a new way to change Dallas' soft culture.

Garrett won't say it publicly, but he cringed at some of Phillips' player-friendly concessions. The ol' quarterback played for Johnson in the mid-90s, a time when the Cowboys routinely had two full-contact, full-tackle practices outside in the 100-degree heat at Austin's St. Edwards University. And, oh by the way, they won three Super Bowls in four years.

Changing a team's mindset and yanking the Cowboys from 6-10 to being contenders again won't be easy. With the concessions by owners in this lockout agreement, Garrett's task just got tougher.

How can you be an "in my day" geezer with an earring, ripped jeans, and the maturity level of a Hollister employee at the same time?

What was a major sticking point in negotiations? How retired players will be taken care of. Why? Because they got beaten to a bloody pulp by the game and now guys in their 40s and 50s are living the lives of men in the 60s, 70s, or 80s. Good ole day syndrome keeps baseball from evolving, but we need to keep football from evolving too, especially when the safety of the players is an aspect? Bullsh.

Two-a-days is in no way necessary, I can understand why players hate it, and coaches who can stand and watch and yell who don't like the change can deal.

And not everything has a link to the Super Bowls almost 20 years ago. They won because they were talented and focused, not because they practiced twice some days in August. You're insulting those championship teams trying to tell us that if only Wade had pushed this team harder they could be comparable.

Methinks that the Herschel trade had more to do with them 3 SB's than two a days..but RW is the resident expert of all things sport and Douche.

Awww, leave the little guy alone! He's just taking the "grizzled tough guy" stance because he thinks it's the right thing to do. You have to say that if you're a Sports Writer/Broadcaster, right? And if he keeps talking like a "real man," maybe that'll help negate his reputation as a little girlie man.

Hello McFly??? The way you table it the Cowboys are the only team in the league that will not doing the two-a-day thing. Its league wide Whitt!!!! Every single other team will be trying to “change there soft culture”. I disagreed with Wilson's approach to practice last year as well. I also don't think a team has to beat the fuck out of each other in 100 plus degree heat to win a super bowl.

you are absolutely welcome to join Sportatorium SFBL in 2012. Are we doing fantasy football? We've lost a couple of teams now, we need some hardcore players that can bring more to the table than I can.

If you need somebody to be a consistant last place holder in your league, I'm your blogger.

What is being missed is that now players will be forced to practice in pads more than ever and contact will be a part of practice more that it ever has.  The chiefs pracitced in pads almost 80% of training camp last year and had the least injured team.

That's the way football goes.I was never near their level, but played football from 7th grade through 12th. If we fucked up, we didn't get a water break, and the funny thing was, our parents weren't standing outside of practice complaining to the coaches. It's weird, noone died, but looking back I guess it's highly possible we could have. Now on a hot 104 degree August day, the one thing I don't miss about high school? Two a days. These guys condition year round. No need to pretend like they're in the military for two weeks to make sure they're "conditioned".
