American Women: Fun to Watch Running Around in Soccer Shorts

Hope Solo.jpg
You know what I think of women's sports. Why watch them when you can see men run faster, jump higher or hit the ball longer?

And you know what I think of soccer. A potentially entertaining game is ruined by archaic offsides rules, ridiculous fake injuries and the worst officiating of any sport on the planet.

Combine those two on Sunday and we got ... magic.

It was 12 years ago to the day that Brandi Chastain scored on a penalty kick to beat China in the Rose Bowl and give the U.S. the Women's '99 World Cup. Since then, though, little progress has been made in the push to make women's soccer a mainstream sport. A major professional league came and went and for the most part, if you're not an 8-year-old girl with a pink jersey on a team called the Hot Shots, you don't give a damn. (As big as youth soccer is in North Texas, I'm shocked none on the U.S.' 36-member player pool is from around here.)

I scoffed in Las Vegas at the sportsbooks actually taking bets on the 2011 Women's World Cup.

But yesterday morning I gave the U.S.-Brazil quarterfinal try. And, boy, was I rewarded.

It wasn't as exciting or meaningful as, say, Josh Hamilton's walk-off homer against the A's Saturday night in Arlington, but the American's penalty-kick victory over the Brazilians did provide a patriotic punch to my skeptical kisser.

The U.S. led 1-0 after a Brazil own goal, then were tied 1-1 after a ridiculous do-over penalty kick awarded Brazil. Playing 10 on 11 after having a player ejected, the U.S. fell behind in the first 15-minute overtime. But down a goal and a player and in extra time of the second overtime, the Americans tied the game in the 122nd minute on a gorgeous, gutsy header by veteran Abby Wambach.

In penalty kicks, goalie Hope Solo saved a shot and Ali Krieger put in the game-winner that set off jubilation in Germany and vibrated my phone with texts of "didja see that!"

For a memorable Sunday morning women's soccer gave me a thrill and even a couple chills.

In return, I'll extend them an apology. Well played, women.

I might even find time to watch Wednesday morning's semifinal against France.

"You know what I think of women's sports. Why watch them when you can see men run faster, jump higher or hit the ball longer?"

-- Well, for starters, because you are a sports columnist, not a men's sports columnist. Second, because most women find it awesome when dudes don't discredit the female gender just because women don't sprint to the finish as fast as men. And you can take that any number of ways, good sir!

Hey-o! I'm here all week!

Literally, like, the entire week, every week. High-fives.

GO USA!

"the worst officiating of any sport on the planet"

Despite some notable instances of egregious calls in the past two World Cups (2010 & 11), there is no sport in the world that will ever come close to knocking basketball off the perch of "worst officiating."

I watched the 2 minute recap on espn about 11am..backed up the DVR when that chick scored on a header..made the wifey look..the end. Go USA sure, but standing down for any woman sport .. As Jake Z says, That's SG!

When I read or hear soccer, Charlie Brown's teacher starts making noise in my head.

How many baseball games do you have to watch to see a walk off home run? Baseball can be incredible boring, and can be quite fun to watch if you know strategy and the game. Softball is the same way, except the short field and pitch makes the game a lot faster.Sports is about athletic ability and strategy. With two girls and one son, I know that female sports do not and probably will not get ever the attention they deserve. If people like you would watch more women sports, you will find a lot of talent and determination---aspects of the game that makes one appreciate their talent.

The title, the article and the insinuation that this soccer game was better than men's game because of the women are sexy is ridiculous. It was a fantastic game that showed their confidence, consistency, calmness, talent, and focus. These soccer ladies are sexy, in part, because of the their athletic bodies. But, so is Adam Wainwright but we don't see in the reviews of the Cardinals' how hot we women think he is. While beauty, inside and outside, can and should be celebrated, please don't diminish the talent and drive that these ladies had in the game. The game was more than well-played and instead of giving a contrived short apology, show us you are serious about that apology: cover at least three women's games (regardless of the sports) and write real sports review.

"It wasn't as exciting or meaningful as, say, Josh Hamilton's walk-off homer against the A's". Really disagree with you on that. The Rangers game was 1 out of 162... the world cup occurs every 4 years...It doesn't get much better than that win, men or women!

No woman's sport is going to be mainstream. That being said, the woman's world cup is usually exciting because the top players in the world are on display. There are several area girls over 8 that probably give a damn about the sport - three girls from area club teams are on the 20 member US U17 roster. A professional woman's soccer league currently exists with the New York team roster including the best woman's player in the world (Marta). A walkoff HR in one game out of a 162 game season is more meaningful than a world cup last minute game saving goal against Brazil - nice try. BTW, check out the Swedish team on Wednesday. They have some speedster blondes that are not too hard on the eyes.

Soccer.  meh.

Women's soccer.  Bigger meh.

Women's sports.  Even bigger meh, unless it's hot chicks playing women's tennis.

funny thing happened in my house sunday morning.  I get up walk the dogs sit down on the couch and flip on The US game.  Mrs Merkin rolls outta bed nd sits on the couch, looks at me akwardly and say in the most sarcastic of voices, " Really, you beat met to the TV to watch this"  But after sitting through the first half and getting more and more irritated at the ref and the brazilians for making a mockery of the FIFA Fair play slogan, the wife was as into it as me.  And when Wambach tied the game in the 122nd minute, she actually stood up high fived me and went and made us shots.  What a game and to win that game only felt like justice for the first 90 minutes of shit the refs gave us.

Mrs. RDP1: Why are you watching soccer, you hate soccer.Me: Honey it's the world cup and Team USA is playing.Mrs. RDP1: (stops, looks at me strangely, then sees that it's women's soccer, shakes head, rolls eyes and walks away)

This brings me to another point. RW, you should make a top 5 list of women's sports to watch. Soccer has to be #1, followed by, beach volleyball? Basketball and hockey are at the bottom.

And to another point, I'm totally with you on the soccer thing and no players from this area. It's hard to go a couple of blocks in my fair borough on the weekend and not run into some kind of soccerfest. It's just strange to me, how everyone thinks Texas is this huge football state yet I'm conservatively guessing that 2x more kids play soccer. Thoughts?

With your sexist commentary, women's soccer is better off without you.

I only enjoy watching soccer during the World Cup, both Men's and Women's. Couldn't care less about it anyother time. FC Dallas could move or fold and I wouldn't even notice.

Over the last few years, I've started to enjoy watching soccer. Unlike women's basketball, women's soccer is just as fun as men's.

Colby Lewis missing a game was more important to him than this soccer game, I guarantee you. He gets more web hits criticizing a guy for missing 1 game than delving into soccer.

It was like that where I grew up. I went to a smaller high school and didn't have a soccer team though, which might be the reason soccer fizzles out in some areas.

Wouldn't care. Then again Davy's in a pretty mean dry spell.

Yeah, I grew up in a small town outside of San Antonio. It's sad to say, I didn't know there were high school soccer teams at the time, or ever saw soccer being played in San Antonio. It's still not big down there at all, but up here in the Plano area, it's just unbelievable. It even pushes my kids baseball season back a month because they share the fields.
