2011 Cowboys Camp Day 2: My Top 10 Observer-ations

10. Was it just me and Fox 4's Mike Doocy, or was owner Jerry Jones choking up a bit yesterday when talking about the voyage that was lockout negotiations? "We took the boat out into a perfect storm and got the boat back home." The older he gets, the more sentimental and emotional Jerry gets. I guess 15 years -- and counting -- without a Super Bowl is breaking him down.

9. In case you missed it, every day will look the same down here in San Antonio. 10-11 a.m. walkthrough in helmets and shorts; 2:30-5:30 p.m. in full pads. Said head coach Jason Garrett: "We're going to hit the ground running with a fast tempo and we're going to do things with a sense of urgency." Wade Phillips, R.I.P.

8. It's not a party until something gets broken and training camp doesn't officially start until Channel 8's Dale Hansen -- draped in his usual Hawaiian shirt -- asks his blowhard question. On Wednesday it was "How the hell did you guys win any games last year?"

7. Though they can't be formally announced until Friday at 5, and though the players (because they are veteran free agents) can't practice until the first day of the new NFL year (expected to be next Thursday, August 4), the Cowboys have now signed starting left tackle Doug Free and starting left guard Kyle Kosier. As for center Andre Gurode, he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in June and will start camp on the Physically Unable to Perform List, meaning he can be moved to the active roster at any time.

6. Bill Miller's Bar-B-Q across from The Alamodome is very overrated in all its cafeteriaishness, but its location makes it irresistible. On the other hand, if you want the strongest margarita on the Riverwalk it's at Zuni. Goes by the name of "Cactus Viper." Trust me.

5. Unless I missed him, I didn't see Wyoming receiver Harry Seaward during Wednesday's conditioning drills. Hmm. Maybe the Cowboys didn't like Harry Seaward as much as I thought.

4. When asked about the secondary yesterday Jones, Garrett and vice president Stephen Jones rattled off every name from Barry Church to Danny McCray to Akwasi Owusu-Ansah. Even though the Cowboys can clear some salary-cap room by re-structuring the contracts of Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin, it looks like the Jets are the front-runner for Nnamdi Asomugha and Dallas won't be part of the bidding unless it cuts veteran Terence Newman. Deflating.

3. On the opening of camp the Cowboys' No. 3 receiver is Kevin Ogletree? Sam Hurd? Manny Johnson? Dwayne Harris? Jesse Holley? Teddy Williams? Answer: No one. Gotta pick up someone here, right?

2. Much as you and I would like it, I hear free agent safety Michael Huff ain't headed here because the Cowboys don't want him here. "No way," a scout told  me this morning. Bummer. The Cowboys are desperate for help at safety, but right now the most logical addition is Abram Elam, the former Cowboy who started the last two seasons for the Browns under new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

1. Most surprising sight from the opening press conference? Jones actually admitting how shitty last year was. During his 14 minute opening salvo, Jerry said "We had a really bad year. We stunk it up, no question about it." Forgive and forget?

10. It was probably just Doocy and you stole it from his Twitter or something.

9. Didn't miss it, just don't care.

8. He should have asked, "Why in the hell did you guys hire that tool Armen?"

7. Old News.

6. I don't trust anything you say.

5. Your head was probably so far up Jerry's ass, you missed him.

4. This has been reported for a few days now.

3. Should have never traded Patrick Crayton.

2. Much as we would like it for you to write more about the Rangers, since they are actually in season and all, you keep saying "no way".

1. A more surprising site would be for you to admitt that for a while now, your writing has been piss poor, you post bullshit opinions to draw people offsides and get page hits and you use this blog to pimp your station. Who knows maybe then we would be able to forgive and forget?

I know we just started training camp, but who's running SFFL? I call not it. We need to figure out our point system or if it's going to be a pick 'em. Definitely head to head, no more of this roto league.

#6 I suggest trying the PoBoy Plus special(sandwich, side, drink, dessert) Get the PoBoy cut lean, get the fries or okra, pecan pie for dessert, and Bill Miller's sweet tea w/extra ice.  Bill Miller is a San Antonio staple. I'd much rather have that than Spring Creek or Dickey's and it's A LOT cheaper.

#5--If they can't make one of those guys a number 3 receiver, we're in trouble. They have a potent 3 receiver threat(Witten, Austin, Bryant) and hopefully John Phillips will come back strong and maybe Martellus finally does something? I like this offense out of the Ace set more than any other, gives them more flexibility to run and pass and have our best receivers and tight ends in the game. DeMarco is a pretty good receiver as well.

#2 Pretty bummed about Michael Huff. Smart guy on a bad team. I guess that's why the experts get paid the big bucks and spares like me cruise a blog.

Good start RW, let's follow it up strong and/or have Sybil Summers, Sybil1053, or Sybil'sBeaver throw in a posting.

Dale Hansen - still butt-hurt over the whole Switzer thing, huh?

Bill Millers - they have good sweet tea.  Other than that its a big meh.

Jerry's admission - he's trying to keep the Cowboys from becoming the Rangers and Stars.  Dallas is a winners town.  Half this town didn't give two shits about the Rangers until they started winning.  When the Stars were winning, the place was sold out ever week.  Now you'll be lucky to GIVE a Stars ticket away.  Jerrah has a big mortgage and is trying to keep the Cowboys relevant.

These things I know: Last year about killed Jerra, the team will play better with Redball in charge, Dale asks a tough question every once in a while, and RW will douche up any bar that's name starts with a Z.

I remember the days  of the olive branch, before the west Texas fires came and burned them all down. Coincidentally, RW's writing hasn't gotten any better since then either.

JSIB- if you are going to set up the league also set up a pick league...I think any # of people can join pick 'ems. Maybe we can get RW to join in (yeah right).

I'll set it up this weekend and send invites to everyone that's in the SFBL, then we'll let some of the guys from here fill it out.  I'll take your suggestions under advisement sir.  Any other suggestions are welcomed.

The team will play harder and smarter, but relative to the rest of the division/league, their talent is down. They're gonna struggle this year, and I predict no playoffs. And next year will be even worse because of continued questionable cap wrangling and terrible drafting.

I thought it was a pretty good training camp report. Timely info, Hansen report, Harry Seaward update. The only issue that I have is no one made the effort to find out if Mike Jenkins has ever heard of 'The Who'.
