Mavs' DeShawn Stevenson Arrested in Irving for Public Intoxication. He Gets a Free Pass, Right?

DeShawn Stevenson.jpg

Interviewed Mavericks' guard DeShawn Stevenson on 105.3 The Fan yesterday afternoon about 2:45. He sounded happy. But not drunk.

Listen for yourself.

My first question: "Have you gotten over your Finals' hangover yet?" His answer: "Not really."

In the wake of the Mavericks' NBA championship he talked about hating the Heat and not partying with teammates on South Beach after Game 6 -- instead playing cards with buddies -- because his wife is pregnant.

Apparently after he hung up he commenced -- or contiuned -- drinking.

Because Stevenson last night was arrested in Irving on charges of public intoxication. But I think he gets a pass, right?

After all he was drinking and walking. Not drinking and driving.

Irving police said they found Stevenson alone around 10:30 p.m. at the Grand Venetian apartments and that he didn't know where he was. He does not live at the complex.

Officers put Stevenson through field sobriety tests and then took him into custody without incident. Stevenson was released from the Irving Jail on this morning after posting $475 bail.

Serious question: In light of his outstanding service to the well-being of our community, shouldn't officers have given him a ride home instead of a trip to the drunk tank?

I have an exclusive interview with the officer who found and arrested DeShawn being released Wednesday. Hear the other side. Want to know why they didn't just call him a cab? Check www.MiaDallas.com

Gordo said this morning, that more details are likely forthcoming..#1 DeShawn thought that the Orlando jail would be alot nicer #2 There may of been a car running while he was outside of it looking for his phone.

First off, the dude just won a NBA Championship! Let him call someone to come get him! 2ndly, I have had personal experience with the same cop, and let me tell you, worlds biggest dick alive! He should have been fired for what he did to me, this guy is why ppl hate cops! Go Mavs!!

Well, all I can speak to is my own experiences having grown up in Irving since 1962. When I was a teen and young adult, the town was a little smaller, but not tiny. And the IPD used their own discretion in these situations. One time, when I was 18 (the drinking age at the time) They followed me home and made sure I knew to stay inside for a few hours. Then once, when I was a little older, they took me to jail for walking home a little tipsy. Because I pointed out the wrong house. So maybe it had to do with not being cognizant enough to know where I was? Either way, they treated me with respect and in the end I needed the wake up call anyway. It's a misdemeanor, so it didn't hurt me record-wise. I think, In this situation, had I been the cop, I might have called a family member to come get him. A few years ago they probably would have. But today, with everyone watching every little move, one step out of line and the cop ends up losing rank or something...  I think society, reporters, youtube and the like has cost us much of this freedom. The use of the officer's discretion is now dictated by what is PC, not what he'd like to do. It's sad, really.

You should have seen me after every playoff game....Im surprised I never got a PI...but then again I dont go to Irving...that was his mistake...perhaps if it was the Irving Mavs they would have given him a ride

I betcha he would have diplomatic immunity in Cleveland...heck, the cops in Ohio would've probably purchased him a hooker! not that he has to purchase them...jus saying.

Hey, I was at the parade and they all looked either intoxicated or severly hung over...and they all proceeded to drive home in their cars and they could have easily been pulled over.  The ironic thing about that - they were being escorted by cops!!!!  Ha ha!  They all get a pass!!!  Go Mavs!!!

For those of you counting at home, Richie has it Sports > Law (here), and Sports > Family (Colby).

Say what you want about Irving cops, but I guarantee you that 99% of all cops in the area see a black guy with neck tats, and their first thought is to arrest rather than help. Being an NBA Champion never entered the equation.

Come on Richie. Think before you type. There is a very good chance that DeShawn doesn't live in Irving or even close to it. So a cop isn't going to drive someone to cities or so over to there home when the cop's jurisdiction is in Irving and at the same time is on the clock. Come on, man.

HEY YOU, IN THE BACK
HEY YOU, IN THE BACK

Why put blame on the cops for this ? They were doing their job just like the overzealous reporters falling all over themselves to tell everyone about what a Maverick did.

Dude kinda wiped out his chances of getting free passes when he decided face tattoos were a good idea.

Free pass? No. If he cooperated, maybe write him up for the least possible. If there was no one there to take care of him taking him to the drunk tank was a good call for the cops and DeShawn. My brother-in-law was a Dallas cop back in the late '70s and early '80s and tells stories of how they would drive Cowboys players home in similar situations. But with every move a cop makes being recorded and under review now a days they can't do that.

I'm actually with RW on his final thought.  What kind of dick cops wouldn't just take him home?  Irving is the taint of DFW, like RW is the taint of DFW sporty talk.  Stay hard DeShawn!  Give me a call next time, I'll grab a bottle of MadDog20/20 and 20 bucks and cmon over and play some gin rummy.

Are you serious RW? Should he be given a free pass because he helped the Mavs win the NBA Finals? Hell no. He should be treated like everyone else.

I bet if you were to ever get arrested you would pull out the, "Don't you know who I am!!!!?"

has not been my personal experience, having lived here off and on for 49 years. Been in their jail a time or two also. I have noticed the younger breed of IPD beat cop is pretty short tempered and aggressive compared to "back in the day." however. ( I like your newest paintings, btw, Ricardo. )

Agree 100% on him not knowing where he was. Had he lived there I'm sure they would've walked him to his apartment. Unless the cop was a dick. Back in college, a buddy of mine needed a ride home. I went to Fry St to pick him up and pulled into his parking lot (complex by all the frat houses at UNT). I helped out of my car, he tripped and a UNT cop (notorious assholes) who was parked behind a frat house took him even after I explained he lived and he was smart to call me for a ride.

We wouldn't of won the title if it were the Irving Mavs, they would have deported JJ a long time ago.  POW

Agreed. If the public got wind of it, with FOI the media would get those tapes and there'd be hell to pay. Can't fault them on this one.

If he had been treated like everyone else for DRINKING but NOT DRIVING, he would have been taken home -- not arrested.

But they wouldn't know who RW is, I'd give Deshawn a ride home...in a heartbeat.  Shoot, I'd volunteer to wash his car afterwards ..Thanks for all of those deadly three's DeShawn.

No, that's a false statement. I know 2 people that have been taken to jail for public intoxication. It is against the law and a lot of police officers enforce it.

Mishon

I agree with you that what he did isn't a big deal, but my point is if the cop would have arrested ordinary Bob, Joe or Harry then he should arrest DeShawn. I don't like athletes getting special treatment.

Now. Now.  There's no reason to be jealous.  I realize my posts on this blog keep you up at night, too.  There's plenty Rooster to go around for all of you.
