Almost All My NBA Texas Exes Live in ... Obscurity

Texas Longhorns Hoops.jpg
Soon as the Mavericks "drafted" Texas shooting guard Jordan Hamilton, I received texts and tweets and a couple of phone calls from excited fans. Hamilton played for the Longhorns, so he must be good, right?

W-R-O-N-G.

Not sure if any school has more NBA busts than the one down south in Austin. Rick Barnes' team was the only team to have three players drafted in the first round -- Hamilton, Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph -- and yet somehow lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Arizona.

A lot of folks are somehow upset that Dallas didn't hang onto one of "our own." But a couple huge reasons why trading Hamilton and the No. 57 pick and acquiring Portland shooting guard Rudy Fernandez made perfect sense.

1. Fernandez makes the Mavericks better quicker. The current nucleus of 30-somethings doesn't have a huge window, so the time to win is here and now.

2. There's a long list of Texas exes who suggest Hamilton will flop at the next level.

With the three first-round picks, Texas now has a nation-leading eight first-round players in the last six NBA Drafts. But in their style-over-substance history -- other than big-time All-Stars Slater Martin, LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Durant -- what do the 'Horns have to show for it?

Avery Bradley -- 19th overall in '10

Damion James -- 24th in '10

D.J. Augustin -- 9th in '08.

Dexter Pittman -- 32nd in '07

P.J. Tucker -- 35th in '06

Daniel Gibson -- 42nd in '06

Royal Ivey -- 37th in '04

T.J. Ford -- 8th in '03

Chris Mihm -- 7th in '00

Travis Mays -- 14th in '90

Lance Blanks -- 26th in '90

LaSalle Thompson -- 5th in '82

Ron Baxter -- 22nd in '80

Johnny Moore -- 47th in '77

Just a piss poor attempt at drawing Texas fans offsides, methinks that KD and Aldridge would help raise the baseline quite a bit. Hell, DJ and Booby .. Ivey, TJ and Mihm have been serviceable at times. Other then Blake Griffin, name me another bad ass that has come out of the Big 12 since the Durantula. There isn't one, Aggs/BU/KU have put some guys in the league .. But they ain't exactly tearing it up.

methinks Paul Pierce is the only somewhat superstar out of the big 12 that has a ring and isnt a back of the bench player.  Me also thinks that Durant will have one soon enough, if he can get away from Russell "Im the Star" Westbrook

Pierce is from Dirks draft though, I said tell me a Big 12 guy since KD and Aldridge, there isn't one. RW bags on UT not producing talent, but doesn't say crap about every other school in the southwest. Typical Douche move, by the douchiest "writer/broadcaster" in the biz.

Richie - Posting controversial comments is not going to co-relate to radio ratings. Agree with trading Hamilton. Am an UT ex but Hamilton is a low IQ player (Josh Howard) that would have been a poor fit with the Mavs. You cannot just create a list and leave out Durant and Aldridge to fit your argument that UT draft picks are all busts.

A lot of folks are upset the Mavs didn't keep one of their own?  I haven't heard one person anywhere (internet, radio, or real world) mention that.

I think the lack of success of players 25 years ago is a *crucial* data point here.

Yea, Johnny Moore was an NBA bust. That's why they put that 00 jersey up there along with the Admiral and the Iceman. Last time I checked the jersey was not obscured by anything other than one sportswriter's nearsightedness

I think Durant and Aldridge are really all that matters, but most of these guys are too young to come to a conclusion on whether they are busts.  Damion James was hurt last year, he will be good.  TJ had some solid years and is still a solid back up PG.  Lebron sure liked Boobie Gibson for a few years, solid player.  Big men like Dex always take a few years to develop.  And Augustin will be good in the next couple of years.  Avery came out too early, should still be in school.

And even though Barnes' gameplanning drives me crazy, he does make the tournamnt every year, almost every school in the country would take that.  It's like the Mavs winning 50 every year but with only one, glorious, super awesome, incredible title to show for it.

And yes I'm a Longhorn.

Sorry, but Durant doesn't even really count. The guy would've gone first round out of high school if not for the NBA's rules. His talent and first round pick had nothing to do with playing in Austin. (And hell, given that they went nowhere in the tourney with him, I think that point stands even more relevant.)

It's a good thing with these bad postings(with a weekend of content to use no less) that we have such good good reporting on Unfair Park. JWP is finally going down, maybe, possibly.

Oh well, let's try again tomorrow RW. To be good in the NBA, you shoot 45%, Football complete over 55%, baseball .300. I'm going to give you an 0 for 2 today, the Hamilton store being a fielder's choice, or fouled while shooting, or penalty on the play(covering all my bases).

What ever became of Luke Axtell?

I loved Axtell, last seen with a guitar walking due west through the cornfields of Kansas. Appreciate your effort Penders!

You're kidding, right? Without doing research, just off the top of my head, half of those guys were starters in the NBA at some point in their career. Johnny Moore's number is retired for the Spurs and if he hadn't come down with desert fever, would have had a pretty good career average. I'm not sure if you watched the Texas/Arizona game(I'm guessing you didn't). The 5 second call was horrible. If they get the timeout there, the game is basically over pending getting the ball inbounded. Final? 70-69.Hell of a game, Derrick Williams is a stud, I'd take him over the 3 Texas players drafted combined.

Yes, the 5 second call was bad, but the actual timeout call was the single stupidest play of the entire season, and it allowed Arizona the chance to take advantage of the mayhem that is an out-of-bounds play with college refs.

You're really counting people who played 20+ years ago? And, ScottsMerkin, those who are UT haters for no other reason than "just cuz" are the real cunts here.

meh, Im not a hater just cuz, Im a hater #1 bc Im a Kansas fan, and #2 a UT fan once threw a punch at my wife (he missed) bc she clapped when Arkansas scored a touchdown against UT

College basketball in late June Richie? Pathetic. Go back to talking about Hamilton's blue eyes or Dirk throwing a pitch last Friday. Wait. Don't.

I see more UNT there than UT.  That's like saying you can't spell OUT without OU. Or FOUL, GOUT(um UT there too), INCESTUOUS, etc. FUCK, SUCK, and STUCK have UK in them. Much more clever than the Cunt reference.

I prefer the, you cant spell cOcksUcker without OU, but thats just me.
