2011 NBA Draft: Meh.

Derrick Williams.jpg
Derrick Williams -- The best player available
Arizona forward Derrick Williams is a beast. He has 3-point shooting range, can score in the paint with either hand and has an NBA body that can bang and rebound on the low blocks.

And that's it.

The rest of the 2011 NBA Draft class: Weak to questionable. Yes, even projected No. 1 overall pick Kyrie Irving.

I'm a college hoops junkie but -- like you -- I only got to see him play 11 games for Duke last years because of a toe injury. The Cleveland Cavaliers, who lost 26 consecutive games last season, control this draft with picks No. 1 and 4. They also already have Baron Davis on their roster, so we'll see if another point guard makes sense.

The other drama tonight from Newark ...

Yawn.

Who will gamble on tantalizing 19-year-old Turkish center Enes Kanter?

Which Kansas Morris twin (Marcus or Markieff) will go first?

Who will be a bigger bust: Kemba Walker or Jimmer Fredette?

And what of Texas' exes Jordan Hamilton and Tristan Thompson?

The juiciest plot will unfold in Minnesota, where the Timberwolves are entertaining offers for the second overall pick. With point guard Ricky Rubio arriving from overseas, they are said to be considering obtaining Steve Nash as a mentor. The Mavs' rival San Antonio Spurs are also making pre-draft rumblings, reportedly talking about trading All-Star point guard Tony Parker.

For what it's worth, the last five No. 1 picks:

2006: Andreas Bargani, Raptors

2007: Greg Oden, Trailblazers

2008: Derrick Rose, Bulls

2009: Blake Griffin, Clippers

2010: John Wall, Wizards

I'm interested every year, to see who the Spurs pull out of the draft's ass and make a contributor.

Is ESPN going to try to cram Mel Kiper into the draft coverage somehow? I can see them trying to warrant that with a pathetic football tie-in.

All I care about is hearing the name of the dude the Mavs draft that I've never heard of before and who won't see any playing time.

looks like 08 09 and 10 picks were solid, this year notsomuch.  And I wont even watch the draft, ill get all the info I need from twitter so as not to be beaten down by Jay Bilas' "his upside is"

DoJo is at the far end of the bench. Keeping Roddy B company.

Dunno if either one will ever see significant playing time. (watching Tristan Thompson picked 4th by the Cavs).

Bill Simmons has some great trade proposals involving the draft over at grantland.com

Cleveland could really screw things up for Minnesota if they were to take Williams at no. 1. Simmons is always a great read, unlike some other journalists we know and love. :-)

Plus, there is a very good Dirk story at grantland to boot...

I love me some Sports Guy. Heard Richie say one day that he was overrated. If that doesn't scream jealously, I don't know what does.
