The Top 5 Greatest Games in the History of Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk - Thunder.png
For once and all, he pronounces it "No-WIT-skee." Has since the day he stepped off the plane from Germany back in 1998 and arrived at the Mavs' old practice facility at the Baylor-Tom Landry Center in Dallas.

You call him "No-VIT-skee"? He shrugs. Doesn't care.

Likewise, it doesn't bother him that his ESPN highlights -- 24 consecutive free throws -- are relatively boring. Doesn't care that critics still claim he's soft, still giggle at him for getting duped by that creepy ex-girlfriend a couple years ago or that his mentor is a German goofball named Holger.

His unique game is again producing uncanny results, this time on the national stage. Where does last night's performance on Dirk's all-time list of dominance?

5. May 12, 2001 -- Despite needing an IV to combat the flu and having a tooth knocked to the Reunion Arena floor by an errant Terry Porter elbow, scores 30 points and grabs 15 rebounds to help Dallas avoid a Spurs playoff sweep.

4. Nov. 3, 2009 -- Sets a franchise record with 29 of his total 40 points in the fourth quarter in crazy comeback win over the Jazz at AAC.

3. May 22, 2006 -- Caps 37-point, 15-rebound performance with crucial three-point play to force overtime in Game 7 of West Semis in San Antonio.

2. June 1, 2006 -- Fifty points, 12 rebounds in pivotal Game 5 of West Finals against Suns at AAC.

1. May 17, 2011 -- Forty-eight points on 24 of 24 free throws and only 15 shots in Game 1 win over the Thunder. One of the most efficient performances in NBA history.

Sorry, I'm so late to the party..was out of the office til now..WOW what a game for Dirk.  JJ and Jet were very good also.  I was at game #5 on the list, and will never forget watching Dirk jump over the scorer's table to go to the locker room to fix his tooth ..the Phoenix game was awesome too, but give me 2011 Dirk over any other versions.  The reason he's different, is because he's doing the asswhipping now, not the guy that's defending him.

Didn't Dirk have an epic duel w/ Tracy Mcgrady during a regular season game? That is #6 IMHO.

But, Richie, No WIT skee just sounds "soft." But No VIT skee? That just sounds like a tough sum' bitch! Really, I don't give a shit how you pronounce his name. I'm just glad he's a Maverick. But, how is his last name pronounced in Germany?

Game 5, when series momentum is on the line, is a much more pressure situation than Game 1 at home.  As for "percentages".....seriously?  That's your argument?  The 12 boards shows that Dirk was more active all around in that Suns game....he had a bigger effect on the game. Is that really difficult to understand?

I don't know how you rank that Game 5 performance below last night's.  He scored more points, was more active on the boards and it was a more important game.

Richie Whitt has been more productive recently. The new Observer editor must have lit a fire under the boy.

Dirk is a great player and always will be when he goes up I just call him "automatic" cause 9 out of 10 that shot is going in, and the mavs are the most complete and deepest team left in the playoffs and in the NBA.!! It's our year you can just tell good job mavs let's keep it up one game at a time..

I'm going to need you to play wingman for me Richie. You'll make me look a little taller and a little less bald.

He had 4 blocks last night, 0 in that game 5. So you could say he was more of a Defensive factor last night. The difference is efficiency, he scored 50 shooting 14 of 26. 48 shooting 12-15 is so much better that it is unreal. Thats 11 less misses, 11 less positions that the other team had a chance to gain points on the Mavs...

how difficult is it to understand that 12 of 15 is better than 14 of 26?  And how is game 1 on your home court not pressure, you want to go down 1-0 at home to OKC?  Plus he had 4 blocks this game, so instead of rebounding he was blockingshots  not even allowing them to shoot

He had more boards because he didn't have anyone but Dampier and his T-rex arms rebounding next to him. And don't act like the difference between 48 and 50 points is astronomical.

Dirk's 48 didn't include any 3 pointers. He missed 3 shots ALL NIGHT. Let that one sink in. 3 shots missed all night. Essentially he was 36-39 shooting. That's an all-time performance for anyone, and easily Dirk's best game ever.

First of all his percentages were better last night and secondly, no 1 game is more inportant than the other.  They all count the same,

He should tag all his articles "Unintelligible Douche".

Just kidding.  This blog has been pretty high quality lately.  RW can write interesting, well researched stuff when he wants.  In fact, I have noticed very few "mail it in" posts this week. What gives?

Richie is there anyway you can devote a blog post this week to Tom Rathman and red pandas?

Amen. But is he really a different Dirk than we've had all these years?

ScottsMerkin

Thats what people dont understand scruffy, this is a much better team all around so for Dirk to do this and not have a 25 point qtr to make up his points where he HAD to take over, he just dominated all 4 qtrs instead

Although he could be an epic 3 point shooter, he doesnt camp at the 3 point arc anymore. Get Dirk the ball @ the elbow, and its on like Donkey Kong.

He is more agressive now, his willingness to drive and dunk has giving him that extra inch between him and the defender when posting up to be able to make that signature fade away.
