Give Ron Washington Credit for His Desperation Flip-Flop

Categories: Texas Rangers

Ron Washington - Claw.jpg
Rangers' manager Ron Washington loves status quo. Likes the same ol' routine of it all. When something extraordinary happens in the game he delivers his pet philosophical phrase:

"That's the way baseball go."

But in the midst of watching his team lose seven of nine games and seven of eight series with an offense that scored three or fewer runs in half of its last 30 games, the manager who hates change ... changed.

The catalyst? A Seinfeld rerun Monday night, the one where George decides to yank his miserable life out of the gutter by doing the opposite of everything that feels natural.

Julio Borbon, who has batted ninth all year, was in the lead-off spot last night against the Oakland A's. For the first time in his career Michael Young hit clean-up. And after leading off in all 34 of his starts, Ian Kinsler was bumped down to third.

Explained Washington, "Let's see if I'm smart or not."

With a big assist from a strong start by Colby Lewis, the shuffle -- at least for a night -- worked like magic.

The Rangers pounded out 11 hits, produced 18 base-runners and scored seven runs in an easy, 7-2 win over Oakland. Borbon beat out an infield single, Kinsler had a hit, Adrian Beltre (shoved down to sixth in the order) smashed a two-run homer and Young, as usual, wasn't bad, either.

Where would the Rangers be without the guy that at one point in January seemed destined to be gone?

Whether he's playing first, second, shortstop, third or designated hitter, Young is hitting. Last night he had a single, double and two-run triple before walking in the 8th with a six-run lead.

Give credit to Young for being a professional, and credit to Washington for not being too inflexible. Sometimes, even in baseball, a simple swapping of seats delivers a better view.

That's the way change go.

Am I the only one who reads, "seven of nine" and thinks of Star Trek Voyager? Probably.

Without Jham and Cruz, Mikey is probably the best bet at cleanup..Beltre has been struggling, but he makes you pitch to Moreland in the 5 hole...Kins isn't the answer at leadoff, don't think Borbon is either..but give him credit he has been hitting. I don't mind the big shakeup, but do it too often and you'll lose the room. It's good to see Colby rounding into form. Hurry back Nelson and Jham!

SFBL update: I have four pretty salty starters going today, liable to be a huge day for me. Clee leads the way. Still in ninth, but gained 2.5 points yesterday..and still looking forward to a heathy Jham, Utley and Aardsma returning shortly. You guys aren't sweating yet, but you will during the summer.

Its was a nice move by Warsh but the Rangers have about 6 guys in the line up that light up brett anderson regularly, I think the note I saw was they hit .375 against him. Anyhow, I dont think Michael young hitting cleanup would work for more than a few days but right now anything that helps is worth the try

I returned to 1st place with a 5 point gain yesterday, with a hitting line of 9r 4hr 7 rbi 1sb and hit .343. Thats a pretty salty day, some guys dont get that in a week.

Hey, how is my fake fantasy team doing anyway? And don't say we're "short" on talent or I'll hang up and change stations.

My guys hit .368 with 11 RBIs and I lost 2.5 points. Stupid ass league.

Saw that line bro, after I saw 5 points..damn. TRDP1 has Josh Johnson, Lincecum and Pineda go for him last night, 22ip, 22so's..no wins..thought he was going to blow up yesterday too. I have Jimenez, Clee,Burnett and Wolf going for me today...plus my vaunted offense.I want to see a 5 point increase atleast. (everyone will probably get bombed and I'll lose 5)

Well actually they are terrible, its a team of all Rangers. It looked like they were going to gain 5 or 6 points yesterday until rain ruined the real and fake rangers day. Have no fear good 'ole scruffy is keeping your fake team from being in last though

I know there's not a cap, but it was a day when only one starter started. I have 6 starters on my roster and only Zambrano took the hill.

Scruff, not trying to tell you anything..but...I just figured out there is not an innings cap in this league...alll the other leagues I've played in had a 1250 inning limit...so I was waiting for SM to figure that out the hard way...turns out you could have 8 starters going all the time... good luck, and stay hard sir!

Only had one pitcher go and his ERA sucked but the innings were minimal. I must've been passed in the categories I'm not last in, which are few. Annoying that my solid-looking lineup still can't beat the squad of only Rangers.

you must have had a bad day in the other catergories that cost you the points

SM, I ASSumed that the rules were the same as the league I played last year through Yahoo..so I drafted RP's and a few starters..should've read the rules prior to Monday..Wolf got bombed again....sweet.

Hey buddy, when you mentioned my innings getting up there, i checked to see if there was a cap and there wasnt. If there was I would have been highly disappointed as i would have drafted differently. I intentionally only took 9 fielders and did it rather early and rolled with extra pitching figuring that you can only have 63 starts max from fielders in a week, but unlimited starts from pitchers
