Cowboys Organize a Workout, and Guess Who Ain't There?

Tony Romo - Dez Bryant.jpg

Usually about this time of the year, the Cowboys will bring in their new draft class and rookie free agents for a minicamp at Valley Ranch. Workouts for veterans at Valley Ranch would have started back in mid-March.

UPDATE: Now we know why Dez says he was absent Tuesday.

Instead -- in a spring stagnated by the NFL lockout -- the Cowboys yesterday worked out as a team for the first time since the end of the 2010 season. Organizers Tony Romo, Jason Witten and DeMarcus Ware said about 40 players showed up at an undisclosed location in the Metroplex.

"It went great," Romo said. "We had a great turnout. It was crisp. It was fast. You could feel the energy from the guys being back out there. Guys were committed. It was great to see."

With the lockout seemingly in place until June 3 at the very earliest, it's up to players to organize voluntary team workouts or risk being way behind once training camp starts.

For the first time since breaking his collarbone last October against the Giants, Romo threw high-intensity passes to full-speed receivers. One prominent target, however, was missing.

One guess.

Yep, Dez Bryant.

I'm not going to blindly rip him, because maybe he had an excused absence. He went to dinner with Romo a couple weeks back and seems to be heading in the right direction of maturity and responsibility.

Still, it feels a little troubling that Bryant didn't show up to Valley Ranch last Friday when the lockout was temporarily lifted and then again for the team's first organized workout of the 2011 season.

"I truly don't know what happened," his advisor, David Wells, told the Star-Telegram of Bryant missing a face-to-face with owner Jerry Jones last week.

Dez tweets about working out almost daily, but as of now he hasn't been heard from since Monday at 3:41 p.m. when he posted ...

I'm about to get in this kitchen and fry some fish shrimp and fries

He said he had a family function with his 21 year old niece. Story over!

RW, if you want awsome ratings, +10-20 people......Set up a 2-7pm RAGE in game thread, that way we have to listen to you, while we post nut kicking comments.

If the dude is truly on a medicine regimen that is so tight, he has many more problems than worrying about showing up to work. And Richie, a serious question, since you brought him back to radio and got him on the Fan, are you worried that all this time he misses is starting to look bad on you?

Scruffygeist

Richie doesn't really need much help looking bad.

the excuse greggo is using is 100% B.S.

as much B.S. as when he blamed a dr for prescribing him 10 xanax per day for being whacked out on Richard Hunter's show.

also, for someone who was in a "drug-induced" state he was able to clearly hear ALL questions and respond to them (doesnt matter what he said in his reply) thus indicating that his faculties were intact and he was oriented to self.there was no delay in his answers (again, doesnt matter what he said in his reply)

what you heard ppl was a 100% hoax.pretty sad if you ask me.

also very sad that they continue to use "ambien haze" as some sort of funny bit.

How can this station's management let this continue? This tool is either messing up his meds or sick each and every week. How does he get away with it? No one gets sick or messes up their meds that much and if they do then they are more stupid than we all thought the Husky Hasbeen is.

How does he get away with it?

He is arguably the most talented and experienced person at the station. Who knows why this station makes all the stupid decisions they make? Why did they fire Newy when his show had the best ratings?

The Hugger's girlfriend is saying that Greggo took his PM meds in the AM and it is her fault somehow. I didn't listen to the whole exchange between Richie and Greggo's gal.

Sooooo Greggo is 50 something, and he can't get his meds correct by himself? Dooes not compute...hazmat uniform..oink

I hate to do it, but i'm starting to call bullshit on all these excuses by Greggo.

Also bullshit on them getting rid of Newy. There's a reason they call this The Fail.

There are also rumors you missed some of your shifts for hair plugs but you haven't addressed them. You have the forum to do so now, so go for it.

I tend to not believe much of what I read here, but is Greggo missing again? Is RW addressing missing work again?

Greggo missing rage because of a drug overdose? Can we just close the doors on the fail now? Better yet, just to rub it in, can we bring in the "gulties" to start playing their brand of music? Format flip is happening.

Didn't stop you before when Michael Young was excused from spring training because of something. (Which we found out later to be a funeral.)

Welp, between Mishon, Davy and Scruff..I have no thunder.

Saw that tweet from Dez when it went up, and thought to meself..hope he knows he'll need utensils to get the shrimps out of the grease...cause he a dumbass..I remember a former cowboy that burned himself trying to iron a shirt..while it was still on him. (maybe Woodsen?)

Didn't stop him with Colby, either, and we all knew why he was out.

Josh had the nerve to get pneumonia and didn't miss anything important, but that was inexcusable too.

Inside sources are saying that Dez missed the workout because he owes money to all the players. Much like the local dfw jewelers he has no intention of paying them back, its more important to keep it real.

TheRealDirtyP1

I heard from one of my deep throat informants that 40 showed up, found out they weren't getting paid for the workout and left. About 20 ended up playing two below on a 40 yard field.

I haven't confimed this with anyone else but feel free to use my info RW as this blog is just a running editorial and not a news source.

Honestly, Dez was smart to stay away from a "high intensity, full speed" practice. All of those guys would have. They don't have any medical coverage during the lockout...what if someone had ripped up a knee? Additionally, a players organized practice seems like the type of thing that a front office could point to, if a player were injured during it, and try to void a contract since it was not an official team sanctioned activity. Think Aaron Boone shredding his knee playing pickup basketball or whatever it was.

In re: Friday, nobody knew what the crap was going on on Friday. There were reports that the lockout was back on as early as noon that day if I recall.

Lunch with a group including an actor from Gossip Girl in trouble with Plano PD doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence in heading in the right direction.

And am I the only one who thinks that 40 number is totally exaggerated and is much more like 15-20?
