2011 NBA WEST SEMIS GAME 2 -- Mavs 93, Lakers 81: My Top 10 Observer-ations

Dirk - Lakers.jpg
10. For the Mavs, a shocking 2-0 lead. For the Lakers, a Stinko de Mayo. L.A. missed its first 15 3-pointers and was booed off the court in Staples Center. As they head for Dallas and Friday night's Game 3, the Lakers are muttering things like "dispirited" and "trust issues." Surreal.

9. History suggests it's a tad early to jostle former mayor Laura Miller out of her slumber and to dust off those old boxes of unused confetti from 2006, but nonetheless the Mavs' plane arrives from L.A. this afternoon at 3 at Love Field. The Lemmon Ave. side on Coker Street. If you go please encourage. Don't congratulate.

8. In a hideous game with a gorgeous result, we saw Dirk Nowitzki throw an assist that skimmed off the rim and Kobe Bryant flail a pass that caromed off the backboard out of bounds.

7. For the series, Kobe Bryant has taken 49 shots. All but one -- last night's blown layup -- have been jumpers. He's gotten his points, but that's called defense.

6. Didn't think J.J. Barea could morph into Chris Paul against the Lakers, but he continually got into the lane in the fourth quarter off Dallas' pet high pick-and-roll. With L.A.'s bigs concerned -- and rightly so -- with Dirk Nowitzki, they didn't hedge on Barea and the Puerto Rican point guard caused havoc with fearless, productive drives.

5. Are we upon that magical crossroads where "hope" becomes "belief"? Man, I love that junction. Could we be so fortunate, in the span of seven months, to be treated to Rangers over Yankees, America over Osama Bin Laden and Mavericks over Lakers? What's next, medicine over cancer and Cowboys over Steelers in XLVI next February?

4. Not surprised by Ron Artest's late-game clothesline of Barea. Punk move, by a noted punk. He should be suspended. Troubling, however, was Shawn Marion's lack of reaction to the thuggery. Marion was five feet from Barea when he got clubbed, but upon seeing his teammate cold-cocked he simply turned away and retrieved the wayward bouncing basketball. What the what?! I don't want Marion to retaliate to the point of starting a brawl and getting ejected, but at least get in Artest's face to have your teammate's back. Right? At the very least, make sure Barea isn't decapitated.

3. As you're well aware I'm a pretty jaded dude. Hard to get me genuinely excited at this point after covering games for 26 years. But when Dirk drilled his one-legged "and 1" over Pau Gasol -- the "Flamingo Fadeaway," I'm dubbing it from here on out -- for a 14-point lead with 2:50 left I jumped up with a fist pump. I then politely asked to be pinched.

2. In the wake of L.A.'s ugly performance, TNT's Charles Barkley continually cleared his throat, warned that the fat lady was warming up and claimed "the Lakers are done. The Mavericks got a better team." I'm not proclaiming it over. But if the Lakers don't play better...it's over. That just can't be all the two-time defending champs got, can it?

1. Lots of folks are yelling "Toldja!" toward me and my Lakers-in-five prognostication this morning. If you truly thought or predicted the Mavs would win Games 1 and 2, then take a bow. You're smarter than a stripper, a fifth-grader and Nowitzki. Admits Dirk, "If you would have told me before that we were going to win both games, it would have been hard to believe."

Who are these guys and what have they done with the Mavericks?

Artest + Barea = Hate Crime

Yes the times of these West Coast games sucks The Large One, but its easily remedied by setting an alarm for 11:45-11:50 PM and waking up in time to watch the last 10 minutes or so. If you see nothing else but the last 10 minutes of a basketball game, you will have seen just about everything worth seeing anyway.

I would normally take this opportunity to bash RW on yet another failed prediction...but I am too happy about the Mavs to care right now!

These late starts are the worst! I get up at an ungodly hour so I have only been able to watch the first half of these last 2 games. It is nice though... to wake up and find out they pulled it out.

I listened to that ridiculous morning show on the Fan during one of The Musers breaks this morning, and apparently that Shariff guy is a huge Lakers fan. So the dude likes the Lakers and the Redskins and I'm not sure who he likes in baseball, but I bet its the Yankees or Orioles. I find it a little irritating that he isn't a fan of any of our teams. Could they really not have found anybody else that is more local? Atleast with Richie, you know he is rooting for the same thing as you are. I just find it a little annoying.

I call it 14 years in the league and a ton of playoff games under his belt. Jason Kidd doesn't attack the rim like he once did either. Jordan became a jump shooter too as did many other veteran players.

And if I remember correctly Kobe made a driving jump hook in game 1. You can look it up not me.

I won't lie, no way did I expect them to win 2 out there. Monday's game had some luck involved, last night had the Mavs going out and just plain winning it. They played extremely well, threw down some defense I didn't know they had, and guys like Haywood and JJ were excellent. I wish Stevenson hadn't gotten so trigger happy and Terry wasn't shooting so poorly, but he still got some assists and made things happen.

Question for anyone who's not a Mavs fan (DirtyP1, perhaps)--how annoying is Dirk to an opponent? As annoying as Kobe in his ability to hit some ridiculous shot? I think we take Dirk for granted and expect him to drain some one-legged fadeaway 18 footer with a dude stuck to him and we forget how special that talent is.

Where's Greggo? Ambien...good one?

I had the Mavs as follows in this series. 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2

They are better than I thought they were, so I guess I was wrong too.....about how good they really are. I'm a realist after all.

I sure didn't see this coming, but I'm pleasantly surprised! Barkley has been on the Mavs bandwagon all year. Anybody else ready to climb aboard? GO MAVS! P.S. Even Bennett Salvatore couldn't help the brick chunking Lakeshow!

oops- the lack of reaction was covered in the post below mine.

The reason Marion didn't react was explained by Kidd in his interview- they had talked in the huddle that something stupid might happen (and I'll bet they talked Artest specifically), and were prepared for it. I think they handled it perfectly. There is no need to take the bait for a possible fight when everything is going your way.

I said they were going to win both games, LOOK IT UP, as Greggo would say. RW said Lakeshow in 5, and I'm picking the exact opposite. Loving Barkley's newfound love/respect of Dirk, and as I stated a few days ago...Dirk isn't running the same pet play anymore, it seems he's moved away from the elbow about 4 foot towards the side..and he's in a triple threat position. I'm digging it very much..love the drive/backdown/pop superplay! RW, keep effing that chicken sir, and kids..don't jar! (delirious from lack of sleep the last three days...and the SFBL team has made yet another trade, imagine that.)

I never thought the Mavs would take 2, much less 2 in a row in LA but I said Mavs in 6 adn I hope Im still right. I wont say toldja so, I dont think anyone saw THIS coming. I dig the Flamingo Fadeawy. Artest is the biggest clown in the league. I thought chandler was gonaa launch the ball at him when he took his first technical, but even dirk said in the final timeout that they knew he was going to goon it up and to not react. Im almost sad that Artest will be suspended, that might actually make the Lakeshow better w/o out him jacking up 3's and getting shot over by Dirk. Please tell Greggo that im not bashing you, I think he has me confused with others on this here sportatorium

I tried listening this morning too, and the only one worth a shit was Jasmine.

to add to your point:

rj choppy is a fan of all things NY/NJ. He openly rooted for the Yankees last fall while he was on the air @ espn. he said on air that the yankees would STILL win the series despite being down 3-1.he also calls Tennessee the "real" UT.

so chew on those nuggets, fans of sports teams in texas.

no wonder the Fail's promos of being a sports station for the "Texas fans" disappeared

I've always respected Dirk, that fallaway is unstoppable. You can't block it unless you're to the side or behind him but the Mavs spacing keeps you from doing that. The Spurs have never concentrated on stopping him, let him get his 35 and keep Terry or someone else from scoring. It's always going to be up to someone else to help out. What I like seeing from Dirk, albeit I only watched the first half, is his rebounding. He's flying in, grabbing rebounds. Shocks me he doesn't attack the basket more, but whatever he's comfortable with.

the dude is a pill-popping hasbeen.

when he ODs there will be enough evidence to indict those who are enabling his actions (assuming there is anyone who would want to press charges).

Yeah if Marion had reacted and gotten a technical or worse, ejected, RW would've been writing about how he has to keep his cool in that situation and not react to provocation.

Dummie? he's being realistic. Who wouldn't want to go 4. I wince at the quickhitters that come in here on hit and run missions.

Well I hope im still right in the sense that the mavs win the series. Trust, me Id rather them win in 4 or 5, but that Lakeshow is not going to roll over, or are they?
