Whitt's End: 4.29.11

Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:
*Most surprising thing about Cowboys first-round draft pick Tyron Smith? According to scout Walter Juliff, he's related to a former Cowboy with the same last name. Goes by the name "Emmitt." Cool.
*Also, how's this for bravado from a 20-year-old who's played 24 games of college football: "I think I have the potential to be a Pro Bowl player," Smith said last night, "and a Hall of Famer."
*With two lips on last night's NFL Draft but one eye on Mavs-Blazers, I figured the early 33-19 Portland lead was Dallas getting ready for Game 7. Shocking, impressive comeback and 103-96 win. As if advancing past the first round weren't enough, winning consecutive games in the wake of the Game 4 collapse signals a different Mavs mindset.
*As previously stated, I don't think the Mavs can beat the Lakers, especially considering Game 1 is Monday night at 9:30 in Staples Center. I'd like my chances a lot more if Game 1 -- and a potential Game 7 -- were at AAC. Damn you Kobe. Anybody else remember his overtime-forcing 3-pointer in the last game of the NBA's regular season? Also -- again -- screw you, San Antonio.
*So there's a big group of us in a suite watching Charlie Sheen last Wednesday night at AAC and I got the bright idea to splurge. Case of beer. Bottle of Captain Morgan. Twelve Diet Cokes. Wings. Hot dogs. Sandwiches. Talk about sticker shock, the bill was ...
*If you're scoring at home -- and I know you are -- I get a win for predicting Tyron Smith, a loss for predicting a Mavs Game 6 defeat but also a win for predicting a Mavs series triumph. Meat Loaf would be proud.
*Hot.
*Not.
*For all the Mavs' fascination and obsession with beating the Lakers, the teams haven't met in the playoffs in 23 years. It was 1988 when the Mavs -- led by Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Roy Tarpley -- pushed the eventual champs to a Game 7 at The Forum. Bad result, but good times.
*Sad to see Newy Scruggs leave 105.3 The Fan. He was my first full-time radio partner and I learned so much from him during our 9-month on-air marriage. His last show is this morning 9-11. Knowing Newy, there won't be any Mike Snyder-Jane McGarry "I love you" good-byes. Starting Monday New School with Shan and RJ will expand 5:30-10 and Josh 'n Elf will go 10 a.m.-2 p.m., leading into yours truly with Greggo.
*If you're a fan of UFC, you're a fan of The Fan. In the last week we've had on Jon "Bones" Jones and Georges St. Pierre and tomorrow night Richard Hunter will host a UFC 129 pre-game show 7-8.
*Good Perfect time for the draft and the Mavs to bury your Rangers, because things aren't good. Another bullpen oops by yesterday Darren Oliver -- aided by neutered hitting and a rare Adrian Beltre fielding gaffe -- and all the sudden Texas has lost four of its last five series.
*By the way, happy birthday to you. Sorta. On Sunday this lil' corner of the blogosphere turns 3. Seems like just yesterday we were just learning to crawl.
*Smith is a good pick and all, but the Cowboys still have holes to address in today's second round and third rounds. Namely, safety. But when Jerry Jones said late last night that Dallas tried to move into the first round to grab a player, the target was Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan.
