Someone Explain to Me What I'm Missing in Mark Lowe

Categories: Texas Rangers

Mark Lowe - UTA.jpg
I know, technically, he's all the Texas Rangers have to show for the Cliff Lee trade -- assuming the $2 million in cash has long since been spent -- but what the what am I supposed to be seeing in reliever Mark Lowe?

Because I think know I see a guy who gets behind the count, throws 97 mph fastballs -- sans movement -- right down the middle and consistently gives up hits and runs. The Rangers led 2-0 in the 6th yesterday in Detroit when Lowe entered the game.

He immediately allowed about 800 feet of wall-banging doubles to the first two hitters and then a run-scoring single in coughing up a lead the Rangers had just taken in the top of the inning. Later, for the second consecutive day, the Rangers lost via walk-off hit in the ninth.

This, of course, is nothing new with Lowe.

Lee helped pitch the Rangers to the World Series, and you can't put a value on his contribution to the longest, best season in franchise history. But with him now in Philly the trade is first baseman Justin Smoak (Seattle's starting first baseman), pitcher Blake Beavan (1-0 with a 0.90 ERA at AAA), pitcher Josh Lueke (who got his first Major League victory Monday night) and infielder Matthew Lawson (traded to the Cleveland Indians in spring training) for...Lowe?

Yuckspitvomit.

I want to like Lowe. He's 6-foot-3 with a live arm, and he went to my alma mater, UT-Arlington. But this is what we've received with him on the Rangers' mound:

In the 2010 regular season he made three appearances with an ERA of 12.00.

In the 2010 World Series he made two appearances, recorded two outs and allowed five earned runs for an ERA -- this has gotta be a record, right? -- of 67.50.

In 2011 he's appeared in four games with an ERA of 13.50.

I was underwhelmed by Lowe last October. I was worried about him last month at spring training (check out No. 9). But now, I'm just done.

Lowe: Let's Build Something Together. Namely, a rally.

Richie, for Christ's sake. What is this? Are you just trying to stir up the crap? Or do you really believe this drivel?

The trade was Smoak et al for Lee. Lowe was a throw-in. Lee is gone now, but that doesn't rewrite the trade. You may be only person on the planet who thinks the Rangers made a bad deal.

I don't know about you, but I know I said it last July. "If the Rangers make the World Series, this is a great deal, even if Lee walks." I stand by that. It was a great deal. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

You're right! And boy, look at the deal the Stars made 15 years ago for Joe Niewendyk! Sure, they made the deal, and Niewendyk was a crucial piece of that team and eventually helped win the team a Stanley Cup and bring them back to the finals to defend their Cup the next year, but just look at what that deal has added up to now. Calgary has Jarome Iginla, one of the league's top superstars, and what do the Stars have? Nothing!

Clearly, the Niewendyk trade was a massive mistake, despite the fact that it got the team to 2 Stanley Cup finals and won them the Cup once!

Or, you could look at this like a rational human being and understand that just because pieces of the trade have moved on, the success of the team that was spurred from the trade is still a part of the deal.

Lowe was just a throw-in on the Lee deal, and just because Cliff Lee left doesn't mean that the trade was Smoak/Beavan/Leuke/Lawson for Lowe.

The real question is how many segments are they going to beat this into the ground on RAGE today?...

I sure hope they talk about whether or not the Josh Hamilton play was a bad idea. They certainly didn't beat that dead horse for TWO days.

I can't blame Lowe completely, it's not his fault Ron and Mike keep sending him out there to cough up games.

Richie? It seems as though this blog is going back to what it used to be before you found me. The last line of the post isn't even funny. I bet you smiled that douche smile and looked for somebody to high five after you wrote that. Mike Goat is funnier than you and all he knows how to say is "bah.."

Please find me soon, Richie Whitt. It's obvious I'm needed around here.

RW, I think you really need a lesson in how to tag. Why was Mike Maddux tagged in this post?

Lowe needs to be working the night shift at wAWffle house instead of serving up his fat taters against AL lineups.

No, you're wrong.

The trade is first baseman Justin Smoak (Seattle's starting first baseman), pitcher Blake Beavan (1-0 with a 0.90 ERA at AAA), pitcher Josh Lueke (who got his first Major League victory Monday night) and infielder Matthew Lawson (traded to the Cleveland Indians in spring training) for...

...Lowe, an AL Championship banner, and a trip to the World Series.

Seeing as this team absolutely blew for 40 years, there's no Ranger fan on the planet with a true sense of this team's history that wouldn't have made that trade in a heartbeat.

I honestly never expected the Rangers to make the World Series in my lifetime.

Only Captain "Create Some False Controversy" can downplay the significance of an AL Championship....

The bullpen's problem is Mason Tobin. Remember?

FYI, Oliver got the loss. Didn't see him in this post, like just an endnote that you usually do like "and oh, by the way, Oliver gave up a walk off homerun". Thanks for continuing to meet our expectations.

You are missing something, He SUCKS. He's alot like Sybil and Armin, when Rage picks up a few listeners during a broadcast and is on its way to a good finish for the day. Then you go to the bullpen. Up first is Armin, you walk the bases loaded and give up a grandslam. The same thing happens with Sybil and you lose the game(all your listeners). Does that make it easier to understand?

We also landed two extra draft picks by virtue of Lee signing in Philly.

Exactly - RW wouldn't shut up about "this kid hasn't even pitched outside A-ball" and he's been a solid addition to the bullpen. Mark Lowe stank out loud in his few appearances last year, and he hasn't fixed anything - DFA him and try another hand, because I've seen pitching machines that get more movement on the ball than he does.

Like I told trdp1, we're both sucky..don't know why it would get vetoed..Pujols slump is over once he suits up for me..the other guys coming my way are expendable..but I've made him 400 offers and he finally put one back at me. I am betting on the upside. Hell, I'm 7 or 8 now anyhow..pretty much gotta go up from here.
