In Case You Forgot: DeMarcus Ware is One of the Good 'Boys

As l've learned throughout seasons of covering him at Valley Ranch and last year hosting his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan, Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware is a good great player but an even better dude.

That fact was reiterated this week when Ware confirmed that he will decline $60,000 in lockout payments from the NFL Players Association.

Because he was on the active roster every week of the '09 and '10 seasons, Ware and players like him are eligible to receive $60,000 over a six-week period during the lockout.

"I think it builds a unity," Ware said yesterday. "Lets guys know there are players out there with you, who will give up their $60,000, that this is a brotherhood, this is a fraternity."

I know, it's easy to turn down $60,000 when you've got a $79 million contract that guarantees you $40 million.

But what Ware did during a stop at an Irving elementary school solidified his status.

Ware made a $5,000 donation to Farine Elementary School to help with the medical bills of first-grader Misael Rico, who was hit by a car in January.

"I just thought, 'You're a blessed guy and you have enough money, so let's help out,'" Ware said. "It just kind of came over me because I wanted to help the cause."

I know you can do with your money what you want, but if Dez Bryant wants to patch up his public image he'd put down the jewelry and pay a visit to Rico ASAP.

he was open and approachable at The Lodge and he was generous with the dancers too.

Yep, that is called instant leeway room for future mistakes. As if there were a bank account of indulgences that could be drawn upon at some ill-timed future f-up. Yet, I doubt he has any inkling that could even be a consideration. He did it because he's one of the good guys of this universe. He probably won't ever have to tap into that stash of goodwill he is building.

Ridiculous as it sounds, Ware is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. Yeah, I said UNDERrated.

If Dez Bryant wants to patch up his image he should start by paying his bills.

Regardless of what a millionaire does with $60k....

I met the guy by a pool in Las Vegas once. He's a class act.

I know these are tough times for NFL players. Do I applaud him for turning down what most Americans don't even make in a year? Nope. It's just going to another NFL player that makes more than most Americans. If you want to make a statement, donate that 60k to a school district to pay for 1 teacher. That 1 teacher will impact more kids positively than it will a player that has probably mismanaged their money and will be working at Home Depot in 5 years.

Ware made a good move by donating the $5,000 to help with the medical bills, but I don't think turning down $60,000 is that big of a deal. You said it...the dude makes 79 million. He wipes his ass with $60,000. I hate that this got out in the news anyway, I like when good deeds happen and it goes unannounced.

I bet he didn't roll up in a Bentley with 10 pounds of custom jewelry either. And won't get into a police chase.
