Crafty Mavericks Lose Again, on Verge of Avoiding Lakers in NBA Playoffs

A playoff preview?
Remember waaaay back when the Mavericks were salivating over somehow catching the Spurs for the best record in the NBA's Western Conference and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs? Don't look now, but after last night's home loss, the goal is to somehow hold onto third place.

Or is it?

A four-game losing streak and an 8-9 record in their last 17 games has Dallas sliding toward the No. 4 seed. With four games remaining the Mavs have only a one-game lead on fourth-place Oklahoma City. And the Thunder hold the tiebreaker edge by virtue of being the Northwest Division champions.

Dallas' last four: Clippers on Friday, Suns Sunday, Rockets Monday, Hornets Wednesday.

Thunder's last four: Nuggets on Friday, at Lakers Sunday, at Kings Monday, Bucks Wednesday

Lethargic play, a losing streak and a slide in the standings sounds ominous this time of year. But as we all know, the playoffs are all about matchups, and No. 4 might not be so bad after all.

Why?

Because at No. 4 the Mavs would play the Denver Nuggets in the first round. Given that they've lost two straight to Denver and their last nine in a row to Western Conference playoff opponents, I know an opening-round victory is anything but guaranteed.

But if the Mavs survive, they would face the top-seeded Spurs in the West semis instead of the Lakers. Yeah, the Spurs clinched the top seed last night and are 60-19; the Lakers have suddenly lost consecutive games to the crappy Jazz and Warriors.

But seriously, who would you rather play: Spurs or Lakers? That's what I thought.

Of course, if the Mavs play like they did last night, none of it will matter. With center Tyson Chandler resting his sore tailbone and with Jason Kidd sitting out just to get some extra rest, the Mavs fell in a 16-point hole, rallied to tie it with three minutes left and then watched Denver score nine straight.

Most troubling were the actions of a couple veterans. Shawn Marion got yanked from the game after failing to hustle back on defense after his ugly air ball in the fourth quarter. And in the final minute, Jason Terry lost his cool and got his technical. Yes, again.

Said coach Rick Carlisle afterward: "We're pros here. We don't have a bunch of rookies running around out there. So we can't be doing that stuff. Simple as that. After the fact, I think our guys realized that, but in the heat of the moment we've got to be better. ... I don't give a crap about a missed shot, but when anybody on our team is not running back, that's a problem."

The Mavs have a week to get this straightened out. Otherwise it won't matter who they play.

This was the very first segment of the show. Such an asswhip to read something, then hear it regurgitated a couple of hours later.

How many times a show does RW say "Greggo"? I counted 5 times in the first ten minutes.

Not for me. Not. For. Me.

If you hate it so much then why do you listen so much? You and DirtyP1 are always bashing RAGE but you two seem to know more about it then anybody.

I don't hate it and I've admitted that I listen. Some of it is tongue in cheek. The "Not for me" was sarcasm. That being said, it is an asswhip when the first segment is the exact same thing as the first post of the day - and yes, I realize that there is going to be overlap each day. I'm also curious as to why RW has to say "Greggo" every time that it's his turn to talk when they're trading HSO's (it's not a big deal, it's just peculiar).

The Nuggets have been on fire since getting rid of that blackhole Carmelo Anthony. Thr Mavs don't have the toughness to deal with KMart, Birdman, and JR Smith -- all of which are known thugs. They don't have the guards to cover Lawson and Felton.

Mavs are going down like me on a black stud at Lake Cliff.

"The Mavs have a week to get this straightened out. Otherwise it won't matter who they play."

You could have written just that and it would have been enough. The chemistry that the Rangers exhibit is starkly absent from the Mavs. I am not saying the Mavs don't get along or don't like each other, but whatever they are cooking over there is just not working. I fully expect another first round bow-out and see ya again next...well, we will see ya when David Stern says we can play again.

I know it's usually not a great idea to tank to get a lower seed and the Mavs will never admitt doing it...but I hope they are! I would much rather see them play the spurs than the lakers in the second round...if they get to the second round.

I too have had enough of jason terry...his act is as tired as Robo Greggo. Just Kidding RW. I think I may be one of the few who still thinks it's pretty funny, but how does one person lose their voice so much?

You're a brave man blogging about the mavs in a non-positive light. MCuban will have his minions keeping a close eye on you.Ok, so you really want to play the Nuggets in the first round? And then you WANT to play the Spurs? The Mavs aren't tanking it for playoff positioning. They're just not playing well right now.

Like I said in a comment last week(invoking RW logic of a winning comment), 1-4 are slumping and 5-8 are are on the uptick(-2/+1). The first round isn't going to be a joke, there are no gimmes top to bottom. If I'm the Mavs, I'm hoping I stay at 3 and the Hornets stay at 6. You might be able to get out of that one early and get some rest. Portland is going to take LA 6 games(LA wins), Okc/Den will go 7(toss up), Spurs in 5, Mavs in 5. I just don't see any of the top 3 wanting any piece of the young teams right now.

p.s. RW, if you don't have someone to proofread and fact-check your postings, hit me up, I'll do it for free, friend. ("the Lakers have suddenly lose consecutive games") * not only have they lost but that makes 3 in a row(consecutive+1)

The last time the Mavs tried to massage their matchup....they got bounced by Golden State as the 1 seed. They better not be trying that crap again. Not good hoops karma.

They looked like garbage last night. And Jason Terry--on behalf of all Mavs fans: Stifle it. Do your job and make a shot, keep your mouth shut, and stop trying to be the league's smallest thug. I'm getting to where I want him out of here as much as I wanted to see Howard gone, or to hear something decent in evening drive on The Fail.
