UConn 53, Butler 41: My Top 10 Observer-ations

Categories: March Madness

UConn.jpg
10. March Badness: Butler shot 18.8 percent, lowest ever in a National Championship game. Eighteen percent. That's 12 of 64, including an unfathomable 3 of 31 on two-pointers.

9. I for one am happy. Butler's will-over-skill routine might have been efficient, but it isn't a tad entertaining. And, yes, I'm still bitter that they "beat" Pittsburgh in the second round when the Panthers missed a potential game-winning free throw with 1.1 remaining.

8. Give credit to CBS' panel of analysts, none of whom was afraid to pan a horribly played game. Greg Anderson: "Let's be honest, that's the worst college championship game I've ever seen." Seth Davis: "It's a bad showcase for college basketball. Charles Barkley: "Awful." And Clark Kellogg: "Unparalleled ineptitude."

7. Butler missed 19 of its first 20 two-point shots. And led by one. Swear. After hearing his partner Steve Kerr compare the woeful offense to watching paint dry, CBS' Jim Nantz zinged, "That's unfair to paint."

6. UConn's Kemba Walker is a nice player. His lack of size and limited shooting range is a perfect fit for the NBA Developmental League.

5. UConn coach Jim Calhoun, at 68, is the oldest coach to win a National Championship. He's also one of the sleeziest. What does it say about a sport when its crowned coach will next year serve a suspension for "creating and fostering an environment of non-compliance."

4. CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson is a horrible interviewer. But, hey, she's cute. (I had to make one positive comment, didn't I?)

3. Last night's game concluded the worst Final Four I can recall. Not a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the bunch, two 9-plus loss teams in the final and only player -- Walker -- on the top three All-American teams. No stars. No memorable -- much less transcendant -- teams. I love college hoops, but good riddance.

2. Is there anyone in sports that oozes scripted sappiness more than Nantz? After last night's "dog fight" between the Huskies and Bulldogs, he exclaimed that Connecticut was "best in show!"

1. I know America loves an underdog, but can we please be done with Butler? In two championship games they've scored 100 points. Combined. That's 41 Monday night and 59 in last year's loss to Duke. Enough already.

Yep, awful. I still wouldn't trade the tournament for the BCS formulas. What if Coach Kid Wonder was at FLA or some other name and the game was just as bad? Would that make you feel better about it RW?

Agree with Davy...Combining Butler's points for the last 2 years and not mentioning that they only lost to Duke by 2 last year is irresponsible. Do you really think we are all too stupid to recognize that?

9. You put beat in quotations. Why? Butler did beat them. Otherwise Butler wouldn't have been playing last night.

1. If America loves an underdog, the nation must be pulling for RAGE to succeed. But, based on what I read/hear, they're not. Also, don't try to cover up that Butler almost beat Duke last year. Doing the "combined points over the last two games" is a cop out.

Jason Terry says Butler shot well. Stolen from Twitter, a Sturm retweet, I believe.

And how dare Butler not play all that well in their two unexpected championship games! The bastards! Here, let me edit your last "point" because you've reverted to being a jackass:

"I know America loves an underdog but can we please be done with RAGE? In two time slots they've been slaughtered. That's 1.5 in January and 1.3 in February. Enough already."

Humor us with a management-forced second olive branch.

I would have enjoyed a preview yesterday, I mean it was the championship game that happens once a year in a major college sport. Sorry to ask for much, but it's easy to criticize when you didn't blog on it yesterday and I miss most of your show. I could care less about what the Stars are putting out there right now.

Now that I'm done busting your balls, I almost forgot the game was even on last night. I was tuned into the Rangers. I heard someone on the radio say that the best team doesn't win the tournament, which I can understand, but that's the way it goes. The best football team doesn't always play in the National Championship. Let's stop dumbing things out. This year was an anamoly, I just can't see another 3 vs. 11 game in the near future, but I'll probably be wrong. I'm glad that I grew up when the tournament was actually good, before players could leave early for the NBA. Now you don't really know anyone, there's no continuity, and the best player on the floor last night, well I'll never even see him in the NBA(maybe in Frisco??? I hear they have a NBADL team there).Very meh last night.

When is Iguodala coming? He will definitely save the Mavs. Outside of that, Rw is a big Mavs homer. He's not a lockerroom reporter perse, so that blog was a shot across the bow at a lot of people.Cuban does come off as pissy in this posting. In his perfect world, we would only read what he wanted us to read about the Mavs. I like a little opinion in the world.

If RW is ripping the readers of the Dallas Observer on his show, it won't be long until we get another DO mandated olive branch. That is if anybody from the DO listens to The Fan.

They get me to listen to about 5 minutes every 2nd or 3rd day, during a Hardline break when Galloway is being arrogant or boring. And I don't stick around for ads. In RW's rationalization world I'm contributing to amazing individual listener numbers, but I'm only there long enough to reconfirm the show hasn't improved. I'll take Corby's polished arrogance to Richie's douchewad, Domino-wannabe blowhard overtrying any day.

too much Armen. Danny stayed in the background and earned his airtime. I can listen to RW and Greggo, I punch out when there's a segment containing more than 2 seconds of Armen or Sybil(don't tell RW, that will hurt his feelings and the last thing he'd do is tell them to stay off the air)
