Chuck Greenberg and Texas Rangers co-chair Bob Simpson celebrate after outbidding Mark Cuban in an auction to own the club
Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's Merten's End:

*Well, that was quick. Chuck Greenberg formed the current Rangers ownership group, and less than seven months after the sale was complete, he's out. No longer managing partner. No longer chief executive officer. No longer a co-owner. Gone for good.

My well-placed source says Greenberg tried to be Jerry Jones -- in charge of everything -- and obviously that didn't play well with Nolan Ryan, who told the board if Greenberg didn't go, he'd bolt instead. Greenberg, who's supposedly receiving a nice severance check, balked at answering questions about players or contracts when I interviewed him at length back in November. He deferred to Ryan and Jon Daniels. Apparently, though, that's not what he was doing behind the scenes.

Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram offers his take about what happened. Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says Greenberg pissed off Ryan.

*Even though he'll miss the beginning of the season with a broken rib suffered during a basketball game, former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke would have been a great addition to the Rangers. But now that we know what it would have taken to nab him from the Royals, I'm glad Daniels didn't pull the trigger. According to Heyman, Kansas City asked for Derek Holland, Tommy Hunter, Michael Kirkman, Jurickson Profar and Engle Beltre.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Perhaps it would be worth considering with Holland pulled out of the deal, but even then it would be a tough decision.

*Yahoo's Jeff Passan and CBS Sportsline's Scott Miller think Neftali Feliz is headed into the Rangers rotation. While I would love for Feliz to step in and pitch like a frontline starter, I'm still not sure now is the right time, and I predict the Rangers will ultimately agree.

*Hot

*Not

*Losing 4-3 to the Calgary Flames Wednesday night was actually one of the best games of the season for the Dallas Stars. Down 3-0 less than 14 minutes into the contest, the Stars battled back to earn a point after losing the shootout. Match-ups at home tonight against the Minnesota Wild (puck drops at 7:30 p.m.) and Sunday against the Los Angeles Kings are hardly must wins, but if the club wants to solidify its place among playoff contenders, you gotta beat the teams you're supposed to beat. And with Brad Richards back in the lineup, there' s no reason why they shouldn't.

*Rick Carlisle should call his team soft more often, as the Dallas Mavericks easily dismissed the New York Knicks last night, 127-109. A win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday might be enough to convince me that the Mavs are on the verge of reestablishing themselves as the best team in the league.

*While watching a spring training game late last night, one of the announcers repeatedly used the term "RBIs." Maybe it's the journalist in me, but this drives me insane every time I hear it. RBI is already plural. The only thing that bothers me more is when people say, "I'm a Ranger fan," or "I'm going to the Ranger game tonight." No, you're not. You're a Rangers fan or headed to the Rangers game. C'mon, people. It's not that hard.

*In high school baseball news, Lake Highlands clobbered W.W. Samuell to the tune of 54-0 in just five innings. Samuell managed no hits, and Lake Highlands had just six extra-base hits because the coach told his players to stop at first no matter how far the ball went. Worst. Ass-kicking. Ever.

*The Dallas Cowboys are apparently interested in free agent free safety Michael Huff. If Jerry can only lure Huff's favorite stripper to town. Twenty-five grand on lap dances? Wonder what he pays for a lady of the night.

*Some high school kid jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge just for fun and somehow survived. He fell 220 feet and only suffered a bruised tailbone and torn lung. Is it me, or are the younglings becoming dumber by the year? More evidence of idocracy? Two kids tweeted about it after it happened.

*Thanks to this piece in The New York Times, we learn that President Barack Obama has told folks it would be so much easier being president of China. Yeah, that whole communism thingie they've got going on over there makes the gig pretty simple. You command. People obey.

*Not once have I seen an episode of Two and a Half Men. That is, until I stumbled on a repeat last night and watched only because I now want to know what the fuss is about. After two minutes, I changed the channel, yet I've been glued to Sheen's unraveling in the media. Who are you people who like that show? Seriously. I want to know.

*Finally, I feel compelled to apologize for this week's coverage. One post a day doesn't cut it. But, as I mentioned earlier, filling in for Richie was news to me. Find me tomorrow on Lower Greenville, and I'll buy you a beer. I'll be the one passed out in the sea of green.

I liked Greenberg and I will miss his happy face around the ballpark. I guess it's back to dullsville with Nolan. Did you see the press conference? 3 old, fuddy, duddy grandpas with not once ounce of fun between them. These are the same folks who whine and moan when football players celebrate. Uggggggggggggg

Thanks Mertie Claus......welcome back Mr. Whitt. Slow news week. Not too many baseball questions, or concerns. Mav's=good for 50+, and first round out. Stars=meh. Cowboys=what am I going to do if the lockout does indeed happen? Best time of the year!________

On a side note:Hey ya'll, please consider listening to the greatness of the Byrds Mr. Tambourine Man (album), with R.M.'s genius raga leads, Chris Hillmans plodding base, Crosby's harmonies, and that furious drumming.......a folk rock masterpeice.

ps-tomorrow we explore shells stuffed with ricotta and chili w/a red vodka sauce. goes good with:

I realize this is going to get me in trouble, but I think Chloe Marshall is a pretty girl. Yeah, she could lose a couple pounds. Or fifteen. She's still a good-looking girl though.

Greenburg's exit - I wonder if now the Rangers will drop the silly requirement where in order to get tickets to opening day or the Yankees, you have to either buy a 10 game package, or go into the lottery. A guy I work with has taken his Mom to opening day for the last 30 years. It's a family tradition for them. They have to sit out this year. Sad.

Greinke - Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make...

Stupid youth - For thousands of years, middle aged men have thought teenagers were idiots, and much dumber than they used to be. It's a right of passage into old age.

Two and a Half Men - I've watched the show. It's funny and irreverent, or maybe funny because it's irreverent. Not every sitcom has to be thought provoking to be good. Mindless humor has its place, too.

While I did miss the 3 posts a day, It still took me longer to read 1 merten post than 3 whitt posts. either way, I want them both posting sports, Richie makes me laugh and merten makes me think, its a good combo platter.

-I'm bummed about Greenberg. I like the promotion side of him, very down to earth. Nolan, not so much, but that's what I want out of Nolan. -Good job on the hot and not. -If you can get Michael Huff, sign him now. He would automatically be better than any safety since Darren Woodson. Yes, I know Roy Williams played here, but he was exposed when they pulled him out of the box. -Thanks for the apology Mert. Like RW says, don't be a stranger.

Fourth, b!tches!

This weekend it's Lake Cliff. Onions, bell peppers, sauteed mushrooms, grated cheese, and heat it up, but don't burn it. Put it over a nice big, dark meat sausage at the lake, and take it all in. Enjoy the secret sauce too.

After that, my nice gloves and nice suit, and see if I can keep the wedding cake cream out of my beard. Don't want to look facialized, lol.

More Neftali! Less Greenberg! Baseball allyear. Other sports are just for gays and douches and nonwhites.

Why did you watch Three and a Half Men? I doubt it's as good as Charle Sheen's show Two and a Half Men.

It's Two and a Half Men, Sam, but you're about 13 inaccuracies below Richie for the post, so it's all good. And I for one appreciate your work this week.

Even if you get to keep Holland, no way would I do that deal for Greinke. You'd have to take out Beltre or Profar too--KC couldn't get both.

Well, I guess Jerry doesn't see any reason to bring in smart players via free agency or the draft. Status quo, be ready for some disappointment on the field because supposedly good athletes can't use their noggins.

What, no radio ratings or religious or political quip? Where's the blatant comment-whoring, Sam? And what strip club can we come hang with you at over the weekend?

This just in: The lil Mavs can't handle the Lakeshow without Kobe, or the Hornets without CP3..and the chick on the Mavs postgame looks alot hotter since she got knocked up.

When a Ranger player hits for a ton of RBIs, he may need to visit the ATM and takeout some cash to celebrate.

RE: Tickets, im told by someone in ticket office, that that was the only way the Rangers felt they could fairly do opening day tickets was to make them a part of season tickets only so the most dedicated (editorial by me: with the most $$$)fans would get opening day. Yeah it sucks, but that how free markets work!

yeah, that package of players is crazy talk. The Brewers gaveup a fair package and weren't milked like this. Minus Holland or Profar maybe fair and can't blame the Rangers for passing.

I certainly don't think she's hotter than the "hot" girl. But she's 5'10", and has a DD chest. If she dropped from 176 to 150, she wouldn't have a perfect bikini figure, but she'd look really nice in a dress.

http://27.media.tumblr.com/tum...

If she covered her tummy in that photo, I don't think anyone would complain. White guys need to learn to like the big white girl.

I know. To paraphrase Wash, that's the way free market go...

It didn't effect me, so I don't really care. I just thought it was sad that a family that were loyal enough to watch this team blow for decades...is now being turned away from the gates after one winning season.

The Rangers better hope last year wasn't a fluke, or there's a very distinct possibility when they start losing again in this winners town, they won't have their old fanbase to go back to.

Rooster

@Romos - 1) Its "Rangers" fanbase, not "Ranger" fanbase, Einstein. 2) Sorry dude, not taking the bait today.
