Whitt's End - reaper.jpg
Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Apparently Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones misunderstood. The NFL lockout hasn't yet commenced. While the Washington Redskins signed O.J.Atogwe and Bob Sanders landed with the San Diego Chargers, the Cowboys have done exactly nothing to upgrade a safety position that most of us believe needs help. Murmur.

*I know we're barely a week into Texas Rangers' spring training, but is anyone else already worried about new third baseman Adrian Beltre? A calf he strained running on a treadmill is worse than originally thought.

*Stretches of 17-1 are rare in the NBA. Your Dallas Mavericks have two of them this season, from Nov. 20-Dec. 27 and their current run. And to think, those feats have merely thrown them into the conversation about possibly competing with the Lakers and Spurs in the West.

*Delicious last night to watch the Miami Heat squander a 24-point lead in a home loss to the Orlando Magic. And it was Chris Bosh and LeBron James who took -- and missed -- potential game-tying 3-pointers.

*So I made it through countless trips driving from McKinney to Dallas and all around the metroplex during Super Bowl XLV on the ice and snow. Then, on a dumb dare, I smashed my car last weekend. As I was punching in the access code to a friend's gated community, my buddy dared me to try and sneak in before the gate closed behind a departing car. I made it, but not after my left side kissed a concrete pole. Me = Idiot.

*Hot.

*Not.

*I thought TCU fans were better than this. Their football team is.

*So, in exchange for $1 million tax-free cash, would you agree to eat nothing but vegetables for the rest of your life? I'm in. I think.

*I had a friend in high school who was a Mormon. Couldn't play basketball with us on Sundays and would never ever drink a Coke. So I wasn't shocked that BYU dismissed its third-leading scorer and best rebounder Brandon Davies for violating its honor code. I was surprised, however, when I found it was merely for premarital sex. Pretty sure I wouldn't last one day under those strict ridiculous provisions.

*Speaking of carbonated beverages, I'm not Catholic but I think I'll give them up for Lent after Fat Tuesday. Forty days without fizzle. Just because.

*You knew this day would come, just not this soon. And not in Las Vegas. But there's already a plan for a football stadium more expensive than Cowboys and Giants stadiums.

*Not sure where it's headed - if anywhere - but I'm hearing pretty ominous rumblings about the relationship between Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg. Basically the Nolan-is-baseball/Chuck-is-business lines are getting blurred and it's causing some friction.

Only thing better than watching Queen James & Miami Heat lose a 24 pt lead is watching them get destroyed by 30 by the Spurs. I hope this is a sign of things to come for those 3 stooges.

The Heat losing to the Bulls yesterday because they couldn't get a last second bucket yet again was even better.

Scratch that. The only thing better than Lechoke and the Heat choke-choke-choking 4 straight games is them cry-cry-crying afterwards. What a great weekend,heehee.....

Kudo's on considering abstaining from soda's. It's been 10 years since I've had one, and I only miss it when I go to the movies and smell the popcorn. I did it as a part of my goal to lose weight, which I did (40 lbs), and as most of us do, have slacked off and yoyo'd the last 10 years, but the one thing I've held onto, it staying off soda's. Keeps us updated on the progress.

"So if a car going 160 had wings, would it fly?"

It wouldn't take 160 MPH to get a car with wings off the ground. The old Piper Cub I used to fly could take off at 40 MPH. Of course it didnt weigh as much as a car, but a car doesn't weigh as much as a passenger jet.

cactusflinthead
cactusflinthead

Racin' cars regularly go over 160. It isn't just the speed the wings kinda have something to do with it as well, the operative word being lift. Look it up. First airplanes didn't go anywhere near that speed.

When I think about the Mavs' run this year and contending and all the other warm fuzzy feelings about the playoffs I remember Miami and Golden State and I come back to reality. Prove it.

Ok, let this be a lesson. Ignore Armen. All the time, every day.

Beltre concerns me. His glove is worthless sitting in his locker because he is too fragile to play.

Anybody that goes to BYU and signs up for that pile of rules is asking for trouble or has no clue how to find trouble anyway. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you may be in Utah. I keep wondering how Jim McMahon got out of there without being run off. I wonder if he got a warning or twelve. Been so long ago.

What? nothing about W, Guns or God? Yer slipping.

ParleyPPratt

With Jim McMahon, they turned a blind eye until his eligibility was up, then they kicked him out. Consider that the "liberal BYU" days of BYU sport.

But please ... not drinking a Coke? That ultraconservative weird Mormon that isn't even a rule.

cactusflinthead
cactusflinthead

Yes, even a Coke for some of them. At the risk of getting kicked in the crotch for it I must confess that back in the day I was a Boy Scout and went to the National Jamboree. Every day about 3pm they would run the coke machines and for a couple of hours all that came out of them was warm. On day 2 it dawned on us that a couple of regions over in the campsites the Idaho/Utah/Montana contingent(not sure if Montana was in that region or not, the mainstay was UT) there was a greater than zero chance that they would have some machines with the caffeinated drinks intact. Lo and behold we had found the motherlode of cold drinks. At camp they got KoolAid instead of iced tea at their dinner table. Well, anybody could have tea and/or KoolAid but theirs was strictly non-caffeine drinking. Now whether or not drinking a Coke or a glass of iced tea or a double espresso will get you run off from BYU is another question, but at least among the BSA which is also the church approved male youth group for LDS there was no cokes and no tea at camp.

PFC Huggybear was on CQ duty at Fort Ord, CA the day the riots started. I remember getting the call to alert the MP units there to be ready to move out to LA....then having to explain to the black soldiers why those cops were acquitted, since I was a legal clerk. Ah, the good old days.

On a side note, since His Hugginess is here in Myrtle Beach, the new home of the Rangers Class A team, any players I should be keeping my eye on? My Huggable baseball weenie is just tingling with excitement about this, since I love minor league baseball.

Keep an eye on control specialist and 2009 3rd round pick Robbie Erlin, He is ranked typically as the team's best pitching prospect behind Martin Perez and Tanner Scheppers. He projects as a middle of the rotation arm, but scouts like his cool confidence and think he could surpass that. He won the ERA title in the Class A South Atlantic League last season with a 2.12 ERA to go along with an impressive 125/17 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 114.2 innings.

22-year-old lefty Miguel De los Santos has the upside for tantalizing stuff, but comes with some baggage. He's yet to pitch a full season in 5 years of pro ball and has control issues from time to time. But he also has a nasty changeup that projects as the best in the system and can mix in a low to mid '90s heater to throw hitters off balance. Last year at Low A Hickory he struckout 62 batters in 38 innings. He'll probably start the year at Myrtle Beach.

Also, if he has a good spring, third basemen and 2010 supplemental 1st round pick Mike Olt could start the year at Myrtle Beach. Baseball America views him as the best power hitter in the Rangers' farm system.

Ruben Sierra Jr. is the only name I can think of right now as a possible interesting Single A player to watch, but I have no real clue where he's been assigned. I'm guessing Profar will end up at Frisco at the very least.

You're surprised Jerry didn't go after big name free agents? He hasn't since having to pony up the dough for a stajium. Bob Sanders never sees the field anyway and he isn't getting younger. Atogwe is a good but Jerry ain't a good GM.

You're the last person I'm going to listen to when it comes to Ranger player concerns, Milky McKneejerk.

I'm guessing your car mishap occurred when you attempted to make it through the exit gate and there was a separate entrance gate, which makes you a double idiot.

At least come up with a Gordo-level hypothetical. His would be $1 million to eat nothing but moldy and rotted veggies for a month.

The Vegas project is an entire complex. Three stajiums. And seeing how Vegas is already the home of the most expensive private project in world history in CityCenter, that's pretty far for the course out there. I still think the Kings would be a much better fit in Vegas than Anaheim. Why does LA need a third freaking team? They didn't even go to Clipper games pre-Blake.

We're going to get so spoiled next week, have a good vacay. That 20-something girl actually interested in you? She's going to want payment up front.

Davy Crockett

He talked about the car mishap the other day on air. Seems him and Armen were going to a buddy's place to watch something or other. The gate at the apartment complex was closing and I guess Armen told him gun it before it closed.

They also debated whether or not watching yourself masturbate in the bathroom mirror is the same as watching gay porn. I turned to the Ticket before they came to a conclusion.

Scruffygeist

Ewww. Good call on the bail out.

And who would listen to Armen? Dude can't even manage to fire off a drop that's funny or well-timed, I'm sure not going to take his advice on vehicular timing.

2. wtf how does this dude hurt himself on a treadmill? I'm on one almost every day. The only thing I've ever broken is my phone from dropping it.3. Hell of a run by the Mavs. I don't think they'll catch the Spurs but they need to keep it up to stay ahead of the Lakers. It'll be big to have the first 2 games here and get started off right. If Dirk doesn't get hurt, Spurs and Mavs are neck and neck right now.4. 2 of the top 5 players in the NBA on the same team does not make a champion. The Heat will be good next year when everyone's on the same page. Methinks that building around Wade and Bosh would have been a better plan than what they have going on, but who wouldn't want LeBron?5. Won't kick you in the balls yet.8. Don't lump "TCU fans" together because of a couple idiots. Where was Greggo when this vandalism happened?9. No fruits? snacks? Need more info before I can make that decision10. I'll be the first to say, you're too short and too slow to play college basketball.11. Thanks for being a token Catholic. If you can do P90x for 3 months, giving up soft drinks shouldnt be a problem.12. This is genious if they can have blackjack tables and strip clubs in the concourses. If not, meh. No professional team will be there.13. You were shocked and horrified because you couldn't find any news on the event. They beat the fuck out of him after he resisted arrest, even after being tasered. His BAC was .19. He had two other people with him that went peacefully. Sucks that this incident caused riots when this guy is lucky he didn't kill anyone running away from the cops. Before they stopped him they chased him for 8 miles, with speeds up to 117mph. If you're running from police AND then you fight 5 of them when they're trying to arrest you, you sir deserve to get your ass beat.14. This thing has changed immensely after the judge froze the billions available to the owners from tv revenue. Shows you what chickenshits they are. The players should take 24 days and make them sweat a little.15. I'm not good at math, but the force and friction required to get your car to go 160 is different from that of a plane and that includes escape velocity due to gravity that includes lift and other things I'm missing.16. Have a nice trip. Can't wait to enjoy SM's blogs.
