Whitt's End - reaper.jpg
Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Like me, do you think the Texas Rangers are kinda getting caught with their pants on the ground with their pitching staff exposed? The time to go get a reliable closer is not next year, it's this year. If Neftali Feliz is one of your best starters, then why is he back in the bullpen for 2011? Answer: Because at this point Texas' mediocre starters are considered better than Texas' mediocre relievers. Yuck.

*Speaking of the Rangers, when Michael Young demanded his trade some of us wrote that "we've been down this road before." Young gets his feelings hurt, complains publicly and somewhere during spring training calms down and remembers that getting paid $16 million per season to play baseball for the Rangers isn't so bad after all. He and GM Jon Daniels have talked twice this week and the end result: No trade.

*Tommy Hunter getting hurt doesn't change how I think of the Rangers one bit. And that's as the second-best team in the AL West behind the Anaheim Angels. Look at the pitching staffs and tell me I'm wrong.

*I hear people fawning over Elizabeth Taylor's looks. "In her day ..." the old foagies gloat. Yeah, but in her day there was no Internet or YouTube or anything other than three TV networks. These days we know: There are girls hotter than Liz on every street corner. But after all this hubbub, I do plan on watching Giant one of these days.

*I really don't care if Dez Bryant - or his posse - chooses to wear saggy britches. Unique style is fine by me. Some of us dorks still wear our hats backward for no particular reason. I don't think, however, that the bill in the back is nearly as offensive as someone's underwear exposed. I'd be more worried about Bryant cussing at cops. What's the upside there? Nada. Trust me, I was 23 once. It's never worth it. Bryant's advisor, David Wells, is a good man. Hopefully he'll help Bryant learn that he has a lot to lose.

*So a 4-year-old boy named Colton Burpo "dies" on the operating table and claims to have gone to Heaven, where he met his great grandfather, sat in Jesus' lap and was amazed by all the streets of gold, bright colors and peeps flying around with huge wings. A million doubts about his money-making tale but just one question: If everyone has wings, do we really need streets?

*Hot.

*Not

*Here's a good thought for former Dallas Maverick Mark Aguirre, who collapsed at an area Lifetime Fitness this week and was hospitalized. Kinda the same thing happened to current coach Rick Carlisle this year. Heading into my 50s is going to be scary. Aguirre's game, which peaked in the late '80s, would be unrecognizeable in today's NBA. He was a 6-5ish small forward who scored with his back to the basket.

*I never want to see a major injury to a professional athlete ... unless his name is David West. I giggled last night at the sight of the New Orleans Hornets' asshole falling in a heap under the basket in a game at Utah. West, with an apparent serious knee injury, left the court in a wheelchair with a towel over his face. In case you forgot, he's the thug who last month blatantly shoved Dirk Nowitzki into the third row while the two were chasing a loose ball. If you can't beat 'em, shove 'em I guess. Then, when Brian Cardinal went to help Dirk, West gave him a two-handed shove in the back before walking away. Karma is a bitch, and sometimes she teaches lessons in wheelchairs.

*Amazing that, according to Forbes, the Rangers' estimated value rose 25 percent. I guess winning and surviving bankruptcy is good for the bottom line.

*I've said it before and I'll say it again: For my money the best player in college basketball is Arizona's Derrick Williams. He was a monster in last night's upset of Duke. As for Jimmer Fredette, he scored 32 points in BYU's loss to Florida, but he also got a heaping dose of what it's like to have superior athletes in your jock all night.

When not even reading the trinity of great writers (HD Thoreau, M. Twain, DR.HS Thompson) can set the mind straight, take to the highway like a bandit and:

Tuscan Mutant Chili Taco Jumbalaya:

ground and pound garlic (overt UFC reference)sautee garlic in olive oil (sizzle like my beloved Redsox on the way to a championship)add white rice and black beansadd balsalmic, fajita spice and tabascoadd taco meat (93/7.....those of you that don't weigh 500 pounds will understand)add crushed red pepper and a nice file' seasoning (gives it a good base)chopped jalapeno's...................enjoy witha nice Bud Light and chips.

I'll admit Greggo would be better suited in a different situation, but who else is there? He's kept a pretty clean act for almost a year. Is there any chance he could get his gig back at the Ticket? I was thinking same thing when Rhyner mentioned retirement. If that happens, it's probably curtains for Corby. Gordo and Junior were cracking me up until Corby came along and brought the whole scene down.

richie is so bad he makes gregg henson or jen engel seem decent.

how sad is it that the Tardline replaced gavin & gregg only to nosedive in ratings?i mean, gavin & gregg are new to dfw while richie & greggo are actually from here.you'd think the tardline would pull better #s, but not the case at all.

how much longer until bruce gilbert offers Jake Z & TC pm drive?ty walker and the rest of the ticket weekend guys better get the demo tapes rdy.

Awesome! You are so lucky to live in the country, the Kerg's be jealous. My original goal was to be retired in Ark/OK by now, but, the best laid plans lay by the wayside-for now. Damn TRIPLE dip recession! I love it when folks say the recession is over. It could rain in Pakistan, and it affects the price of oil here-WTF? So, enjoy the fresh air WBS.

Welp, back to 4 wheelin'.

Thanks for your suggestion Makesense (RW), but Shiner is too heavy for drinking prior to a heavy meal.

Funny, no mention of the February radio ratings. Hardline 1st, Galloway 11th, Rage 18th. RIchie sure does a great job of reporting if the FAN has average numbers, which is rare. When they have awful numbers (usually the case) he ignores them.

Business fact: the FAN can't continue much longer getting 1 or 2 shares in the drive time slots.

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

ah, ESPN ratings have sucked forever, but they have the big backing. CBS Radio will weather the storm.

Duality of Man
Duality of Man

I actually thought The Hardline was better when Danny sat in for Corby. I bet Corby's ass tightened up when he heard that Mike was talking like he was gonna retire in February. I thought Corby was a good yuk monkey but he's become un-listenable as a host. What's the deal with all the yelling at the camp out ? I know they get great ratings but that's because know one is better at that time slot. Corby can make fun of and bad mouth The Hammer all he wants but year two or three Hardline would destroy today's Hardline in the ratings.

Josh's broken records
Josh's broken records

You sound like RW when he cries himself to sleep at night..was the Hardline better w sober Greggo? Yes. But that's water over the high water crossing. The campout is the most amazing radio I've ever had the pleasure to listen to, and I would bet money 1310 streaming at 9pm last night, was pulling better ratings than RAGE was at 5pm. I miss Greggo, But long live the king of radio. (campout was amazing, I was up til 1am last night, #worknight)

The Critic
The Critic

Weater the storm? It has been constant rain with hail mix and winds in excess of 60mph with no end in sight. How long can you weather a storm you created that won't end until you decide to flip. The ratings aren't growing and won't. Just look at their cume. People are tuning in and almost immediately tuning out. Face the facts, the majority of people don't like the Fan. You might think I'm a hater but I actually see potential with some of the shows, particually Gavin and Josh and Elf. Rage would be better without Richie, Greggo is fine it's Richie's attitude that's the problem. It's not cool,It's not funny,it just drives you away. It makes you embrace your Rage. It works here on the blog but on radio it Fails.

sportsgraffiti
sportsgraffiti

Rage definitely needs some re-tooling. Armen and Sybil add nothing. Richie seems better suited as a yuck monkey than a legit sports talk host. Greggo is talented but is wasted on such a poor show.

Josh and Elf are too bland. No way they can compete with BaD. Never saw what people on here liked about Gavin and think he sounds like a sportsy Pauley Shore. Newy and Arnie aren't bad but also a bit dull. Morning show is terrible. RealDirtyP1 is correct in that The Fan has deep pockets with CBS money, and hopefully they'll try to find better programming. It's better than ESPN Radio, but what isn't.

Let me guess....upcoming cover story Rangers related??

Speaking of....seems the Rangers have too many 'ifs' and 'buts' this year pitching wise to inspire the kind of confidence you'd think a WS appearance would generate - but alas, the Rangers seem destined for pitching mediocrity - or worse - blah, blah, blah - Rangers' fans know this routine all too well.

If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts....

I was really hoping for a Neftali Feliz and/or a Michael Kirkman breakthrough in the rotation.....

"I really don't care if Dez Bryant - or his posse - chooses to wear saggy britches. Unique style is fine by me." Are you kidding me? What's unique about this? Every hoodlum and his brother wears this "unique" style. Be original and don't do what other moron is doing.

Anyone who tries to argue that the Rangers starters can even almost keep up w/ the Angels is pressing...at best! Even saying CJ/Lewis is a push of Weaver/Haren sure does thinking the 40+ starts for CJ/Lewis of 2010, versus the 100+ starts of the Angels guys the last 3 years = a push seems like a pretty far stretch. I, as a Rangers homer, certainly hope that is close to accurate, but that's hard. Then Santana is way above whoever you want to list next. But, even saying the Rangers have the 2nd best staff is a reach to me. Cahill, Braden, Gonzales in OAK...that is stiff. Now, w/ their youth, hopefully they're still a year away from really dominating. The equalizer will be us beating them 7-5 this year, b/c our 1-6 hitters are better than anyone in the AL not in NY or Boston.

redshoedrangers
redshoedrangers

This is a good post. And yeah, Oakland looks like they have the best rotation of anyone in the West and their guys are still probably a long ways from peaking. Anderson, Gonzalez, Cahill, Braden is crazy good...and sadly one Brandon McCarthy who our little Red Shoed Rangers dealt one John Danks for appears to be in line as the 5th starter after a great spring. If he goes on to do well for a division rival, well that would really suck.

With lineups included, I think the Angels have the upper hand overall. It all just depends if CJ, Colby can repeat or outdo last year and if Holland can finally breakout for our Rangers to have a chance...or perhaps another midseason trade (Oswalt? 2012 free agent SPs are an ugly crop)

Davy Crockett
Davy Crockett

RW - come join our little fantasy baseball league. It's not overly time consuming, really. 10-15 minutes a day, if that, adjusting lineups.

* I'll pick the A's before I pick the Angels.

* There's lots of players I don't like, but I don't want them to get hurt. I wasn't glad when Duncan rolled his ankle. That's just sorry.

* Classical music is very underrated. Wanna hang out some time and listen to some tunes? I'll bring the beer, you bring the women..er, I'll bring both.

As an aside -

On a serious note, if any of you have P90x, don't try hawking it on eBay. You'll find yourself in a heap of trouble (potentially).

You could probably email them pictures, but, if it really is illegal, I wouldn't risk it. You could be emailing to somebody from that law firm and not know it. The thing that gets me is that eBay has to know this by now, yet they keep letting people list their copy and not warning them. Also, there are still copies for sell on there. You can't arbitrarily enforce United States Patent and Trademark regulations - it has to be all or none. Hell, I even bought my copy on eBay.

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

Yeah i read that on some forums, they do it to everyone. They'll never get that money, and I can't see where anyone has paid. It does make sense for the company that makes P90x to keep them on retainer, it reduces the market somewhat. If you have a product that can be copied and reproduced, it's going to happen. I'm about to get it for free from someone I work with. Apparently two workouts in he was done. I'm hoping it works for me like it did RW.

Davy Crockett
Davy Crockett

I doubt it. Apparently if you take a picture of your copy of P90x and post it on eBay, it's a copyright infringement (but somehow music cd's and movies aren't?). Mine got removed, then I got an email and a call from some law firm in California. After a little research, I'm not the only one. I'll worry about it if I get served. Just wanted to throw a head's up on here.

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

Can you say you can email the person pictures if they want it? I never knew it was illegal to sell something you own on ebay. That would pretty much shut the place down(well, in the US at least, the chinese don't give a fuck).

Richie - the Angels will struggle to win 81. The pitching staff with Scott Kazmir on it? Really? I know you are better than that. You like baseball and follow it. Study the Halos. Weaver and Haren vs. Colby and CJ is a virtual push. Pineiro and Holland will be pushes (at best, and Holland's upside is signficantly higher). Even if I give you Santana over either Harrison or Hunter, our advantage over Kazmir is enormous. Have you seen the scouting reports on him?

Have you seen their pen? Rodney is awful. They traded Fuentes, who at least gave us fits. They have the worst 3B in baseball. Their catcher can't hit. Until Morales gets back, their 1B is the worst in baseball and there is no assurance Morales is ever the same (see R. Mateo). Their OF is decent is in the corners (assuming Wells plays LF), but aging (and prone to up and down performance) and Abreu is a DH on the steep slope down. In fact, I bet this team struggles to win 75.

Now if you had said the As, you at least would have had some credibility on this one.

sportsgraffiti
sportsgraffiti

The resumes of Haren and Weaver (2010 strikeout champ) are not a "push" vs 1 year rotation successes CJ and Colby. And Kazmir is the #5, Big Groin Tommy wishes he could aspire to a career like Kazmir had even if Kazmir's best days are behind him.

Yes, Rodney is a roller coaster, but how about offseason signings of Scott Downs and Takahashi? And what about 100 MPH fireballer Jordan Walden?

Mike Sciossa has an argument as the best skipper in the game, and there's a reason why the Angels have owned this division for the better part of the last decade. The Rangers are clearly a well run organization and hopefully can stick around with the best in the division, but to act like it's somehow obvious who's better is dishonest at worst or ignorant at best.

Evan
Evan

This is exactly what I came to say. The Angels did not improve over the offseason. They do have solid pitching, but the A's quietly improved their offense and defense, and will likely have solid pitching from all 5 guys on their staff.

There is no doubt in my mind that this team finishes well above Anaheim and Seattle - it's Oakland that worries me. Right now, I'd estimate both us and them in the 87-90 win range.
