Mavs Win Again, Inch Closer to Best in West

Jason Terry - Sixth Man.jpg
When Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry boldly claimed last week that his team was going to catch the San Antonio Spurs, we rolled our eyes. Because, one, it wasn't possible. And, two, it didn't really matter.

After further review, watch out.

Terry scored 30 points last night on sizzling 13-of-18 shooting and the Mavs beat the Philadelphia 76ers, 101-93, for their seventh consecutive victory and 17th victory in 18 games. (Their only loss in the stretch came via Arron Afflalo's buzzer-beater in Denver on February 10.)

The Spurs, meanwhile, were blown out in Memphis. This might get interesting after all.

With 22 games remaining in the season, the Mavs (44-16) now trail the Spurs (49-11) by five games for the best record in the West. The Lakers lurk two back of the Mavs.

Gentlemen, start your stretch drives.

We don't give a damn about hanging another meaningless Southwest Division championship banner in American Airlines Center -- saw what that got us last season, right? -- but the ramifications of catching San Antonio would be this:

Avoiding the Spurs and Lakers until the West finals.

If Dallas can't catch San Antonio and finishes second, it would then face the Lakers in the West semifinals. Despite all the angling and rhetoric and massaging of the roster to directly combat the Lakers, the Mavs haven't faced L.A. in the playoffs since way back in 1988. Weird.

If the standings remain and both teams win their first-round series against diluted opponents, come early May it's on.

Unless...

The Mavs next play Indiana, Memphis and Minnesota, with an inviting chance to push their run to 20 of 21. Down the stretch they host the Lakers (March 12) and Spurs (March 18) and play in L.A. (March 31). The Lakers and Spurs, FYI, play Sunday on ABC.

Even with All-Star point guard Tony Parker sidelined at least two weeks, the Spurs are unlikely to crater. For Dallas to catch the Spurs it would have to go 17-5 the rest of the way while San Antonio went 12-10. (Spurs lead the season series, 2-1.) Again, unlikely, although four of the Spurs' next eight games are against the Heat (twice), Lakers and Mavericks.

With Peja's improvement and Roddy Beaubois' return and the consistent play of Jasons Terry and Kidd, the Mavs have made us forget they lost six in a row in mid-January and went 2-7 without Dirk Nowitzki.

The stretch run should be riveting. And it just might be rewarding.

RW, How do you not bring up that Tyson left the game with a sprained ankle? If he is not healthy and has to miss a few weeks, no way we catch San Antonio.

Well, good gravy, this is bad, I hope my wife and kids don't find out......then I hope I don't find out! Nice try peckerhead. Just remember one thing f'head....you "cain't" do what I can do, and you are making me the most noticable name onthis blog-thanks?! Welp, off to Texoma with the Kergo kid to rock climb. What? Well "fake" Kergo, it exercise, you should try it.

ps-how do you know so much about gayness? hmmmm? Methinks we have a LEFTHANDED hitter here who admires the Kerg's.

If Tyson Chandler's ankles causes him to miss more than 3 games, then no way in hell we catch them. We better hope it just rolled and didnt tear. good to see Terry go off last night, if he is going to run off at the mouth, he better at least back it. Oh and he actually dunked last night, I didnt know he could still do that. And Kergs, My toilet looked like Bachman lake this morning with all that vegas beera finally exiting my body 2 days later

Well, first of all Kergo is high. Basketball is greatness, especially playoff basketball. Give me basketball over baseball anyday. My ADD can't handle all the baseball downtime.

Big Spurs fan here and up until a couple of days ago, didn't think the Mavs had a chance to catch the Spurs. That is until Parker's injury. He's the most consistent player on the team and more valuable than Duncan. I can see the Spurs and Mavs getting really close the rest of the way, like finishing 1 game apart close. The game on March 18th is going to have a lot of meaning. This is going to be fun.

First!

Basketball is meh. C.J. Wilson practiced bunting yesterday in case he bats during interleague. If you write about a meaningless regular season basketball game, you hopefully can write about Wilson.

Headed to Bachman Lake today. Gonna put some hot sauce, pepper, and onions in my asshole and let a sturdy colored fellow tear me up while another guy covers my face in honeymoon batter. I'll wear my best white tie and gloves!

BTW, in reply to the fake Kergo.....he's right-I could give two sh$ts about basketball; it just sucks like modern hockey. I went to every home game the year they won 9 and enjoyed myself. The game is boring, makes baseball feel like a fiesta. Too many thugs, too many ego's. Bring on the spring training and stories about Beltre getting injured picking up his glove, or Napoli getting a demerit cause he killed another American Standard. What about tiny E.......is he gonna hit one past second base this year? Big game Tom-good for 15 wins. Come on people!

Are you from San Antonio? B/C if you are then of course you like basketball more than baseball...basketball is all that dump of a town has. That's like someone from Green Bay saying they like football more than they like baseball. You like what you have to work with in 1 pony show towns.

baseball spring training is the ultimate meh. More meh, then the Tour de France, and double the meh of Amateur Indoor Soccer. Wake me in September when there's actually a pennant race happening.

Noble Pils is good beera?

I'd been meaning to try it.

Ah, yeah that was too easy, but not as easy as saying that one horse town has 4 championships and 1 sport versus a town with 4 teams and 1 championship(Stars 99)That other one horse pony town you mentioned had a Super Bowl winner this year. There are plenty of dump towns around here that I'd pick San Antonio over any day, do I need to list them?

TheRealDirtyP1

I'm from San Antonio, been in Dallas since the '00. Last time I checked, Dallas only has a hockey team and a basketball team.

Dear Brett, My good friend, I believe you are incorrect. Baseball is a sign that spring has begun.......growing up in the snowy north country, it meant winter was over. I still celebrate spring. It also means it's exactly two months before I can sit in the bleachers, during a daytime game, shirt off, drinkin' dat cole ace beera.

It really depends on what 1 pony show town you are talking about. Does any D/FW team have a better shot at winning a Title over Green Bay right now, no. But do they over Portland/Sacremento, hell yes. San Antonio is tricky. I am not going to pretend I know more about the Spurs than you do, but aren't they getting old and isn't their window closing? I really don't know if I could say they have a much better shot at winning a championship in the next 5 years over a healthy Mavs team or hell, maybe even a Rangers team? I guess we will find out.

I also don't mean to come across as a cocky Dallasite. I realize that our teams have been piss poor this decade. I stated that it has been a rough drought for us the last 10 years or so.

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

That's my fault, I left out "in the last 10 years".Let me ask you this though. Who has a better chance of winning a championship in the next 5 years? Any team in this town or a team from a one horse town(SA, Green Bay, and whoever you want to put in there)I just don't understand the cockiness exhibited by the Dallasite. It's akin to Longhorn before Longhorn won in '05. Those championships that happened in the past are great, but if you didn't win the championship in whatever sport you're in, the season starts the next day and you don't really care, right?

Mishon

First off, this town has more than 1 championship. Did you forget about the 5 lombardis? If you are counting since 1999, then yes S.A. has 4 and we have 1, but what did S.A. win before 1999, yes that's right 0. (about 30 years of not winning championships). We are just going through a rough drought of championships and San Antonio will experience that again too.

Green Bay was just the first example I though of. You could use Portland and Sacramento as examples. It would not be suprising if a resident from one of those cities prefers basketball over another sport. Why? 1 pony show town.

Really man? Your are going to be that technical? You are better than this.
