BREAKING NEWS: 105.3 The Fan to Talk Sports in the Morning Beginning April 11

The Fan Van - Greggo.jpg
Yes, 105.3 The Fan is tweaking again. But this time it's not merely another shuffling of the deck, but more so a commitment to talk sports in the morning.

Out at The Fan as of April 8 are long-time radio veterans Jagger and Gregg Henson, to be replaced Monday, April 11, by "New School with Shan and RJ," a more sports-centric show hosted by former Kansas City sports talk host Shan (pronounced Shawn) Shariff and long-time 103.3 FM ESPN voice RJ Choppy. Sticking with The Fan's goal of spicing its flavor with female voices, Jasmine Sadry will remain a part of the new morning team.

"New School" will air weekdays 5-9 a.m., with the remainder of The Fan's lineup remaining intact.

UPDATE: Guess The Fan could've named its new show "The Crazy Azz Morning Show" but K104 beat them to it.

While 1310 AM The Ticket's George Dunham and Craig Miller have a stranglehold on morning drive-time radio listeners, it's The Fan's hope that a show founded more on local sports can win its battle for second place with ESPN's nationally syndicated Mike Golic & Mike Greenberg.

While Jagger and Henson -- two consummate professionals I thoroughly enjoyed working with -- did not have their expiring contracts renewed, Shariff, 30, comes to Dallas -- via Maryland -- from 610 Sports KCSP, Kansas City's home of the Royals, Kansas Jayhawks and NASCAR.

RJ Choppy.jpg
RJ Choppy
Choppy served several roles during his nine years at ESPN Radio, from reporting on the Dallas Cowboys, anchoring Dallas Mavericks' pre- and post-game shows and co-hosting shows all up and down the time slots. He even, once upon a time, hosted a show with someone named Greg Williams.

I LOVE Richie and Greggo! Thanks, guys.  You sound like you want the Mavs to win and don't have man-crushes on Dwayne and LeBron....

Oh.Hi
Oh.Hi

I'm tired of hearing the two of these guys whining all morning already... I'll stick to the Ticket.

I have been listening to Jagger since The EDGE days. So I look forward to following/listening to his next radio gig! Hopefully it won't be sports as I think that was never his intent anyway.

How in the world does Jasmine keep her job? Blackmail? Knee pads? She's awful. Shut her mike off after she reads the traffic.Jagger is talented, but didn't seem comfortable in an all sports format.

My guess is knee pads? The same way Richie keeps his job.

I guess R.A.G.S. (Richie and Greggo Suck) is all this station has left. "Wash your nut sack with R.A.G.S radio" afternoon drive will be there new slogan. Format change in..............................3............................................2........................................1...............................LOSING!!

LAME! HATE the change

Lame. That makes RAGE the only program *almost* worth listening to on The Fan.

Bad Reception

I have switched to The Fan from the ticket because I can't get a reception with the Tickets crappy signal. If the Ticket is so great get a freakin station that people can hear in the MAJOR CITY you are based in. Idiots.

That's it. I am through with the Fan. I have listened to them all day every weekday since the station debut. I am so sick of the constant changes that I am going back to ESPN or the Ticket.

They need to get rid of rage...racist puzzies! Josh n Elf are waaaaaaaay better then rage. Greggo is a racist coke head n Richie is just a big puzzy, a poser. Gavin n Newy are good too. FUCK RAGE!!! I'm never up early enuff for Jagger Mafia, so I don't really care.

Gee and am glad this comes from such an "impartial" source we can all trust. Kind of like Jerry Jones telling media what he wants deseminated, oh wait that's propaganda from the Dean of "Da Fan"

Against the Musers, the Fan may as well run the Emergency Broadcast System test over and over again...the ratings will be just as good.

wow. rj choppy in the morning. this guy is horrendous. This show wont last 6 months. out of town blow hards always fail here.

Why would they not put the only good show they have on in the morning, josh and elf.

the rest of the station is horrendous.

Prety funny, RJ Choppy in the morning drive. I think the sound of static for 3 hours would do better in the am.

Mister Front Row

The Fail's lineup changes make Spinal Tap's drum throne look like the Rock of Gibraltar.

Not much of a surprise from the station whose most recent promo includes a plea for listeners to listen because "We don't suck as much as we used to." Attempted humor that reveals a pathetic truth.

Where will Jagger and Henson go? That's what I'll be listening for?!!!

I'd hate to try and program against the Ticket. Kinda like the Cowboys, they're an institution even if (like the Cowboys) they have their ups and downs. That said, a local alternative to Mike & Mike is a smart play. I like Josh & Elf but wonder if they'd be the ones better suited for mornings. Speaking of sports radio, here are my top 10 (current) shows:

1. BaD Radio (Ticket) - Some strange chemistry over there. Even when they veer off the track, it's still fascinating, like a train wreck.

2. Josh & Elf (Fan) - They meshed well quickly, the sports show equivalent of a sno-cone...goes down easy but too much at once will induce a headache.

3. Ben & Skin (ESPN) - I know their humor and approach is an acquired taste, but they make me chuckle at least some of the time, and they're not afraid to serve up strong opinions.

4. Musers (Ticket) - The Michael Young of sports radio...you can count on 200 hits each year but not much in terms of change. Steady, with a few extra points for those times when Gordo goes overboard.

5. Galloway & Co. (ESPN) - Ol' Randy (GU) teeters on sports senility at times, but dang it if that combo with Ian and Matt doesn't produce some (unintended?) sports brilliance. At least sometimes.

6. Hardline (Ticket) - Once upon a time, they were #1 on my list. Now, it's almost like a cookie-cutter show...much too predictable. Switching out Corby for Gordo would probably do wonders, but it won't happen.

7. Rage (Fan) - Love to hear Greggo back on the radio, but it sounds like the Temptations without the original members...the thrill is gone. And, sorry Richie, you are a better scribe than talking head.

8. Norm (Ticket) - Norm is...well, Norm. Nothing more, nothing less. But worth listening for those priceless dad jokes and that one-of-a-kind giggle.

9. Mike & Mike (ESPN) - When there's a big national story, they're worth a few minutes of time. Otherwise, just lots of white noise out of Bristol.

10. Coop & Nate (ESPN) - Pretty unlistenable whenever Big Nate is on the mike. I know he means well (and makes decent points more than you might expect). Chuck deserves better, which may be why he is absent so much from his own show.

If the were smart - the people at the Fail would use all that CBS money to just buy the Ticket from Cumulus and move the whole bunch to 105.3. That is the only way they will be successful. RJ Choppy and some midwest spare against the Musers is truly David vs. Goliath.

You can't talk about a morning show being about local sports when you bring in a douche from Maryland. Y'all will never be able to hold The Morning Musers jock. The only thing u have going for you is Richie and Greggo and you guys aren't that good. Boom!!! Losing!!

I've only lived in Dallas for two years, so I didn't hear Greggo on the Ticket. But, drug issues aside, I never read or hear anything negative about his radio talent. To me, he and Ritchie both just sound like a couple of hicks who are basically grunting out a show. Sometimes he makes an insightful observation, but he isn't witty or clever. If anything, his goofy non sequiturs are somewhat enduring in a Woody Paige kind of way. Someone please explain, what's the allure of this guy?

Is it just me, or does that paint job on the side of 105.3 the Fan's SUV make it look like Greggo has a serious case of man-boobs?Stay hard.

RJ Choppy's work is outstanding--he's one of the best in our local market. I hope he's given as much on-air freedom as he had at 103.3--his degenerate gambling talk segments were/are radio gold.Choppy is more substantive than everyone on the "Ticket" w/the exception of Norm Hitzgest and Bob Sturm--the only two guys at the "Ticket" that sound like they actually study and prepare for their job.I love the "Ticket" and all the shtick and bits, but sometimes I want to actually learn something or hear some boring, old, serious, straight sports talk--as cynical and mean as Dan Paul is, sometimes he and Rein's and Corby will actually get into meaty discussions about the Rangers or Mav's--but there should be more of that--not less of it--on the little "Shticket".Stay hard.

Bigsho78

If you want SPORTS!! then you should listen to the fan for your SPORTS!! it's obvious The Ticket is not concered about SPORTS!! If you are tuning in too an Am radio sports station to learn about sports then you u don't know much about sports and should listen to the Fan and Chopper............Chopster............What??

Dallas, Enjoy Shan Shariff. We'll take him back if you don't want him.

I don't understand the love for the ticket. Of course this crap on 105.3 outside of The Two Live Jews is horrible, but everything on the ticket outside of Norm's occasional, once a month, brilliance is pure garbage. How many times can you listen to concert calendar, horrible fake impersonations, and hosts who talk about themselves and their little clique all day? Not to mention anyone with a horrible pre-pubescent voice like Corby shouldn't be allowed near a mic. I get it's a tough gig to pull off but why do people love the ticket?

RJ is boring so I can't imagine this working well. I loved when they picked up Elf because it gave me something to listen to, but their morning and evening shows suck ass.

How hard is it to figure out that male sports die hards, who are your target demo, can't stand listening to women talk about sports? Guys have to listen to wives nag and bitch and don't want a female talking sports. Get it assholes??

Bigsho78

Apparently we can listen to it for about 17 years and we will continue to listen to it.

A lineup change at The Fail? Wow, what a surprise.

Jagger had an entertaining show alog with Jasmine and producer Troy. Hensen belongs with Norm and the other sports geeks that know the neighbor of the third assistant coach of the U of Southern North Dakota. WTFC? They can't tell you anything worthwhile about sports teams because they are too busy flapping their jaws with their poor predictions and know-it-all attitude. If they were right half of the time they might be worthwhile. ESPN is plain boring except for the Rangers now. They cater to a small handfull of people not from here, and their name brings the advertising revenues, not their personalities. Sad to see the change. Your tag line is right. Trying to suck less. Keep trying.

Laynebuck

We will miss Shariff in Kansas City. He was starting to grow on me, and his anlysis is spot on. He will upset a lot of people as he does not say what people want to hear, but it makes for good listening. A younger Jim Rome?

FormerCBSListener

What a shame. Well that's ok. I have better things to do in the morning besides listen to the same sports stuff over and over. Atta boy CBS another listener gone. I guess it's back to Russ Martin.

G to the O
G to the O

the dumbasses at CBS run their radio station like their tv stations #rd rate and always in last place. maybe that change needs to start at the top down!! Bunch of jag-offs

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

back to constant fake bits and fake callers? Read the headlines, this is a SPORTS station. Besides the fact that Jagger consistently knows very little about what he's talking about, he can't even give correct pop culture references(i.e. doesn't know the difference between Lil Wayne and Lil Jon). I don't think he gives a fuck anymore.

Herbert the pervert
Herbert the pervert

I am not a Russ fan but I have to defend him here. When did he ever say his bits were real? For people to act so butthurt about it almost makes me think they believed they were real. It's radio its nothing more than entertainment. Anyone who believed he was actually doing those things was a moron. Is he an asshole, yes, but I believe he even admitted it in Richie's article.

Scruffygeist
Scruffygeist

I gotta believe that the same person (probably Gregggggggggg) keeps posting the support posts under different names, because it's virtually impossible to believe there were any loyal Jagger on The Fail fans bailing on the entire station, because it only got better at 9. Until 2, when it starts sliding back downhill.

Jagger with a rebooted supporting cast would be welcome back on The Edge as far as I'm concerned. I like them playing music in the morning, but you can only play Nirvana so many times an hour before it gets repetitive...

Mishon

He was on the edge at one time...not sure why he ever left. I hope he doesn't go back there though, I like them playing music in the mornings too.

According to some people CBS is going to weather the storm with their deep pockets.Imagine a cup with a hole in the bottom. Now imagine an everlasting supply of money pouring out the bottom and you have the Fan. I expect a format change in a couple of years as well but Richie continues to say they will stick with it.

That "M-Gay Crappy" is even douchier looking than he sounds on radio! Bad hire couch, bad hire! But what the hell do I know! I thought hiring Elf was a bad idea, and Josh and Elf turned out to be a pretty damn good show.
