Whitt's End: 2.25.11

Whitt's End - reaper.jpg

Whether you've reached the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*I still don't fully understand Michael Young leaving Rangers spring training for two days. The team announced it was a "family matter." Manager Ron Washington said Young "has a family thing." And Young, as he left, told reporters in Surprise, Arizona that "Everything's great." But yesterday on 105.3 The Fan outfielder Nelson Cruz told Greggo and me that Young left to attend the funeral of a family friend. A thing? Everything's great? Why didn't the Rangers and Young just announce he was attending a funeral in the first place? Probably totally legit and I'm not saying otherwise on any level. What I am saying is that calling it merely a "family matter" leaves the whole departure -- considering Young's recent trade demands - open to second-guessing and skepticism.

*Cruz, who had two hits in yesterday's intrasquad scrimmage, also said after his first hit that teammates in the dugout flashed him the "Claw." Funny. I figured both "Claw" and "Antlers" were one-year wonders.

*Despite making no trade, the Mavs were significantly better this week. With the departures of Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams to the East, to me it's clear the NBA's Western Conference will be won by one of our teams: Dallas, San Antonio, the Lakers or Oklahoma City. The weakened West means easier first-round matchups for teams with home-court advantage. I fully realize they've imploded in recent years at Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, but this year the Mavs' opening opponent will be severely diluted.

*Sorry ESPN "Breaking News" scroll, but the Cowboys planning to talk with Cam Newton at the NFL Scouting Combine isn't breaking news. Won't every team talk to him? If not, there's your breaking news: The teams who totally ignore him.

*I think I've been pretty up front and honest with radio ratings in this here blog. I've admitted time and again that 1310 The Ticket is the unchallenged dynasty and that my station -- The Fan -- is at this point merely jockeying with 103.3 ESPN for second place. What I would like to refute is the lazy, dismissive criticism that generally goes along the lines of "The Fan and its 17 listeners." How does this grab you? The Fan actually has more listeners, or a larger "cume,"  than The Ticket. In January, in fact, 72,400 more. From January 6-February 2 among Men 25-54, The Fan attracted 236,400 unique visitors who spent at least five minutes listening, more than ESPN (215,800) and The Ticket (164,000). You can point out that The Fan's 100,000-watt signal helps that number and that The Ticket's smaller audience tunes in for much longer periods of time - hence, better ratings -- and you'd be right on both counts. But as for customers walking through the front door...well, just remember those numbers the next time you start to lean on the tired old crutch of "The Fan and its 17 listeners." And, as for my specific time slot -- 3 to 7 p.m. -- The Fan in January attracted 89,300 unique listeners, behind ESPN (126,600) and The Ticket (112,600). Compared to January 2010, however, The Fan's afternoon drive cume is up 14,000, ESPN's is flat and The Ticket's down 24,000. Small steps. And, by the way, those of you -- you know who you are -- who confidently wagered that The Fan would flip formats by March 1, um, time to pay up. Next month we'll be at Rangers spring training, then we'll be the broadcast home of March Madness and in April we're planning a trip/show to The Masters and serving as the home of the NFL Draft. You get the point.

*Hot.

*Not.

*Is it Dallas police or all police? And does it happen more now or do we now just see it more thanks to dash-cam video? On the heels of the Ryan Moats incident and the motorcyclist incident comes this week's month-old news -- better late than never -- that a white officer maced and kicked a black suspect who was tazed, handcuffed and on the ground. I say if you resist arrest, all bets are off. Police should be allowed to use the appropriate amount of force necessary to restrain a suspect. But once restrained, that's when "excessive" kicks in. And no doubt officer Quaitemes Williams should've been fired for his abuse of Rodarick Lyles. But Rodarick, if you want to avoid the chance of future such encounters, don't drive with a suspended license. Pretty simple. Lots of us do it every day. Without incident.

*How much would you have bet against Quaitemes being...red-headed?

*Kudos to Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg. Said he'd improve the ballpark experience for Rangers fans and he's putting his money where his mouth is. A total of $17 million in upgrades to the joint in Arlington, including a 40-yard HD video board (JumboJerry down the street stretches 60 yards) atop right field and a personal inspection and fixing of every cup holder.

*I remember when you'd call your friends and invite them over to watch MTV. Hours upon hours of checking out videos. Last weekend in Daytona during some down time I flipped on the music television network and caught a show called Silent Library. Dumbest thing I've ever seen. Basically six contestants have to perform stunts -- such as licking a dirty plate or absorbing kisses from a clown -- while being totally quiet. But they're not quiet. At all. Even when they're drawing cards to see which member of the group has to perform the challenge, they violently slap the cards on the table and then laugh at each other. If I was going to lose $600 for being too loud, I'd probably just gently turn the cards over. But that's just me. I loved Beavis & Butt-head and Jackass, but this one's lost on me.

*One of the coolest things about the Daytona 500 -- or any NASCAR race for that matter -- is the ability to listen to driver/team communications via scanners. Last weekend Dale Earnhardt Jr. was dropping at least one eff-bomb per lap. You can rent the scanner and headphones for $35. I'd pay at least that much for the ability to hear the chatter between Tony Romo and Jason Garrett.

*Very sad news that the European Crossroads is being bulldozed. R.I.P., Amnizia, site of my last fistfight. 1984ish. In the parking lot. Shirtless. Over some girl. Extremely likely that alcohol was involved on some level.

*When he's being a regular 20-year-old dork, Daytona 500 champ Trevor Bayne drives a Ford F-150 pickup. Thankfully he says it's red, not white.

*UFC 127 is tomorrow night in, of all places, Sydney, Australia. Give me B.J. Penn over Jon Fitch.

*I don't get this band at all. I do, however, dig this cheerful type of pick-me-up.

*Surprised that -- considering they were missionaries en route to delivering Bibles -- God didn't better protect the four folks killed by Somali pirates last week. Maybe he was too busy orchestrating the 6.3 earthquake in New Zealand?

*This weekend? Feels like a good time to watch UFC Saturday night and soak in some Oscars Sunday night. Don't be a stranger.

Most athletic tapes available on the market today are madeof cotton, which means it’s highly absorbent while remaining impervious towater or sweat. Athletic tape works by protecting your muscles and preventingunnecessary strain by keeping muscles and tendons firm.  It also preventschafing and helps hold equipment, like pads, skates and other gear, inplace.  Athletic tape can also be used to help minimize additional damageto existing injuries, particularly on the hands, feet and wrists, where manyathletes are most vulnerable.

Holy shit, what Happenen, I go to Vegas for 4 days and we get 120 comments? All I know is I got tiredhead just reading all the ratings comments. Who cares, listen to what you want and enjoy it. We have some of the best sports talk radio in the country, if you dont believe me, then think back to what Gavin and Henson show sounded like. Yep thats about what every other sports station in the country brings. Be glad that we have our unique brand of sports talk radio that eveyone here enjoys. Its real ironic that all the haters of Richie on the radio, spend so much time here writing about him. Anyhow, Ill keep listening to the Ticket and Ill switch over to richie n greggo when im bored with the ticket or commercials

It's been along time since I've seen this many comments on Richie's blog. Maybe instead of top ten lists he should push people's buttons a couple times a day.

Sometimes his trolling is silly (the Josh Hamilton pneumonia thing being at the top of the list), but this time, his comment on the ratings has everyone worked up, but he didn't actually say anything wrong. He made it very clear that the Ticket is number one. The people who are ignoring that to attack his "spin" are perhaps revealing more about themselves than they are about Richie.

No Spin Sven

oh contrare mon frere, he's knowingly spinning the more "cume" angle. the facts are 105.3 as any format dominated cume for many yrs. a 100k watt signal will do that evidenced by your geriatric neighbors who are st louis cardinal fans b/c of kmox and its 50k watts.

its a spin that was realized and dismissed as bogus by ALL in sportsradio (even by some on his very own station).what my spies tell me is that he cbs banned him from bringing up ratings on this blog (notice the 3 month silence from end of 2010 til now AND a pig latin reply a few weeks ago confirming such), however, his hits on this here blog were below what Observer mgmt approved of.a discussion took place with cbs in which he begged to post about ratings (so he could keep his gig @ the observer...knowing ratings posts creates hits/comments).

the compromise was that he could ONLY post about ratings IF he could spin ANYTHING positive about cbs radio's dallas affiliate.

don't believe me?how could you or anyone even attempt to positively spin a 1.6 for dfw pm drive?

instead of swallowing his pride, admitting defeat & relegating himself to writing for a free paper which its circulation is primarily used as blankets for the homeless, he tells all readers (cuz he knows he has more readers here than 105.3 has total listeners) all is well and ratings are heading in the right direction.meanwhile, the very PPM he thought would be his ally turns out to be his grim reaper.

nothing personal against him.just pointing the inaccuracies of his ratings statements.if you think its just me pointing out his pitiful attempt of positive spin of putrid ratings, check out barry horn, craig miller, danny balis, and gordon keith.

to borrow a commenter's handle:

PPM doesnt lie.

i wish you well in future endeavors, richie.

He's never said the Fan was better than the Ticket. If you have proof of that, show me.

I can't really prove or disprove what you say about behind the scenes conversations, but for the sake of argument I will stipulate that you are correct. You'll get no argument from me that Richie put the ratings in the most positive light possible, but I wouldn't expect him to do anything else.

The comments I'm specifically referring to are the people saying (real quote), "Amazing how you continue to try to spin it to make it seem that The Fail is better than The Ticket." That's just absolutely false, and it in no way reflects what was written in the blog.

You'll get no argument from me that the Fan could use a bump in ratings to remain viable in the long term. Perhaps what is depressing is that they have the on-air talent to be more successful, and it seems like it's not being used very well. (As much as I would like to say how I think the Fan should be fixed, I don't feel comfortable posting it publicly because there are nice people at the Fan just trying to make a living, but it's not terribly difficult to figure out what should change.)

Been away for the weekend. Richie, I promise I will stop punching the 105 button everytime the Ticket goes to commercial. That will bring the cume number down substantially. I'm willing to start a new pool that says new format for 105.3 by June I, 2011.

i think we know who Spank Miller is referring to on his blog:

"Thanks to the P1's for supporting America's Favorite Radio Station for 17+ years now. In those 17 years, our demise has been predicted by many, but it hasn't happened (yet). There is also a lot of false information floating around out there regarding the ratings--one reason I felt like the facts needed to be presented.

For years, The Ticket was number one using the old diary method. In 2008, the Arbitron ratings service replaced the diaries with the PPM method (a small pager-looking device that detects what station you are listening to), and The Ticket has done even better in that system, despite many who said "PPM will show the truth, and The Ticket will suffer." The truth is, The Ticket is still going strong, thanks to the best and most loyal group of listeners in the country.

Stay Hard!"

From Barry Horn in the Dallas Morning News: His ratings story. Who is likely to be less biased about radio ratings, a blogger who HAS a radio show on an all sports station or a scribe without one?

Radio Daze

Latest ratings finally trickled in this week. It’s the January book. The dates are actually Jan. 6 to Feb. 2.

Among men 25-54, the most important demographic in the sports talk world, KTCK-AM (1310) The Ticket reigned supreme weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Ticket’s average share was a 7.9, which made it No. 1 in the demographic among all stations in the market. It won the sports talk gaggle in every hour. ESPN-FM (103.3) scored a 2.9 share, good for 14th. Meanwhile, KRLD-FM (105.3) The Fan, managed a 1.9 share, which tied it for 23rd. It was The Fan’s lowest ranking in the Dallas-Fort Worth market since March.

Some bullet points:

The Ticket’s Dunham and Miller posted the three highest-rated hours at 8 a.m. (10.0), 7 a.m. (8.8) and 9 a.m. (8.7).

ESPN finished behind The Fan all three hours of Ben and Skin. Newy Scruggs topped them from 9 to 11 a.m. with Josh and Elf topping them at 11 a.m.

Josh and Elf then went on to finish behind Colin Cowherd’s tape-delayed show from noon to 2 p.m.

ESPN’s national offerings – Mike and Mike (6-9 a.m.) and Cowherd – were relatively strong performers compared to the Fan’s programming. In the hours Dunham and Miller averaged 8.2, Mike and Mike scored 4.1 while The Fan’s Jagger and Henson were at 1.7.

In afternoon drive from 3-6 p.m., it was The Ticket’s Hardline (8.3), ESPN’s Galloway and Company (2.8) and the Fan’s Richie Whitt and Greg Williams (1.6).

Josh and Elf beating Ben and Skin = meh.

Josh and Elf losing to Colin Cowturd = ouch.

Jagger and Henson would lose to a test signal.

are Ben and Skin doing brackets yet? Like their tournament of 64 best movies or fast food? Then we'll truly know they're on their way out. I compare that content to when RW posts a youtube clip with a paragraph intro.

Amazing how you continue to try to spin it to make it seem that The Fail is better than The Ticket. You've been preaching doom & gloom for The Ticket for a few years now every since you stabbed them in the back with your little Greggo expose when they wouldn't let you in their club and, as you usually are, you were wrong. Clearly, people that tune in to The Fail immediately tune out because your content blows.

Attended Ticketstock 2011 last night. Thousands of P-1s gathered to celebrate the greatness of The Ticket. Another example of how you guys can't do what they do.

When you try to spin numbers in your favor it just makes you look like an even bigger tool. That is why people hate you.

Richie wrote a good article about the Hardline breakup, give him some credit. I remember Rhyner even saying that it was well done, likely before they were inundated with anti-Corby emails. Would you prefer it had been written by a Ticket groupie and sucked up to them the entire article? It's not like Greggo exactly came off swell either in it.

Ticketstock has gotten too family friendly I think. It used to be nowhere near as crowded as it is now, and frankly the Plano Centre isn't big enough of a venue with all the corporate vendors taking up space. The autograph lines are a joke too and not even worth dealing with unless you feel like camping out. The Ticket could better coordinate it and be more up front how many autograph vouchers they're giving for a particular athlete (for example, I went out for Barry Sanders a couple years back assuming it was 500 like usual. Turns out it was 300 vouchers and even some of those were reserved for Ticket employees. So a lot of waiting around only to be turned away).

Richie did seem like he was stretching the #s a bit, and no doubt Ticket is the best station in town by a mile, but I don't think competition is bad and I hope the Fan can improve with time. They are at least adapting to a Ticket friendly format unlike the sports blowhards at ESPN. But yeah, I think the station needs some direction and hopefully Bruce Gilbert will improve things and make the shows better and give listeners more options buddy[/Laddy].

I too dont care about f-ing ratings! I like listening to Rage. I even actually like Josh & Elf. Hardline is crap these days. Corby is still the same life-draining, ass-blisterer he's always been. My Gawd, If he has'nt honed any skills in 10 yrs, he's probably not going to! I cant believe the Greggo drops they continue to play. However...I would like to have Greggo go on Hardline for one day to hash it out with those guys. I would quit my job to hear that!!

Once again, RW, you beat us down with your atheism. We get it already . . . you're angry at God. But blaming Him for an earthquake or pirate attacks is about as delusional as claiming The Fail is a legitimate power player in DFW. Seriously, you need to stop talking religion. We don't click this every Friday to read about your misguided theology. I'm sure you probably blame God for your failed marriage as well. Have you ever heard of a little thing called theodicy? Probably not. Please do some research--and study up on something called Pascal's Wager if you can find time in between watching UFC (ultimate d-bag activity) and writing for a spare free newspaper. (Yes, the Dallas Morning News sucks hard, but at least it's not being used as blankets by homeless people.)

Love,Satan . . . you believe in ME?

Richie Whitt
Richie Whitt

Atheism? Nope. Angry at God? Not even a little. Blame he/she/it for my divorce? No way. That was all me. My marriage was salvagable, but I voluntarily chose to trash it.I just think it's funny how people who capitalize Him praise Him for the good things but conveniently don't hold Him accountable for the bad shit. He's either an omnipotent God, or he ain't. Can't have it either/or. I was raised very staunch Southern Baptist, enough to know that God supposedly has a plan and there's a reason for everything. I'll just sit here and wait while you come up with the reason for the earthquake in New Zealand or the missionaries who didn't get to deliver Bibles because they were gunned down by pirates.

Richie needs Jesus
Richie needs Jesus

Wow . . . surprised you responded. No need to beat a dead horse. There's no way I'm changing your mind . . . and there's no way you're changing mine. All I will say is this: when one of my closest friends died of cancer two years I never ONCE blamed God for the disease. Instead, I PRAISED God for keeping my friend alive as long as He did. My friend was given six months to live . . . survived six YEARS. And he praised God every second of every day. Did God give my friend cancer? No. (Find me one Scripture which proves otherwise. Bet you can't. Remember, God suffers as we suffer, and gives us strength to withstand and even redeem our pain. The Bible affirms this assertion in countless examples--2 Corinthians 4.1,16; Ephesians 3.13; Hebrews 12.5; Revelation 2.3.)

You would fit in well with the ancient Greeks, who saw their gods as capricious and immoral. Zeus would throw lightning bolts at those who displeased him.

In short my agnostic friend, we are never too far away from God's grace. You only want good in this world? Well, so do I. So does everyone. But that would mean God would have to strip us of FREE WILL, making us mere automatons. Do you really want to be a puppet? I don't. So I'll take the bad with the good. (As C. S. Lewis writes, "Pain is used as God's megaphone or a deaf world. God does not create the pain, but He uses it to bring glory. I suppose we could say he permits some suffering to bring about His greater good.")

There will always be another disaster in the news, RW. So I guess you're going to go through life being jaded and hissed off. Me? I'll cling to the enduring hope and strength to face all trials with the courage that comes from God alone. The God I trust and serve.

He promises that nothing can separate us from his love--not death or life, angels or demons, the present or the future, height or depth or anything else in all creation (Romans 8:38-39). We are never beyond the reach of his grace.

I'll pray for you, Richie. Even if you've given up on God, He hasn't given up on you.

modern man

You are going about spreading your beliefs from a close-minded starting point. Richie is already skeptical of religion so what good is quoting some bible verses going to do? He, and other skeptics, already thinks it's quite possibly a bunch of mumbo jumbo to begin with. You also conveniently go by the "everything happens for a reason" mantra that the Sportatorium point takes issue with. You can sight something in your personal life, but how about those people who die terrible deaths in severe pain? Did that happen for a reason? But wait, obviously it is God that has given us free will! So anything that happens is excusable from that reasoning...how convenient. And all those atheist scientists who find cures for diseases? Well, I guess they were just misguided but God gave them that free will to become so smart... You are opening yourself up to questioning by going by such a simple-minded ideology.

modern man
modern man

High and mighty religious people have no time for those of us who have some questions about the mysteries of the universe, so they refer to agnostics as atheist. It's lazy and simple minded, and tellingly as far as they want to engage in such a topic.

no one really

Whats more annoying, "praising jesus" when someone wins the big game??

or

complaining like a leaky vag when about people NOT blaming jesus for bad things.

its called not being a 100% selfish ego absorbed douche-wagon. I'm not even a particularly religious person but I get it. If a person wants to "praise him" because they credit what they perceive as his teachings for making them a better person and thus helping to make good things happen -so what. I'm sure you celebrate when good things happen to you - but don't go around looking for blame for all the bad things ... right?

But hey - when you go to spring training go give your little speech to Hamilton. Nah that's too easy. (and admittedly cliche). Go give you your little speech to a church where people are volunteering to help people other than themselves. Or hell - fly out to NZ and stand over a family who lost loved ones that GASP! - made the clearly stupid mistake of believing in something higher than themselves - and yell in their face "WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW!!!!!???"

besides - your little quips about god are NO Different than someone "praising him" when something good happens... the difference here would seem that they use it to celebrate good and you seem to use it to celebrate the bad.

solutions for 105.3 other than flipping to all talk, all the time:

1 - axe the white flag morning show and replace it with the 2Live Jews sans lacey.2 - demote richie to yuk monkey, add BDH to greggo, get a competent board op, axe sybil & subtract an hour.3 - move gavin dawson to middays and slide arnie to 6-9pm4 - 9-midnite go to network as its Fox Sports Radio's #1 show - Tony Bruno's "Into the Night"5 - leave newy as is

I think Josh and Elf need to be split up. They both know sports very well, but they are too similar. They need to be teamed with guys who bring some...weirdness.

Gavin and Arnie should be teamed up with folks. Gavin did really well with Richie and Arnie does really well with Wally. Those guys have a lot of talent, but they'd be a better fit if they were teamed with straight-laced guys to play of their craziness.

* It's weird timing with all the bitching, sure, but I didn't read too much into MY leaving for a couple of days. It seems like a player or two has to leave every year.

* I don't really worry about any team out of the West. Would love a Spurs/Mavs Conference Finals though. Always a great series.

* Screw the ratings Richie. Here's what I listen to: Musers, flip between Newy and Norm, Josh and Elf (I like Sturm but Dan is an ass whip of the highest order), Hardline (mostly) and Rage (when not the Hardline). Not saying any of them suck, just my preference. Now, if Big Dick joins Rage, I'll tune in more. Have to agree though, that growling mess Sybil does makes me tune out pretty quick. I don't if having golf will help the station though. I turn that on the tv if I need a nap, can't listen to it while driving.

* Haven't been to the Temple since '06 due to living out of the area. Hit Minute Maid (not that great), Comisky (pretty nice), Wrigley (best baseball experience in the land), Miller Park (pretty cool), new Busch Stadium (good place to catch a game). Anyway, looking forward to seeing the upgrades at the Ballpark.

* I'm too old to watch MTV, but there's a show called 'Pranked'. It's basically videos of friends playing pranks on each other. It can be pretty funny.

* I'll never get into NASCAR. Just not anything remotely cool about it. And yes, I've been out to TMS for a race. Not my scene.

* Is it safe to say the dude you got in a fight with was taller than you? If so, I envision the fight being like the Whack-A-Mole game at Chuck E Cheese.

These Charlie Sheen rants remind me of Richie around his divorce.

I didn't know what Richie was going through at the time or I would have cut him some slack, but when he got on the air each morning with Newy, he sounded hungover and bitter.

I imagined him unshaven, wearing crappy clothes, smelling bad, slumped over on the microphone during commercial breaks, etc. Basically, the way I imagine Gavin is 90% of the time.

The 1% Club was invented around that time, and I think it was just so Richie could vent and hate on people.

Richie, I am a daily reader of your blog and enjoy it. I disagree with probably 80% of your opinions/beliefs but hey that's what makes our world great! Anyways, I love the blog and understood what you were saying about the radio ratings. I keep trying but I really don't like anything The Fan has to offer (except the Rangers pre and postgame shows). Sorry I am just a Tickethead. However, We have seen the crap that the ticket will throw out without competition. competition is good. As a cop, it is disappointing to see the guy in dallas blow his top AFTER the assault. A good solid ass whooping in a justified situation (pre handcuffs) is definitely warranted. But, once the cuffs go on, try and contain yourself. Keep up the goodwork on the Sportatorium!

Wow, long time no post, RW. I don't think I've even posted since the new format.

I've tried to listen to the show on occasion, but without ball busting too much, the other wheels on the show need to stay in the background. No more Sybal (sp?) and I don't even know who the other guy is. Love you and Greggo, but you need more host driven content, and less listener on air input. Not that I could do any better, I just know what I like to listen too.

I almost always have guys over for UFC, but this one doesn't have my interest. I'll just follow the online play by plays. Also, heard that Strikeforce Grand Prix is coming to AAC in June. Might be kinda cool, like a minor league game, et al.
