Whew! Mavs Escape Cavs. Barely.

Mavs - Logo.jpg
I covered the Dallas Mavericks in the early 1990s when they won 11 and 13 games in back-to-back seasons. It wasn't fun. For anyone.

In '93 the Mav-wrecks lost 20 consecutive games, so I can imagine the despair these days with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the wake of losing LeBron James, they've deteriorated into one of the worst teams in NBA history.

After last night's 99-96 loss to the Mavs at American Airlines Center, they've now lost a league-record 25 straight games and 35 of their last 36. This is the stuff of the Washington Generals.

For Cleveland, it was almost relief. For Dallas, this close to the ultimate humiliation.

And let's face it, the Mavs were lucky.

The Mavs trailed by seven early, led by as much as 15 in the middle and then survived late. After a Dirk Nowitzki turnover with 10 seconds left, Cleveland's Anthony Parker lined up a straightaway 3-pointer from 25 feet that hit the front rim and danced around before falling off and being fumbled back to Cleveland on the perimeter.

But when he found the ball in his hands with time expiring, Antawn Jamison decided not to shoot, but to pass. To Jamario Moon?

Even though they've won nine straight and Peja Stojakovic finally made an appearance last night (a rusty 1 of 6 on 3-pointers), still not convinced all is right with the Mavs. The win in Boston over the weekend was impressive, but last night was more luck than skill.

In a related story, have I been too immersed in the Super Bowl swamp to miss the absence of TV color analyst Bob Ortegel? I'll get us an answer.

Crap man, baseballs done and football be over, yo. Now I have to put with a month and a half of Mavs and Stars-bleck!

I like Bob Ortegel and hope all is well with him. On his twitter, Mark Followill has said that Bob is fine and is taking some time off for personal reasons but won't expand on that. Brad Davis is snoozeville and I don't think Cuban should ever be forgiven for banishing Ortegel to radio for a season in favor of Davis a few years back.

Bob has been here since the crappy days of the early '90s and watching Mavs games feels more relatable with him around.

Not that Otregal is great or anything, but the broadcast with Skin and Harper is bad. Even Followill was struggling with those two. Takes time to develop chemistry I know, but Skin just states the obvious and Harper seems asleep half the game.

Same old Mavs, endlessly spinning their wheels towards another 2nd round playoff exit at best. Thank goodness baseball season is about to start.

Live by the jump shot, die by the jump shot. No Caron Butler= no chance in the playoffs... at least we get to watch the greatness of Dirk. RIP Bob Ortegal

He's 70. Geez, he should take time off because he's old.

I think Brad Davis did a pretty good job vs Ortegel & Skin.. Shouldn't be that hard to build chemistry. In my opinion Ortegel and Followill did not seem to be meshing this year.. Some very awkward moments on live TV.

ESPN Dallas just reported Ortegel and Mavs are "parting ways." kind of odd the way everything went down..

Have u been watching at all this year? This is not the "same old Mavs." The same old Mavs would have lost the important games against Miami/Boston/Orlando (even though they only lost one to Magic). Same old Mavs would have folded to Spurs (only lost because Dirk was out). If any season was going to be their season it will be this season! Spurs will eventually suffer some injuries and they will not be able to keep up the pace that they are with this team. No other team in the West will win vs the Mavs. All teams in East the Mavs can and will beat. Peja can easily replace Butler 15ppg and Roddy B just Adds more options.

Really? All Caron did was shoot jumpers.

I'm guessing all you do is watch Mavs games. The Spurs are the healthiest team in the leave and could give two fucks about beating the Mavs in the regular season. It's kind of funny how good the Spurs record is because they're not really into playoff mode yet. You're either 12 years old or female. I'm sure we can all appreciate your enthusiasm though.

Remember the 1st seeded Mavs that lost to the 8th seeded Golden State. it can happen once again.

Haha u. Right Butler was a jump shooter. He rarely took the ball to basket.

You're right. I didnt clarify in my haste to be first. Caron's value was in his defense & in addition, the Mav's live by the jump shot, die by the jump shot.
