UFC 127: Fitch Over Penn. Wait, That Was a Draw?

Ties are for Troy Dungan or calf ropin' or Oscar night or Mila Kunis' brother (cuz kissin' his sister would be bueno).

But UFC?

Watched UFC 127 with some buddies Saturday night and was entertained, but confused. Always figured in this manliest sports featuring bloody knockouts and tap-out surrenders they'd fight to the death -- or at least until someone won.

In the main event B.J. Penn rocked Jon Fitch with a couple of early takedowns, but with the way Fitch so dominated the third round I thought he clearly won the fight. So did Penn, who afterward in the ring basically called himself lucky to get a draw. For the final five minutes Fitch basically pinned and pummeled Penn with non-stop piston punches from close range.

It was like death by a thousand paper cuts. Except that -- in the three judges' opinion -- Penn didn't die.

I hate draws in soccer and boxing and, well, everything. Imagine a Miss America pageant with co-winners. A Super Bowl without overtime, ending in a tie. American Idol(s). It just feels so incomplete and unfulfilling.

It didn't, however, take away from an entertaining night in which we also learned that...

*England's Michael Bispring is a good fighter but a giant asshole. After beating Jorge Rivera, Bispring flipped off the crowd, spat at Rivera's corner and told his opponent to "go home, loser." Felt a little too much like scripted professional wrestling.

*German Dennis Siver should be an NFL running back. For three rounds George Sotiropoulos tried to tackle Siver and take their fight to the ground, but he couldn't do it. Amazing balance,  low center of gravity and a stubborn sticking to a game plan. Impressive.

*Goofiest dude of the night was Brian Ebersole, who beat Chris Lytle. Ebersole entered the ring with his chest hair shaved into an arrow pointing up toward his head, but then caught Lytle with a knee that almost knocked the veteran out.

*I can't wait for UFC 128.

I didn't see the fight, but from the descriptions, it's quite interesting to me because it sounds like they had a common problem with fights, but this time the judges weren't afraid to call out a dominant round when they saw one.

Every now and then, you'll get a fight like this, where 1 round clearly goes to 1 guy, another round clearly goes to the other, and the other round is a toss-up. Usually, then, the fight comes down to the toss-up round.

Instead, here, Fitch won round 3 so decisively that he was able to score a rare 10-8 round in the third. So, all the judges gave Penn round 1, and all the judges gave Fitch round three, but two judges gave Penn round 2 and Fitch a 10-8 3rd round.

This is big because, as RW said, he thought Fitch won, and I imagine a lot of people who aren't seriously into MMA would watch that fight and come out with the same conclusion. But, if it weren't for those 2 judges giving Fitch a 10-8 3rd round, what we would have had instead would be a BJ Penn win by split decision.

Well, well, well, welcome back Name that Dude Singing Like a Rolling Stone! Richie, I am glad you and Greggo are now on track with the fastest growing sport in the land. I will say that I hope this last PPV didn't wain your interest. IMO any UFC PPV that headlines Jon Fitch, a free sample of uppers should be sent out because it's a toss up who is the most boring fighter in the UFC, Jon Fitch or Jake Shields whom you will become familiar with shortly when he takes on GSP (who up until his last fight wasn't an overly exciting fighter himself). If you want to get totally engrossed in MMA tune into the Strikeforce heavyweight tourney that is currently under way where round two of the tourney will be a doozie. It's too long to fill in the blanks here but go to the website or read up on it on Cagepotato.com, MMAweekley.com or bloodyelbow.com. Anderson Silva and GSP will be everything that boxing isn't. Glad to be back and glad you are on board with the greatness of MMA and the UFC.

RW- If you judged the fight as a whole, Fitch certainly won. The fights are scored on a round by round basis, however. Penn won the first two 10-9 on two judges card but was beaten badly in the third, resulting in a rare 10-8 round for Fitch. Giving you 28-28 on two cards and thus a majority tie. Kind of an unsatisfying end, but makes sense if you are going by the scoring by round system.

Glad you enjoyed the fights RW, and glad to see some MMA coverage from a local writer.

Agree w/ you on Bisping, the dude takes his act of self-promotion via WWE tactics way too far. Loved seeing him get seperated from his senses by Hendo back @ UFC 100 - I hear he may get Belfort or Sonnen next... either one of which will likely stop him w/ strikes before he can spit on any cornermen of toss an illegal knee.

Speaking of Hendo, don't forget to check out Strikeforce this SAT as he fights Feijao for their LHW title. This is going to be a slugfest and I see no possible way is goes the scheduled 5 rds. 'Free' if you already have Showtime.

Also, free UFC Fight Night card on Versus this THURS featuring Diego Sanchez v Martin Kampmann. Should be a fun one

I hate to actually respond to kergo's trolling, but I mention that clown roughly 0 times a week.

He references me roughly five to ten times a week. The one time I actually argued with him he cried like a bitch.

He comes on here all the time under fake names, none of which are funny. He has lame conversations with himself.

Then there's the third-rate comedy of him talking about food and lakes. Last week even featured a bizarre episode where he trolled until Richie asked him what the deal was.

Doesn't that make you feel like a joke that as an adult someone else had to ask you what your problem was in a public forum? Does it make you feel like a joke that you have a weird obsession with an online alias for a person you don't know?

I would respond to you more often, but seriously, there is never a reason to. It's never funny. It's never insightful. It's lame every single time. Your posts are a step or two below a Fan caller. Your comments are what I would expect from Lacey Gee.

On acid.

I hope you are so delighted that I've responded to you that you were able to rub one off. But I tell you, if my joy in life was cooking, talking about lakes, talking about baseball in winter, and riding the coattails of someone else's online alias I would just tattoo "tool" on my head so people would know what they were getting into before talking to me.

Kidding, of course about the tattoo. I'd just kill myself.

Wow, what a mix.......karate and wrastlin'; with a touch of overt homo-ness. Spring training is going on RW! Do a report about MY bitchin', or Kinz broken wheel (he's good for 81 good games a year), or Napoli eating all the hot dogs on the buffet (yah, he'll hit 26 homers but his average will hover around the Mendoz line), or how they'll miss uncle Clint (big mistake). Really only RobM cares about this drivel. I'd rather you regale us with tales of pontoon boats, lake rats, ole ladies, cacklin' biotches w/ciggy breath, Walmart, travelin', Rich Mountain in Arkansas (SACRED SITE....2600 feet up, ahhhhh the castle in the sky!).

When you go on vacation, can I fill in for you?

The main event went almost exactly the way I thought it would. Penn took the first round, and then Fitch took over after that. Unfortunately, two of the judges did not see it that way, resulting in a tie.

It's actually the second UFC main event tie this year, as Gray Maynard and Frank Edgar fought to a draw in the lightweight title fight at the beginning of the year.

Bisping is a notorious douche bag. He really got under the skin of fans during his tenure as coach during a season of The Ultimate Fighter. At UFC 100 after that season, he was knocked out so hard by Dan Henderson that it looked like Bisping was dead.

UFC 128 should be even more entertaining than 127. There are a lot of exciting fighters on that card, and honestly, Dana White and Joe Silva tend to put on weak cards overseas like 127 was.

Kergs, how much did Uncle Clint get to be a headcoach? He was in the right place at the right time, and wouldve been welcomed back for sure...but how many coaches can you money whip? We needed the extra money for our new 16 mil dollar super-utility.

Kerg, Clint left to manage. It's not as if Nolan swatted him away like he was a snow monkey. While it's the Pirates, it's still the majors. Mostly.

Hate to gagree with Robm, but yeah I seem to remember the across the pond shows aren't very good..I didnt watch this one..paid 50 bucks for last months though (I like Bones) and make a card by card decision on whether not we buy one..

Actually, that was just one response because I know you've been wanting it. It's the only reason you mention me all the time (yet I never mention you).

It's like your my bitch or something. I may start calling you that from now on. Rob M's bitch. Whenever I post, I know you want me too far from side waiting to pick up the scraps.
