Now That the Super Bowl is Over, Let's Disqus. Olive Branch?

Olive Branch.jpg
Let me get this outta the way once and for all:

I'm short(ish). Bald(ing). And, since I don't adopt  you guys' system of surrendering to middle age but rather I try to combat it, I'm also douche(y). Yes, I work for a free newspaper and my radio station is No. 3 in the sports-talk ratings. And this just in: I make mistakes.

There. Feel better?

I stopped commenting on this here blog a while back because, frankly, the remarks had deteriorated into personal attacks and grade-school goofball "First, bitches" and fake identities having conversations with themselves. Not that it wasn't entertaining, just nothing really given-n-take about it.

But in the last two weeks I've received three heartfelt e-mails -- you know who you are -- both apologizing for the unfair personal attacks and inviting me to rejoin the conversation. The attacks don't bother me even a smidge, as you can't work in newspaper/and or radio without a thick skin. And the e-mails touched me.

So let's do this.

I've created a profile and will try to jump in daily. (By the way, I'm the one with the photo celebrating a wiffle ball homer to the heavens. Beware the knock-offs.) I also Tweet and keep up with Facebook, all the while every day planning and writing three blog items, researching and producing five hours of radio and squeezing in time to write a weekly Observer column and constructing four cover stories a year. It's rewarding, but also tremendously time-taxing.

Not that I'm complaining. I love both gigs and realize how fortunate I am. My blog numbers are high and my radio ratings are headed in the right direction.

What I'm saying is yes, I'll re-engage, while keepin' on keepin' on. When I created Sportatorium in 2007 it wasn't as a breaking news scroll or an aggregation of the day's events (there are sites with multiple staff writers for those types of things). I still feel today I provide some breaking news (like yesterday's Michael Vick key to the city item), but more so a unique view and strong opinion on intriguing topics, sports and otherwise. Or, you might just get a top 10 list about hot girls or a prediction that could either go astray or be spot on.

If you want to go to a chain restaurant there are plenty out there. Consider mine a non-traditional buffet. Monday, for example, I served up some Sam Merten as well. Deelish, no?

Some of you seem to hate my restaurant, yet come nibble daily anyway while yelling how much you despise the chef. That's cool, you're welcome any time.

Olive branch extended.

"I'm not trying to win Mr. Personality here, but I'm not the cocky asshole that I play in print and/or on radio. It's all entertainment, hopefully." - richie's reply to a comment

wait a sec, i thought u said ur NOT "phony".i believe u said "unique".

the bit of playing phony radio guy is an old bit.some do it well, while some (you)....not so much.

be original.it just might work.ur on afternoon drive with 100k watt blowtorch.that blowtorch should be used to attract listeners, not have them scrambling to punch out.

on 10-31-2010 u declared, "game mother F'n on!" in regards to a head-to-head battle vs the Hardline (all the while ignoring Galloway, mind u).

ITS TIME.time for you to hit that "reset" button.

Well isn't this sweet, I don't need an olive branch up in here. How about some quality content brah? Top ten lists are give-ups, qb ratings=give-ups..only thing "original" in the Sportatorium is Shitt's end. I like to hear your stories of large black men questioning your heteroness and quality of writing. Tell us more about your boyfriend/roomate/flavor of the month. Tell us insider mejia stuff. Tell us about what you want to do first, when you're tall enough to ride that specific ride. Don't care a bit what bar you hung out at last night, but would be interested in some unnamed sources takes on Bob Ortegal or Captain Mike Young. The reason we kick you in the nuts is because Merton doesn't mail in THIS job. I can't comment on your fine radio work, because I haven't listened to more than 10 minutes worth in the last 6 months..I gave y'all a try because of Greggo, but between your small bag of nothing and the girls and Armen..it was like listening to a Bizzaro world Mush Mouth and friends..without the funny.

RW, I think what you've done here, if for nothing else, will hopefully make people like me want to go back to my old ways, which is visting your blog on my daily trip through the 4 or 5 sites I like to read everyday. But, you will have to come to grasp that the content has slipped...I personally am willing to accept it won't be as good as it was when you started it full of steam, as long as not every entry is mailed in. However, my real suggestion, for whatever it's worth, is the cockiness (aka doucheyness) needs to be dialed down. As anyone can admit, the Hardline is prime for the picking and one of the reasons is that people are sick of Corby's cockiness, so they tune to Galloway, hear his cockiness too...if they switch to you, it's more of the same. Not saying you have to turn into some humble pie, opinionless baby, but find the happy medium. B/c I think people hear that, then also come here and this provides the outlet to tear you up, whereas the other afternoon shows don't provide that same outlet. You have a unique outlet w/ your radio show and daily blog, and cockiness has its limits that people will put up with, take away that element (like this blog entry as a good first step in that direction), and it could lead to something special. It seems you want to deny that part of your "presentation" (the blog and show), even though in one comment below you even say "I'm not the cocky asshole I play...", then later say you're also "not phony" you're "unique". Being a character that is already played (and, no offense, is played better by other characters) is not unique. So, get w/ Greggo, get w/ Gilbert, get w/ your editors here...b/c you certainly have the talent, the expertise and even the charisma to carry your presentation to higher limits (or, if not higher, perhaps of greater substance), but the cocky shock jock is tired. Just my opinion.

Actually, some of the comments were starting to turn me off of the blog, An occasional zinger towards RW here and there is tolerable. But the constant barrage of negative that the comments had become just made it a beating to visit regularly anymore. While I can agree that sometimes the blog posts here seemed 'mailed in,' I think most of us need to remember that this IS a BLOG....NOT a column. The format, by its very nature, is much more informal and free style. I think the best suggestion yet, Richie, is that you should prominently feature a link to your weekly feature column here on your blog. I think most of your blog readers miss out on your weekly column as there are never many comments posted on your column. Interacting with your readers should make things much more interesting. .

You gotta hand it to Richie for having this blog, with all the nutt-kicking going on. I've got to admit, I could'nt come up with blog material everyday and do a 5 hour show, btw, I think 5 hrs might be overkill. Comments can be a little crass at times, but think it mostly good natured. Think of it as a daily roast!

aboutschmidt
aboutschmidt

Richie, you are capable of great writing and I think you are not given enough credit for that. I think when you provide good sports posts the comments generally stick to the topic and let's us vent or throw some HSOs about whatever sports point. Sometimes, like the Josh Hamilton's In the Hospital post awhile back, where it sure sounded like you were wondering if he'd fallen off the wagon, the posts can seem a bit intentionally provocative or off base.

Richie, you should search for a post you did about three weeks back titled, "With an Unrealistic Shot at Reaching the Summit, the Mavs Have Stopped Climbing". There are posts from both points of view about this blog, some the same snarkiness as usual, others more thought out. I do think the attitude was a bit nicer and civil for a couple days past those posts, but it didn't last. I do think the better the blog posts and content the more interesting and respectful the blog comments are, as simple as that sounds.

I'm glad you're diving back in to the comments and hopefully the commenters can be respectful and take that olive branch. Now let's all have a fun sportsy good time.

your blogging is far superior than your radio show.if that hurts your feelings, then (as tony romo so eloquently put it) "i'm sorry for NOT being sorry".

i strongly detect you're concerned that ppl mustn't dig u too much based on comments here and your poor radio ratings.suggestion:try not to be an ass all the time on the airwaves and perhaps a little chemistry can develop b/w u and the listener.we all know sometimes some must "play" radio, but in your case its way too phony and easily detected.thus the deaf ears from the metroplex masses.

I have ready this blog since its inception & I can honestly say I haven't taken the time to comment nor taken much time to read the comments due to the yuck monkey-ness. I enjoy a Sam Merton piece. I also enjoy a Richie Whitt piece. Both have their merits- the former being more newsy & the latter more blog-like. I enjoy The Ticket & RAGE whenever I have the chance or the time to listen. The Sportatorium, besides being named after a hallowed (if smoke-filled) Metroplex venue, brings a little of that Metroplex to me now that I live way out in Albuquerque. Thanks, RW.

I used to comment regularly on this site under a different alias.. Frankly, it became boring and juvenile because of the folks who choose this site to show their ignorance and lack of anything that approaches civility. First of all, thank you three people who sent Richie e-mails. Very cool.

Secondly, I really enjoy calling Richie short, gay, douchey, balding, etc. But I haven't had the heart to call him names too much recently because the attacks on him on both a professional and personal level had gotten unacceptable. Some of the comments actually made me feel sick to my stomach, to think people would act with such incivility.

Thirdly, I always get the feeling that even though Richie tolerates me, he really hopes I'll end up in "Dead and Gone." (By the way, Richie, if I die while you're still on the air, I want the full Dead and Gone treatment -- the insults, the tasteless audio, the inaccurate facts, and most importantly, a "big tallywhacker" drop. You know you noticed.)

Finally, I really want Richie to succeed. He's a nice guy. I think Richie sees himself as a writer more than a radio guy, and I thought it was shitty to see his blog get overrun by the fake names, the gimmicks, and the completely off-topic comments. I also think it's shitty when people clamor for Sam Merten. I really enjoy reading what both guys have to say, and I think it was pretty low class for people to act like one had to be rejected for the other.

I'm all for some real discussion to make this blog better, and yeah, yesterday's Vick story was fairly big breaking news. It was also covered FAR more thoroughly by Unfair Park. I think it's embarrassing for DC9 when Unfair Park bests them on a story, and same for what little I read of CoA. The point is, I don't mind the top 10 lists and the small odds and ends when there's at least 1 legitimate article posted throughout the day. But compare Sam's MY article to your "Signing Day" article - even though one story is more fact versus opinion, at the end of the article, one leaves you wanting to read more, and one leaves you feeling dumber.

The stupid bashing, particularly the bashing that has to do with personal taste in talk radio and nothing to do with the DO, isn't helping anything either. But the bashing exists for a reason, Whitt - and though I am a fan of RAGE, I'm anything but of the Sportatorium. So don't give me "I'm a busy man" - be a journalist and write thought-provoking words, or don't write. If your attention span is only 140 characters, then stick to twitter, but don't insult the intelligence of your readers by "breaking" news in the form of a couple of hastily written sentences.

When I first started reading this blog this past summer I asked aloud, "whats up with everyone kicking RW in the nards?" I respect this column as a place for like minded yuck monkeyish folks to gather and kick their sports ideas around. RW how about links to your Observer column? One of my all time favorite stories was how Troy Aikman once called your phone on an old tape machine & read from the bible. I still wear my hat backwards, I guess that makes me douchy too...

Im still here, some stories suck some are good but Im just a reader so it shouldnt matter until the editors start thinking your shit sucks. I used to enjoy your banter on here which was mostly on your whitts end but we've certainly missed you lately. It was like you would start a fire and run. anyways, I miss all the ghosts, they were a funny bit and I think we all pulled that one off well but it ran it course. Heres to hopin we can all get along

Mishon

The whole "First, bitches" was actually pretty cool when I started it, but once everyone else started copying me, it really just got stupid pretty quick and brought this blog down. But anyway....the only time I ever knock you RW is when I feel like you are not giving your all to this blog (which has been very apaprent recently), how horrible you are at making picks (Cowboys to the Super Bowl, Rangers win the World Series in 5 games), and when I feel like you choose a side of an arguement just to counter Greggo's arguement even though you really agree with Greggo (it's just annoying).

I don't ever make personal attacks or attacks on the Fan, except for Jagger/Henson/Jasmine/Lacy G./Sybil/Armen/Arnie...but I can't help making fun of them b/c they all really do suck, but I do like listening to you and Greggo and I do listen most days.

But as long as you provide good content on this here blog I have no issues with you. I can't say I will stop making fun of your predictions...you just suck so bad at it.

Scruffygeist
Scruffygeist

I'll try to sum up my own personal opinion simply. We want this little bloggie thing to do well. I want compelling content to comment on so I can be my own smartass self, write a little something, and enjoy a discussion. It's the internet, of course there will be countless kicks in the nuts aimed in all directions. We've all had damn good discussions here before, and we've all also contributed to less-than-good discussions.

I like it here far more than trying to comment at the daily's site. Gawd, it sucks over there. So I've been a whiny bitch around here because I want to be able to completely ignore their crappy site. I just want some quality seeds to a discussion. QB ratings don't do that, Top 10s rarely seem to either. Bring the heat, Whitt. No 85 mph fastballs if your arm is capable of 95.

You'll get our A game if we get yours. I personally promise that for myself, at least.

PPM Dont Lie
PPM Dont Lie

i recall a post on this hear blog which insinuated that ktck's high ratings may have been the result of cooking books while using the former diary-based method.the author of that post championed the new PPM method as a more accurate account of radio ratings and foreshadowed a decline in ktck's #s.

the results?:PPM showed that ktck's ratings were, in fact, higher than they ever were when recorded via the diary-based method of recording ratings.the exact opposite of what that author of the blog post predicted.

meanwhile, what PPM does show is a nose dive in his show's ratings since taking over pm drive.

Hey, you're exactly the guy I was thinking of when I made the restaurant analogy. You hate my cooking but you eat here every day while slinging out complaints. Weird.

I'm even going to respond to you. For a while. We'll see where this goes. So, do me a favor. Go back and read the opening paragraph to this blog entry. You did read it, right? What part of that sounds arrogant? I in no way think I'm better than everyone else. I am, however, very thankful that my radio boss thinks a tad more highly of my work than you do. I've been doing Top 10s since, literally, Day 1 of this blog. May not be your fave, but I get to hit the same topic from several different directions. When I'm watching an event with my buddies we're all over the map and I try to transfer that in here to Cowboys games, etc. If you want a stat-heavy breakdown I'm sure you can find that on the net, but until there is an overwhelming cry for it here I'm gonna keep offering an alternative.

Thanks, yes. And one thing I left out, is I think RW assumes readers hear his show or vice versa, so he will save content here to share on the show. However that is not the case...or even in the instances it is, it's ok to have the thought in print and radio. Use this space to elaborate on a point from the show, thus creating better content. Just my opinion.
