Blake Griffin Dunks Over a Car, Wins Bogus Contest

I totally recognize that Blake Griffin is the shit. His in-game dunking has made must-see TV out of LA Clippers' games. And you'd think that a dude who jumps over a car should automatically win the NBA's All-Star Slam Dunk contest.

But I watched a very entertaining dunk competition Saturday night and there's no way Blake was the best dunker. Of course, I didn't text in my vote so screw me.

First of all, Serge Ibaka took off from behind the free-throw - you hear that Dr. J and Air Jordan and Brent Barry? - for a flying dunk. And then JaVale McGee performed the most amazing dunk(s) I've ever seen.

Blake jumping over the hood of a Kia is nice and all, but how do you not give the trophy to a guy who dunks one ball left-handed while almost simultaneously dunking another ball right-handed after throwing it off the backboard of the first basket a good seven feet apart?

As for Ibaka's leap, it was better than Air Jordan's legendary flight. No?

And, for what it's worth, did you know that the only two Mavericks ever in the Slam Dunk contest were Michael Finley (1997) and Tony Dumas, he of the infamous oh-for-three showing in 1995 in Phoenix?

Oh.. anyone remember the much-hyped Tony Dumas missed dunk? Takes my back to a time in the NBA where we thought if a guy could dunk, he deserved to be a first round pick.

Thats the thing....If somehow you could have no elimination rounds and just give a guy 4 of his best successful dunks, and then let him look at the tape and pick his 2 best, then judge each guy's 2 best from replay, but the judges see the whole process, it would be very fair. I saw a video on NBA TV on Lost Dunks this weekend that showed the early round dunks of eventual losers and the results were that by far the best dunks and most inventive dunks are people's first dunks. Kind of like the Josh Hamilton Home Run Derby loss. On another note, its not the fact that the guy leaped farther than Jordan or Dr. J by a foot, its just that that particular dunk has been done to death. It won't be impressive again until someone does it from the 3 point line.

Must've been watching something totally different from what I watched because I think the dunk contest is painful to watch. Most of the guys try their dunks 3, 4, or 5 times before they are finally able to make the dunk. And, all the bits, such as bringing the little kid out on the court looking for his stuffed animals, is totally ridiculous. I'm a Blake Griffin fan but, the dunk with the car and the church choir was dumb. Charles Barkley said it best, "If you have a pretty girl if she dumb it don't matter." Well said Charles.

TNT damned near missed with last RedHulk dunk..damn circle jerk..if McGee coulda made a dunk in 1 or 2 attempts he wouldve won..but I liked the jump over the small import with a choir playing while thinking of burning wagons back in the day dunk.

Michael dribbled. You really think Serge's was more impressive?

The dunks in the contest were great, but the judging sucks. Blake Griffin had the hype, and he won. That's unfortunate.

Michael Finley in the dunk contest...boy, oh, boy, who can forget that debacle? He did a cartwheel (it failed) and then tried to dunk (but failed).

Great contest this year. My only thing about the free throw line and comparing them is Ibaka is 6'10, looks about 7', he's going to have more reach than Jordan. One dunk doesn't win it all for you though and in my mind I penalized Ibaka for the stupid stuffed animal dunk. You can't just miss and then set it up again. Worst acting ever. He should have just given the animal to the kid and did another dunk.
