Thumbs Up: Adrian Beltre Makes the Texas Rangers Better

The race is on today. Which big announcement/press conference will arrive first:

The Dallas Cowboys hiring Jason Garrett or the Texas Rangers signing Adrian Beltre?

Let's go with Beltre, as the free-agent third baseman and agent Scott Boras arrived in town last night and agreed to a five-year, $80 million contract that could include a sixth year and definitely gives Rangers fans some positive off-season news after fanning on pitchers Cliff Lee and Zack Greinke.

Beltre is an upgrade from Michael Young. He's three years younger with a Gold Glove in the field and more average and power at the plate. He's got some idiosyncrasies to his make-up -- for the longest time he didn't wear a cup and don't dare touch his head -- and there are nagging rumors about him being an iffy teammate, but the dude can yank the ball around the yard. In 2004, he hit 48 homers for the Dodgers and finished second in the MVP race and last year in Boston he led the AL with 49 doubles.

Assuming Young will graciously accept his demotion to designated hitter, the Rangers' Opening Day lineup could look thusly:

SS Elvis Andrus

DH Michael Young

LF Josh Hamilton

3B Adrian Beltre

RF Nelson Cruz

2B Ian Kinsler

1B Mitch Moreland

C Yorvit Torrealba

CF Julio Borbon

That lineup should be comaprable, if not better, than the one that pushed Texas to last season's World Series. It's basically Beltre and Torrealba instead of Vladimir Guerrero and Bengie Molina.

Advantage 2011. I think.

Would I rather the Rangers go to spring training with Lee and Guerrero rather than Beltre and Brandon Webb? Of course. But at least for today -- for a change this winter -- the Rangers got better.

"BIG ANNOUNCMENT" !? Really. I think this is the first bad move that Ryan/Greenberg group has made. It stinks of making a trade just to make a trade. Heck, I'm going over to the Rangers office tommorrow, and see if they'll give me 200 bucks for a box full of rocks and shiny turds. Jeeshhh, you could have had Ty Wiggington for half the price.....and then you'd have someone on your team thats both reasonably priced, and looks like a piggy. You people just wait until he's hitting 240 and has 17 homers, you'll be begging for Hammerin' Hank to come back, or Vlad. How is this team better?

BTW, you morons bashing Clee, cease and desist; this is what happens when you play in the big leagues. The same people that feel snubbed by his desire to play in Philly would be the first of folks bashing him four years into this contract, when he's pitching 100 innings for 11 wins, and making 20+ million.

ps-On a quick note, the Kerg's has noticed a vast amount of "shelf #sses" while perusing the aisles of his local Walmart as of late. Why, just the other day I was hiding behind the camping section and making bird noises, to distract the guy that works in the gun section, and this lady with a "Higgins Butt" knocked me over and sent me spiraling into the porti stoves. The guy that works in the gun section laughed and pointed at me, because he hates me. I don't know why? Who doesn't enjoy having animal noises directed at them 5 times a week?

pss-The other day I went into my local Taco Bu$no and there were no turds floating in the turlet and the place was clean? What gives? Nobody cackling in broken spanish about f'ing someones mom. Hmmmmm? I asked for napkins and actually received them.

INCREDIBLE-in Boston (and as a Sawx fan) they couldn't get him out of town fast enough....but here, he makes the team better!? Good luck. He's good for 18 homers and 78 RBI's. Great glove-yes, but not worth the money. They were calling this a "big free agent splash" on local radio. REALLY? Who gives an S? The Rangers were better off with Vlad as DH and Mike at Third, and Mike is F'ing brutal at third. Ole' city, but not worth paying Beltre all that money-stupid. The Sox basically let Beltre go for Jed Lowrie ($400,000.). Sox win this deal.

ps-could have spent that money on an innings eater

This seems like the Rangers getting antsy with some money they had and using it a bit irresponsibly. Beltre's other two offers prior to this potentially $96 million deal ($16 mil per season) was the As offer of $76 million for 6 years ($12.6 mil per season) or the Angels offer of $70 million for 5 years ($14 million annually). It seems a bit needless to throw out $20-26 million additionally for a guy that teams were reluctant to accommodate with Boras' huge asking price. Conventional baseball wisdom is player's stats start to trail off in their early-mid 30s, and Beltre will be 32 opening day and could be 37 still in a Rangers uniform.

We'll definitely take him over Michael at 3rd, but as others have noted, he's basically going on hype after 2 big free agent seasons in a 13 season career. Why not save this wad of cash for a true elite slugger like Prince Fielder who will hit free agency next season at 28 years old? I imagine he will cost more to sign, but at least he's very consistent as an on-base machine and has shown true elite power. This could be another Chan Ho deal and the Rangers really went above and beyond to accommodate Boras if the rumored offers from the As and Angels are accurate.

The 6th year only becomes guaranteed if he hits certain performance thresholds. If he isn't performing in his late 30s, the Rangers are off the hook.

Why do some of you get so caught up in the money? You don't write the checks and there's no cap in baseball. The team has given no indication this eats up the entire budget for players for the next 5 years. Chill.

Ticket/merchandise/parking prices could be affected by salaries and team spending budgets absolutely are. While their payrolls are much higher, just look at what big bad contracts have done to the Mets and Cubs. Texas isn't in that area, but if it plans to keep a lot of the young talent currently on the team for a long time it's not unreasonable to think the Rangers could be well over $100 in payroll within the next few years.

I don't think it's unreasonable to wish a team is smart about long term contracts, and giving elite money to a player who's only been elite in 2 seasons of his career seems a bit wishful thinking to me. I hope I am wrong. Hopefully this deal will not hamper keeping some of the current team assets under contract long term.

Beltre is a career .275 hitter, .264 if you take away his two free agency years. I'd be very surprised if he hit for a higher average than Michael Young.

I think this is an okay move because it shores up the defense which in turn makes the pitching better. This should please Tommy Hunter as much as anyone. But Beltre may wear thin long before these five years are up.

I like the Beltre signing for his glove more than his bat. Anything more than .280 and 25 HRs will be gravy. His defense alone will help our starters, especially guys who put it in play a lot like Big Game Hunter and The Dutch Oven.

Yes, the Rangers are better today than they were yesterday, but they could have been so much better if they weren't so cheap and gave me my years and money!

Hey cliff take you $25 mil a year and fuck off. Enjoy philly and leave us alone, and when we make the playoffs and your stud pitching staff is sitting home in October, maybe you can come catch a game in our 85 degree weather as opposed to shoveling snow.

You forgot to mention that he spared Seattle to death. This guy might not even be an upgrade to Vlad.

Agree. The Rangers are better today than they were yesterday.

I'm curious where Vlad is going to end up.

Any truth to the Graza to the Cubs rumor I keep hearing? Did the Rangers not make a run for Garza since they signed Webb?

How many days til Spring Training? I can't wait!
