Texas Rangers Swear They're Not Trading Michael Young

Wanted answers as to yesterday's item about where Michael Young might fit into the Texas Rangers' plan in the wake of the recent acquisitions of Adrian Beltre and Mike Napoli.

Young is slated for utility infielder duty, maybe some first base and, of course, DH. But he says DHing isn't a permanent move while the Rangers say Napoli will be the first-base backup to Mitch Moreland.

During yesterday's trip to Austin to show off their AL championship trophy to Texas lawmakers, manager Ron Washington said ...

"He's a key producer on this team. Michael is going to play and be a big part of what we're doing. We need him in the lineup, and he'll be there. This doesn't change that."

What did general manager Jon Daniels say about Young on 105.3 The Fan?

"We have no plans to trade Michael. We don't have any blockbusters in the works. Michael is going to be a big part of this team and the Napoli trade does not impact that."

I know things (injuries, etc.) happen in baseball. A year ago, for example, Texas was counting on Scott Feldman and Rich Harden at the top of the pitching rotation. But Young has moved from second to short to third to DH and now to an even further reduced role into part-time DH and backup backup to Andres Blanco? Young is one of the greatest teammates in the history of Dallas-Fort Worth, but this shoving aside isn't pretty.

Young is guaranteed $16 million over the next three years, so a trade is difficult. But doesn't it seem like suddenly the long-time face of the franchise isn't a good fit here anymore?

"What did general manager Jon Daniels say about Young on 105.3 The Fan?"

I asked around if anyone knew the answer, the confused looks and replies of "What is The Fan?" made me give up.

As for Young...a lot of hate for MY is someone disheartening. I know I was as upset as anyone at his lackluster play in the playoffs, but ultimately, he represented all that was right on a team that was run all wrong. He was the glue in the clubhouse when the likes of ARod, Soriano, Padilla, Cordero, etc etc were trying to keep it separated. In 2004, he was the leader of the team that won 15-20 games more than they should have. And the fact is, it's not like he's demanding a trade, criticizing the front office's moves, or throwing teammates under the bus. He said that he wants to play as much as possible. Am I missing what is so wrong w/ this? Beltre said MY was one of the first players he talked to. To me, he's proving to further his status as a good guy. I don't harbour ill will towards him b/c the man wants to play.

Did Jeter fielding and batting for crap help the Yankees? Did Manny fielding and batting for crap help the Dodgers? Guys get old. That's no newsflash. Beltre was a signing that helps the team. Fielding, pitching, and offense. Michael Young has to adapt because of it. Unfortunate? Slightly, but like it's been stated, dude is getting paid. He got his reward contract for being a good soldier and a very good player. But he's not getting younger, and he's not going to get less Dorn-like at third.

Napoli strengthens the bench.Young as a DH/super utility guy does too. If he doesn't like it, that sucks, but he still gets that money, it's not all bad for him.

Honestly, this seems like nothing more than a weak attempt at a post built around trying to brag that the former flagship still got an interview, considering Daniels and Richie added no new information of any value we didn't already know.

Richie's been awfully hard on the Rangers lately.

"What did general manager Jon Daniels say about Young on 105.3 The Fan?"Thanks for answering that for us! We're all Ticket lemmings, so obviously we don't listen to your crappy station.

I would expect to see MY moved in spring training..we kick in 5 mil a year and pick up a bullpen arm and a couple of AA kiddoes..it'll all work out folks, because he's not playing 3b anymore.

Look, the Rangers are building a winner for once, this isnt the franchise of feel good stories and pat you on the back becasue you are a good guy. Sit his ass on the bench pay the 16 mil and STFU. If he DH's cool, but the media need to let this crap go.

Young's #s for a DH aren't very strong but he's also insurance in case somebody in the infield gets hurt. The Rockies have made it known they're interested but don't have the money. Could 1B Todd Helton be a realistic swap? I am a bit confused on the money he's owed through 2013, but if the teams made the money line up I wonder if it could be possible.

Otherwise, unless the Rangers want to eat a lot of the dough, their best bet is probably either keeping Young as an expensive DH or dealing him for another bad contract (like Helton's) elsewhere.

Couldn't agree with McDoom more. The fact of the matter is the Rangers have made Michael a very very very rich man and are continuing to make him rich. He should do whatever they ask of him, which he has. It's the media that keeps beating the Michael is being msitreated drum. If he was really that unhappy with what was going on, he would demand to be traded, which he hasn't. He has said on a few ocassions that he wants to be a Texas Ranger and he will do what is best for the team. So please, enough with this shit already.

Didn't Michael Young's decreased role get beat to death in this blog a month ago?

Like Greggo said, time is indifferent in baseball. It doesn't matter if you were here for the lean years and now the team is good. He got a great contract and he's the face of the franchise. The thing that sucks is that the Rangers can't get anything for him and there isn't a true spot for him on this team. He is a liability in the infield, even at 1st I believe he would be. Hell, they might as well just ask him to play catcher now. He probably has a decent shot there.

I don’t care if it’s the “face of the franchise” or the 25th man on the roster. Young is being moved from the field to a diminished role because his skills are declining. He’s a piss poor fielder. Yes, he should be Andres Blanco’s UIF backup because Blanco can field 2B, SS, and 3B better than Young. Yes, Napoli will take away ABs from Young because he hits lefthanders better. The media handwringing over the perceived poor treatment of Mike Young is really tiresome. The guy is still getting paid $48M over the next three years. And if he’s really unhappy, then he should demand a trade, you know like he did when he got all butthurt when they told him they were going to move him to 3B and bring up Elvis at SS.

I'm shocked they paid him as much as they did. Pudge was the face of the franchise and didn't get the payday that Young did. He should be happy with that.

Blanco looks like he might could play every day for some smaller market team. I am not sure of his fit here because of his lack of base stealing proficiency. One of the missing pieces on this team now is a base runner off of the bench (maybe Murphy on one of his nights off against LHP or mabee German if he proves value enough to stick on the roster). With all of the flexibility provided by Napoli, a late inning spark on the base paths would fit nicely.
