Rooney Rule or Not, Jason Garrett Needs to Hire a Black Receivers Coach

This isn't shtick in advance of Monday's annual observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It's about the Dallas Cowboys' locker room chemistry out at Valley Ranch.

Ray Sherman was a respected voice and, at times, yes, a coddling sounding board among the team's black players. Now that he's gone, new head coach Jason Garrett's replacement selection is, I believe, extremely important.

I've been told that receiver Dez Bryant nodded off in meetings more than a few times this season and that he never learned the entire playbook, only to be pardoned by Sherman. The receivers coach, who will not be back next season after his contract expired last week, was once a buffer between Terrell Owens and trouble and he created a weekly Thursday bitch session called "Keep It Real" for receivers to vent their frustrations.

I can tell you from talking to players that there was somewhat of a divide on Garrett along racial lines.

While Wade Phillips and his doting granddad approach were almost universally embraced, Garrett and his immediate injection of discipline and accountability -- not to mention full-pads practices -- rubbed some players the wrong way.

There were four assistant coaches with expiring contracts this off-season: Sherman, tight ends coach John Garrett, kicking coach Chris Boniol and quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson. While John Garrett is interviewing for the offensive coordinator job with the Miami Dolphins and Wilson and Boniol are expected to be retained by Jason Garrett, the Sherman vacancy needs to be handled correctly.

You cannot downplay the importance of team chemistry and locker-room harmony.

For now Skip Peete (running backs) and Brett Maxie (safeties) are on Garrett's staff as the lone black assistants. There needs to be a strong third voice.

The Cowboys will soon hire a new defensive coordinator and new receivers coach. Watch these moves carefully. I know the players will be.

Screw the black/white/ whatever bs, they just need a coach that will hold these guys accountable. Besides the Cowboys need to get one of those Stokley/Welker type of wideouts who can go over the middle and help out Romo.

I think it's too much to say that the wide receivers coach needs to be black. I do agree that there seems to be a racial divide in the Dallas Cowboys locker room, and I do think there should be black coaches on the staff, but I would not go as far as to say one black coach must be replaced with another.

I know this isn't on the radar, but I think Dave Campo should be out and George Teague should be in. He currently coaches high school in the Dallas area, and he may have done some college coaching, but I don't remember.

Really, I'm just using Teague as an example. Bringing in a black coach with ties to the Dallas community or one that has been a player and has a strong voice but still fits Garrett's style would be a good thing.

Hopefully, Jason will not go through with his plan to start bringing women into the locker room and telling them to "look at those beautiful black bodies."

You honky's wouldn't understand, it's a black thang.

So Richie... What color does the new Defensive Coordinator need to be ? I mean, a white guy is leaving the post, but could we plug a black dude in there and then maybe work a white guy into the receiver coach role or does it have to be white guy in white guy's role and black guy in black guy's role ?

And so....I suppose that if white players were unhappy with a black coach because his "introducing discipline and accountability rubbed them the wrong way", then your opinion would be that the organization should cave in to those players and hire a white guy?

Either way, what a lousy, lousy message to send to your team that already has more than enough ego and discipline issues as it is. Why not just put the players in charge and not have any coaches, I am sure that would work out just as well.

The other two posts today were trash, but I think you all are being unfair to Richie here. He comes with an unpopular thesis and no doubt race-baity title, but backs up his argument with examples. He even says he has talked directly with players who have said there was a racial divide. (perhaps Jay Ratliff who had a show with Richie and Greggo throughout the season?) Remember the fallout from T.O./Crayton/Roy Williams and several players on defense vs Romo and Witten (supposedly scripting plays together, which is silly, but an issue in T.O.'s last season with the club) where it was abundantly reported there was a racial rift in the locker room? In a perfect world this wouldn't be an issue, but to say teams don't consider stuff like this is wide-eyed naive.

A tasteless, ominous post suggesting Hamilton may have fallen off the wagon and thinking Kim Kardashian is hot and deciding to post about it with little connection to anything are one thing, but at least there is some substance and potential truth to this post. And for the Sportatorium that's better than what we usually get.

Please do relieve Richie and give us Sam. I can't decide if this was more dumb or more bigot in nature. Perhaps both in the extreme.

Did you seriously just suggest the Cowboys hire a black wide receivers coach because that will make the black players happy?

Do you know for a fact that the Cowboys' wide receivers are racist, or do you just get a vibe?

Just remember ... these players have shown us that their happiness and contentment means 6-10 seasons .... so the Cowboys MUST do the opposite of what you suggest ---> hire an ALBINO who only wears all white clothes, shoes, underwear, and accessories!

Maybe a Mexican coach would be good for the recievers. This way when they nod off in a meeting they can tell their boy they're taking a siesta.

Hey Ritchie, what about a mulatto? Would the players be willing to accept that? Please look into it and let us know. Thanks.

So discipline and accountability is a white thang?

Nice racism there Richie.

Yes, he needs to hire another WR coach that will pardon players for sleeping in meetings and not learning the playbook. What could go wrong?

I think the quarterbacks coach needs to be Asian, to satisfy the Kristy Yang rule.

Way to kick RW in the nuts everyone-GOOD JOB!

It is archaic to think that the Cowboys have to go get a black coach to appeal to its black players. In addition, isnt that insulting to the black players?

Are you suggesting that the players are racists and cannot follow the lead of a coach who isn't black?

Here's an idea, who gives a shit if the players aren't on board with the new regime. If they are not rowing the same direction as everyone else, move them out!

We need some new voices in the locker room and it shouldn't make a difference what color they are. Diva receivers are always coddled, bring in an ass kicker and whip that group into shape.

Besides, Bob Sturm taught us that racism is good....

RW, you are an idiot..........After watching the performance of the wide receivers this year, they need a foot up their asses, not a "keep it real" ass kisser..........What a buffoon.......

So, players arent going to listen to white coaches? Wow. Wow. I minorly see where you're coming from, did Sherman decline to stay or was he told to go? I'd like some more reporterly type work done. Because basically, you're saying Steve Largent wouldn't be a good coach for them? Or insert whatever white or mexican guy. If we're talking Drew Pearson, I'm in.

You are an idiot, Richie. With your radio show tanking, your blog sucking, you decide to do this kind of schtick? This post and the last post are proof that you need to be relieved of your duties. Bring back Sam Merten.

Here's a concept: The players can nut up, get over it, and pay attention to whoever Garrett decides is the right coach for HIM, or they can attempt to find gainful employment somewhere else that pays them the kind of money they think they deserve.

Egotistical, stupid players will respond best to a guy who won't tolerate their bullshit. If not, they can whine their way out the door.

Richie's just being a white JJT now. Nothing but stupid, flip-flopping, baiting drivel. Kergo, hit us with a recipe, we need an injection of something worthwhile.

"While Wade Phillips and his doting grandad approach was almost universally embraced"

Which, of course, worked out so well....

Seriously dude, are you putting any effort into this anymore?

You follow up that supremely dumb, clickbait post on Josh Hamilton with one that's even dumber and more clickbait-y. Bravo. Welcome to the Trollatorium.
