Josh Hamilton Showing Significant Improvement?

Yes there's a question mark in that headline, because -- as always -- I'm a little confused.

On Tuesday we got this press release from your Texas Rangers about star slugger and American League Most Valuable Player Josh Hamilton:

Arlington, Texas--Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was diagnosed on Monday with an early case of pneumonia. He is currently being treated at a local hospital and is expected to be released within the next 24 hours. Josh should be able to resume his conditioning and baseball activities within the next several days.

The Hamilton family thanks everyone for respecting their privacy at this time.

Cool. No biggie. Raises a red flag about weakened immune deficiency via years of substance abuse, but if he's going to be released from the hospital the next day then it's really nothing. Carry on.

Right?

Then yesterday, we get this update on Josh's condition:

Arlington, Texas--Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is showing significant improvement in his condition after being diagnosed on Monday with an early case of pneumonia. He remains at a local hospital while he continues to be treated in order to accelerate his full recovery, and he is expected to be released by the weekend. Josh should be able to resume his conditioning and baseball activities within a few days after his release.

The Hamilton family thanks everyone for respecting their privacy at this time.

Wait. What the what?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're supposed to be released from the hospital in 24 hours but the doctors change it to at least 72 hours that's not called "significant improvement." Wouldn't significant improvement result in getting released earlier than expected? Isn't what's happening the definition of a setback?

Again, I love Josh as a player. Respect the hell out of him as a person.

I just don't like being jerked around. Don't try to sell us "Great news! Josh is doing so well that he's staying in the hospital two days longer than originally planned!" because we're smarter than that.

And as fans we deserve better.

I just sense something fishy here. Blindly believe what you're told if you wish, but was I right about Ted Williams the golden-throated fraud or was I right? Sure enough, his story was too good to be true.

If the Rangers were to resign Hamilton longterm, what kind of money do you all feel comfortable giving him? If he demands upwards of $20 million a season for 5+ years do we oblige? I think the Rangers are VERY uneasy about anything too long term with his past and relapse a couple seasons ago and I am curious how contract talks play out.

On a different note, I heard on RAGE yesterday they briefly mention the Rangers had the chance to get Matt Garza from the Rays. I'm disappointed the Rangers didn't push harder for this deal to get done even though I think they were offering a very strong proposal.

According to Peter Gammons, the Rangers were offering Derek Holland, Engel Beltre, Frankie Francisco and I heard Greggo and Richie mention Mitch Moreland (who Greggo confusingly compared to 1B stud Adrian Gonzalez). Apparently the Cubs offered a catcher in their system, Robinson Chirinos, who the Rangers tried to acquire from them for Chris Davis to put in their own package. Ultimately the Cubs won out, but I think the Rangers offered quite a bit. Maybe Tampa Bay wanted Chirinos and he was the difference to them. Or maybe they didn't want to potentially face Garza in the AL postseason again and preferred to move him to the other league.

Also, a couple weeks back a poster here (Ghost of scott maybe?) threw out the trade hypothetical of Michael Young to the Cubs for Carlos Zambrano. I think this is a pretty interesting idea and one that has been growing on me. It gives both teams something they're looking for and makes sense, even the crappy contracts kind of line up. Both players have had some issues with their teams as well and I think would be open to waiving their no trade clauses (Young for having his role changed a few times, and potentially a much lesser role if the team signs Thome as a split time DH as rumored, and Zambrano for clashing with management and front office with his outbursts. A definite change of scenery candidate).

Get off the sick.

People die from pneumonia. Find some evidence that he is actually back on the crack pipe, had an extended bender or got whacked in the head with a golf club and it would lend some credence to your speculations.

Non-story.

readers,

its a bit to drive up comments.he will use this on the Tardline later in hopes of driving up #s.

you know whats astonishingly sad?an inebriated Jake Z & T.C.'s podcast from their apt living room gets better #s than richie's show.just think if Jake Z & TC had a 100k watts signal and didnt have to borrow Danny's mic?

richie, your on-air partner is an addict.didnt you and he take offense when ppl doubted when greggo was "sick" and speculating he was back snorting lines off toilet lids?guilty.what ever happened to greggo's bold claims of "i'll take a drug test" upon returning from a week's absence?

why on earth would you open yourself (and greggo) up to such criticism of doubting a recovering addict when you work with one???

perhaps you know 1st hand your partner is using again and suddenly you've become jaded and think ALL addicts will fall off the wagon.

the bottomline is that josh is tested for drugs on a regular basis including the off season.the same cant be said about greggo.

and IF josh were to ever fall off the wagon, at least he's still a young man not yet 30 unlike greggo who is 50+.

I'm done reading your garbage. If you're not trying to make something out of nothing, you're beating your chest with "Hey, I predicted this" bravado. You're a worthless tool.

Dude is sick Richie, drop it already. You don't magically get better in a day after getting pneumonia. Doctors will say you'll be better in a couple days, but sometimes it changes to 5 days, it just happens.

1. Pneumonia is nothing to shake a stick at. Better for him to be monitored by doctors than risk anything.

2. The Rangers have always been cryptic when it comes to injury/illness reports. They're like a hockey team or the Patriots. Every time Kinsler has missed 6 weeks it started with him being day-to-day.

3. You're the ONLY person trying to shock-jock a story out of a virtual non-story. Try being more concerned about Dirk's knee. That's in-season, you know.

4. You really are a pompous douche after your last paragraph. You're riding the coattails of a guy who almost eliminated himself from the business for one, Richie and Newy wasn't going to evening drive. Plus take a look at the past and present "talent" at your station--you may want to back off of calling someone with a voice a fraud there, Sports Domino.

So, Richie, are you saying you think Hambone is back on the pipe? Why not call some people or ask Greggo's "spies" if they know anything? You know, be a journalist.

Of course, Greggo's "spies" also told us that it was 100% certain CLee would sign with the Rangers or Yankees. And the "spies" also said that it was certain that either Cliff or ol' Greinke would be a Ranger. And you never did call out Greggo's "spies" when late last season they told Greggo Ian Kinsler's ankle was hurt much worse than reported and he'd miss the rest of the year on the DL. Which never happened.

Maybe Greggo's "spies" are delusions from his own crackpipe?

As for Hamilton, I doubt this is anything scandalous since the Rangers are being so up front about the situation. If Hamilton was admitted to a hospital without them saying anything then people really would be wondering what was up and thinking the worse. Their actions here make sense.

But instead of hinting at something you think is strange, do your job instead of wondering what's up. It's amazing that anything is ever scooped any more with the lazy standards of reporting today.

What's the difference if it takes 5 days to get him healthy or 2 days? Their doing their due diligence and Josh is a pretty special case..not news IMO.

On your other claim about Ted Williams, well..if anyone can tell a radio fraud it should be you. You've been impersonating a radio personality for a almost two years right? Buddies with the Fish and Salisbury and the girls on the Fail..yep, your probably as good as source as there would be in spotting fake radio talent.

I do still think this is legit pneumonia, but the longer it goes on, the more you have to wonder WTF...

I realize I'm going to have to pick either reading your blog or listening to your show. Too repeaty for me, kind of like the Fan format. Also, in case you care, your 6 oclock bit sucks. The word game? That's as much as a give up as Ben and Skins Tournament Bracket of superheros or whatever that did for the given day.

Part 2, it wouldn't let me fit it all in 1 post:

Michael is owed $48 million for the next 3 seasons. Zambrano is owed ~$36 million the next two seasons with a highly unlikely vesting option for a third season. To makeup the ~$12 million difference, the Rangers could eat some of the salary difference or trade for another crappy Cubs contract. Some contenders could be Kosuke Fukudome ($13.5 million for 1 season), Carlos Silva ($8 million for 1 year including 2012 buyout), Marlon Byrd ($12 million at 2 years left; unlike the others though this isn't a bad contract), or John Grabow ($4.8 millon for 1 season).

Zambrano has a temper and has shown outbursts on the field, but has shown plenty of skill and is a front of the rotation starter when he can keep his emotions in check. His ERA was 3.33 last season (pretty impressive considering how awful he was before thrown to the bullpen for a short stint) and after he was allowed back on the team after "anger management" classes was 8-0 with a 1.41 ERA. At still only 29 and with Cliff, Greinke, and Garza off the table, he is not a bad starter to consider.

Michael would give the Cubs a team leader, something they are desperate for, and a big clubhouse guy. The only realistic place for him on the diamond is 2nd base and while he is a defensive liability there, his bat would minimize the hit and he is a clear upgrade over quasi bench guys like Blake Dewitt and Jeff Baker.

Just a thought, and something I think the Rangers should really consider if they want more insurance than a 2 years injured Brandon Webb in their rotation.

As well as a complete and total asshole for ragging on a guy just because he's made some mistakes. Too bad we can't all be as perfect as this douche bag "writer".

Yup. Sadly, this seems to be happening a lot lately.

Rehab isn't something you go into for a day or even a week. If the guy had a relapse, the Rangers would have made up a lie better than, "er um, Josh will be in the hospital for 24 hours."

Yup. Gotta agree. The word game is so boring and monotonous it damn near makes me tune back into the HL. I don't know who dreamed that up, or what made them think it was a good idea to begin with, but its a failed bit.
