Auburn 22, Oregon 19: My Top 10 Observer-ations

Auburn.jpg
10. Cam Newton = Overrated. I take it back. He ain't better than Vince Young was at Texas.

9. Sure he's corny at times, but I love me some "Big Game" Brent Musburger.

8. Props to Auburn coach Gene Chizik for running a play to wind the clock down and set up a walk-off 19-yard field goal by Wes Byrum at the gun. He trusted Newton to take care of the ball more than he trusted his kickoff coverage unit against Oregon's speedsters. Don't blame him a bit.

7. The team that leads at halftime is now 12-0 in BCS National Championship Games. Weird. And what was that I was saying again about Auburn having the edge in a close game?

6. Oregon's uniforms were as ridiculous as advertised. Feathers on the shoulder pads? Really?!

5. Why can't the NFL's instant replay system be as fast and as accurate as college football's?

4. Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley is a beast, but man what a dirty player. That twisting-the-facemask bullshit doesn't happen by accident. Takes a jerk to even consider it, much less execute it.

3. Football is king in Texas but, let's face it, Alabama is the king of football. That's two National Championships in a row.

2. Toldja Auburn would run at will over Oregon. How about 255 yards? Only surprise is that it wasn't Newton doing the damage, but more so freshman running back Michael Dyer. His biggest run was the 31 yards (from Auburn's 46 down to Oregon's 23) after he appeared -- but wasn't -- down. Never Say Dyer?

1. Entertaining game -- Oregon is fun to watch with its kickoff return reverses, fake punts and squirrely two-point conversion plays -- but not necessarily well played or impressive. TCU can beat 'em both. And you know it.

Wonderlic ace Vince Young had one of greatest college football QB seasons ever -- ever. But Cam Newton will be a much better pro because he has a brain and a personality. OK, half a brain. (He did steal a laptop and paint his name on it). Auburn would win 7 of 10 over TCU. More physical. You missed dirty Fairley's signature move - picking up QB and piledriving him. Did it at least three times this season before SEC refs started penalizing him. The feathers are pure Nike, but I hate 'em too. I did love the helmets and socks, though. Brent Musburger has found his second (and final?) wind doing college games. Who knew?

It was like watching two people who each got Madden 07 a couple of weeks ago, meeting, drinking and then playing "a big game" for $100...

Looking at the score, one would think that this game was extremely entertaining, but scores lie. There was absolutley nothing entertaining about this game. In fact, the last 5 national championship games have sucked ass.

As much as I love college football, I hate college football. Making us wait 37 days after the conference championships to watch this game is beyond ridiculous. Thanks BCS! Now on to some real football this weekend!

Your problem with Oregon's uniforms were the wings? How about the sock/shoe combo? Their helmet was pretty damn cool to me at least.

TCU could take Oregon. TCU would get whooped by Auburn, don't kid yourself.

That game was boring until the 4th quarter.

Erin Andrews isn't hot enough to be that worthless. And she's on TV. Applies even more so to chicks on the radio.

Cam Newton will fare better than Vince. I'd bet dollars to donuts he does much better than Vince's might-as-well-have-been-negative Wonderlic score because Cam isn't the mental midget that Vince is. And an athletic, big dude with a decent brain stands a good chance at success.

Why doesn't college football and the NFL have ground level cameras looking directly down goal lines? Seems to make sense even if only for the "broke the plane" call.

Entertaining game ? It was mostly 60 minutes of hurry up to the line of scrimmage and then 11 guys spend half a minute looking at pictures of douchie sports talk hosts and groceries on the sidelines, then hand the ball off for little to no yardage. Funny how everyone is giving all this credit to Auburn (and Alabama and the SEC) but if the guy who was under Dyer had just kept his arm motion going, he would have had a very easy strip of the ball and the final score could have been very different. His hand was right in there. "Really!?" = the worst crutch word in history of our nation. People without wit now think they have some just because they can substitute that one word for any real, biting substance that might follow whatever they are talking about. I know you think this makes you hip and edgie, but no.... just kinda lame really.

I generally like Brent Musburger, too. His "This is for the whole bag of Tostitos" line at the end was cringe worthy though.

Yep, feathers on the shoulders, just like the ones that were on the shoulders for every other game they played this year....Ironic that you work for a publication called "The Observer"

Also, instead of "Never Say Dyer," I would say last night's game was much more of a "Dyer Maker" in terms of his career and possibly future Heisman candidacy.

I agree with the assessment made by Junior Miller regarding how well TCU would stack up against these two teams: TCU would likely take 6 of 10 from Oregon, and Auburn would likely take 6 of 10 from TCU.

Last night, TCU would have beaten either team.

Auburn played a conservative game and Cam wasn't utilized appropriately (I'm not even sure he ran the ball until the 2nd half). You also may have noticed that he seemed to injure his shoulder in the 3rd quarter. Auburn knew they were the better team and played as if protecting a lead, even from the start.

Pretty good post RW. Alabama is doing well turning out NC's, the only retort I can give is that those places either pay more for players or retain more in state talent? Auburn escaped football probation in 2004 somehow, and Alabama was on 5 year probation in the early '00's losing two years of scholarships. This NC will be returned within the next 5 years RW.
