Dirk Screws Up, Mavericks Lose

Dirk vs. David? Ugh.

Love me some Dirk Nowitzki, the most underrated, under-appreciated athlete in the history of Dallas/Fort Worth sports.

Behind him and his finesse game of around 25 points and 10 rebounds this season, the Mavs will win 50-55 games and make the NBA's Western Conference playoffs as the 3-6 seed. But ...

When he screws up, I'm not afraid to point it out.

And in last night's 99-97 loss to the Hornets in New Orleans he effed up. Big time. He produced 29 points and nine rebounds, but on the game's key possession he got too cute from too far and wound up getting pantsed by David West.

Down one point with six seconds left, Dirk took an inbounds pass above the 3-point line and, guarded closely by long-time nemesis West, tried to create some space by dribbling - behind his back. West reached in, poked the ball away for a clean steal and made a free throw after being fouled to drop the Mavs to 7-3.

Coach Rick Carlisle tried to fall on the sword after the game, but no way.

Dirk will win his team plenty of games this season but nope, this loss is on him.

Said Nowitzki, "Just my fault really."

The performance: Very disappointing. The admission: Somehow refreshing.

In related news, my wished "failure" upon the Heat is working ~~like a charm~~ not at all.

richie again proves he is the stumbledoofus of writing/radio-ing. Carlisle is to blame for the last play. Drawing up a play that leaves Dirk as the only option 30 feet from the basket is TERRIBLE. Why Jet or Kidd, or JJ wasn't the one to receive the inbound to set up Dirk is a goof of almost Avery proportions.
It was Dirks fault bc he tried to dribble the ball and lost it, but he should have never gotten that ball in the first place..Not sure if that was a play or not, but Dirk is 7 feet tall, he should never, under any circumstances try to dribble...By the time ball hits the floor, and then his hand, there is like 54 seconds in between...Especially that far out from the basket...

Jamal, Scruffy, Jeremy are exactly right, and why you failed to mention Richie is beyond me. That was pathetic and lazy and inbounds pass/play as I've seen in a while. Barea just lazily lofts the ball up in the air which had more hangtime than a Matt McBriar punt. It looked like a David Garrard Hail Mary pass that was just lofted into the air for anyone to grab which was right to a Hornet. No Maverick was even 5 feet within the ball. Supposedly, teams work diligently on drawing up and practicing inbound plays in pre-season and practice. Maybe the shot doesn't go in or what have you, but to not even have a Maverick even near the ball and Gay Gay Barea heaving the ball up to see if he can graze the scoreboard was unfathomable.

As the Musers discussed this morning (2 hours before your post), I'd put this one on Carlisle. Barea in at crunch time is questionable, and the final play was not designed well at all. Dirk isn't a breakdown type of player, especially that far away. Dirk fell on the sword for a coaching error. Plus it wasn't Dirk alone who spit the bit in the 3rd and gave up the lead. Your failure wish was on Wade, not the entire Miami Heat like it should've been. If you're going for shock jock/shock blog at least try harder.
While Dirk shoulders most of the blame, I agree that I have no idea why Barea was throwing that ball in. On top of that, we need an effing PG who can play some D on another PG. Kidd is greatness, but his sporatic 3 pointers aren't enough to cover up his statuesque defense.
you forgot to mention the shitty inbounds bass from barea. in a situation like that dirk always gets the ball where he can catch it cleanly with two hands and go into the "triple threat" position. the way that pass was thrown in, he had to catch it on the dribble.
Why was Dirk getting the ball THAT far away in the first place? MEH.. thats a tough one pal.
