BREAKING NEWS: Josh Lewin Hired as 105.3 The Fan Juggles Lineup

The Fan - Rangers.jpg

Well, that didn't take long.

Less than a month after his nine-year relationship with the Texas Rangers ended, Josh Lewin has been hired by 105.3 The Fan to host a midday sports talk show. Lewin will debut in the 11 a.m.-2 p.m. time slot Monday, November 1 as The Fan unveils its new lineup.

Included in the station's switch: Greg Williams and yours truly will shift from middays to the coveted and more visible 2-7 p.m. slot, prompting a head-to-head-head afternoon drive-time matchup between The Fan's Williams, 103.3 ESPN's Randy Galloway (his former radio mentor) and 1310 The Ticket's Mike Rhyner (his long-time radio sidekick).

"After where I've been I'm just thrilled to be back on the radio," Williams says. "But now that I'm here, why not go ahead and kick some ass?"

Lewin is certainly an entertaining, polarizing figure. Seems like Rangers' fans who watched him and analyst Tom Grieve either loved or loathed his style. That quality, of course, gives him the perfect foundation to be a successful radio host.

Lewin's pop-culture references and hip baseline ran a thread through Rangers' games that most viewers wholly embraced but some flatly rejected.

In radio, of course, it's not so much that you're hated or beloved, only that you're not ignored.

"I am at a point in my life where the creative process means a great deal to me," Lewin says. "There's no better medium for self-expression than sports talk radio and no audience more passionate than the DFW sports fan. As much as I'm already missing Rangers' play-by-play, this is too good of a platform, too good of a station, and too good of an opportunity to pass up. It's quite simply a perfect fit, both personally and professionally."

As the Rangers' TV voice Lewin was always prepared and consistently a fun listen. He rubbed some of the old-school seamheads - like, ahem, team president Nolan Ryan - the wrong way because he too often filled 10-1 blowouts with Seinfeld over the staid intricacies of baseball nostalgia.

At The Fan, Lewin will be welcomed - encouraged - to offer his unique blend of infotainment while also allowed the freedom to be a broadcaster on Fox's baseball Game of the Week and the radio play-by-play voice of the NFL's San Diego Chargers. Again, those are weekend duties that ruffled the feathers of Rangers' fans, but won't be an issue at The Fan.

"There's no better time than the first World Series in Texas Rangers' franchise history to introduce Josh to our lineup," says Bruce Gilbert, VP of News/Talk and Sports for CBS Radio Dallas. "And we can't wait for the Fan fans to get to know the many fascinating facets of Josh's magnanimous personality."

Added Lewin, "This is going to be an absolute blast."

For Williams, Monday will commence another chapter in his resurrection. After cutting his teeth with Galloway at WBAP 820 and then dominating metroplex sports radio with Rhyner, Williams was off the air - for reasons that have been well-documented - and flirting with eternal irrelevance. In May he was unemployed and contemplating everything from a radio job in Milwaukee to starting a boat dock company on Lake Granbury. But since his partnership with me on June 1, our ratings have steadily climbed from 1.8 to 3.5 among Men 25-54.

In the September Arbitron ratings, The Fan ranked ahead of ESPN but behind The Ticket.

The station's new lineup beginning Monday ...

I miss Josh Lewin. Listening to the Rangers is painful. I like John Rhadigan but please...how did he get this job..he's so annoying and out of his league. Nolan Ryan you're an idiot when it come to announcers...but I like you as an owner.

Josh Lewin not a fan at all. Gave him a chance but he is quite boring nothing original or interesting. Better as a game broadcast guy.

What is going on with Jagger? He must be a piece of work and difficult to work with. He's had problems with everyone they've paired him with.

I can't say i have liked the people he has been paired with, but Jagger is worse than all his canned sidekicks combined. Something is up with him.

Earlier this week he was laughing and taking shots Barsky...he never called barsky out by name when he was taking these shots, but it was obvious that's who he was talking about. He kept insinuating that he was terrible at talk radio and he was glad they got rid of him.

Jasmine kept trying to change the subject...did anyone else hear this? What is going on behind the scenes at the fan? Sounds chaotic.

Well, given the events of the last week I am a little deflated. But I can still stay hard enough to F up you guys.

Think you can handle drive time? Up against Grand Pa Urine and yours truly?. Prepare to get pissed on. 5 hours? Yep, pay them peanuts, raise the white flag, and give them the afternoon and the drive time cellar. Hot having to pay for talent means they might cover their margins for 5 hours.

It's like listening to Sylvester the Cat talk about sports for hours. Sufferin' Succotash! I can almost feel the spit through the speakers.

I find it funny that all these ticket listeners claim the ticket has program "superiority" yet not only do they obviously listen to Richie and Greggo and some of the other programs but they also know about Richie's blog and take the time to comment on it. Haha. Like Newy's show, might tune out from Lewin, EMBRACE THE RAGE!!!, Gavin is hilarious, and Arnie is just annoying. Remember when he was on earlier in the day and that was when i began tuning out on the drive home or when i went out at night. Now I can stay tuned in and not have to worry about running into Arnie's voice. Good move Fan.

The haters will hate and the ragers will embrace. Good for Lewin and badass for The Fan. I'm stoked to start listening to Lewin. I will miss the G-Bag nation during my daily grind at the office, but will get at least a full three hours worth of rage.

I have been one of those guys who listens to Gavin & Gregg and cringes because of the teenage girl acronyms Gavin uses. But I have to say that yesterday's last show was hilarious. Though there were times when I thought that Gavin & Gregg were annoying as hell, they worked really well together.

Many of the solo shows on The Fan have been somewhat difficult to sit through. Newy is unbelievably knowledgeable, but it feels like he needs someone else to banter with besides Arman. Gavin solo? Ugh. Gregg was needed to help temper Gavin's arrogance.

The constant rotation of morning talent? Frankly, I see Jagger as the problem. Barsky would provide more funny moments than Jagger. Jagger just sounds like a pissed off guy sometimes who is slow with the jokes. Hopefully Gregg can help punch up the morning show. And keep the gloves off, Gregg. You're funny. Don't dumb it down for Jagger. And don't can Jasmine, either. She's the voice of reason.

And the one person that can annoy the crap out of me, but is by far the best solo show on the station? Arnie. He's got a big mouth, and can totally fill his time slot with his boisterous attitude. He just needs to lose the neglected step-child routine. No one is feeling sorry for you, Arnie.

My "gentle musings":

1. Barsky sucked, but not as bad as his once cohort... who is now going to replace him. Is Jagger that horrible to work with that he can't keep a co-host? The Musers own this market (with the help of Gordo's voices).

2. I agree that Newy is not bad and a local Newy is better than a national anything (note for the tools at ESPN).

3. I can't wait for Josh. Good times if has a good on-air producer that can double for a sidekick. He is witty, knows sports and definitely has HSOs. And I don't think he would have been hired if he wouldn't be allowed to flex a little. Go Josh Go. It doesn't take much to best McDowell.

4. Greggo is not quite the drop machine of old, but he's great. For 5 hours? Richie, work with him and get him to trust himself again and this will be a colossal war of ratings. It was only a matter of time before Greggo was allowed to moon Corby and Rhyner ("And 'is dead' is just dumb"). As for GAC? Isn't that the Ian show with guest 45 minute cameos from Gramps Urine?

5. Gavin riding solo? I'm out. As bad as the G-Bags were, they had chemistry. Now, it's dead right when it was getting branded. Bad move, and you'll see.

6. Arnie is over the top but late night is where he belongs. Although BDH would be nice, if Arnie gets some marketing behind his timeslot, he should do well.

It's impartial banter. The Ticket runs this market, but they know it and it's time they give a damn about the people that made them so big in the first place.

Yes, Hardline. We're talking to you.

I've become a loyal listener to RAGE. I've noticed the shots at Greggo from the HL boys have increased since he joined The Fan. They are still an 800 pound gorilla; why do they bother? An obvious manifestation of Mike's enormous insecurity. Greggo is clearly in their heads. I will be truthful and say I will listen to the HL too. -If you're doing the best show, you will get my time. At least now I can tune out when the HL has Doucher Music Snob Talk. Good job RW and Greggo!

WashHater
WashHater

Richie, please please please please tell me that, some time in the next six months, Greggo will use his clout to get them to boot Arnie in favor of BDH.

I tend to listen late at night, and BDH late nights was great.

Corby is beyond annoying. I switch between the dials during drive time.

GAC can be interesting when Galloway is not doing his bits, "Um. Now, Mosley. Mosley. Uh. Ah. (whisper)how 'bout them Baylor Bears?(/whisper) Okay. Back with the FIVE. Next! Ohn GAC!"

Hardline is funny when Corby is not talking. His jokes now consist of repeating what Mike likes incredulously, "Wow, Mike. Freaking American. Idol. Seriously." 'Tisn't comedy, folks.

Gavin and Gregg can be eyeroll-inducers. Gregg is totally out of his realm there. He's trying to hard to be Regular Guy That Isn't in to All That Stupid Stuff etc. As any comedian will tell you, 'no' isn't funny. Gotta go along with stuff dude.

Gavin can be funny. Comes off a little shock-jockish but that isn't horrible.

I'll hang up and listen.

I didn't realize how many losers there is in the DFW until I read the comments on this post! You guys are going nuts and are way to "into" talk radio lineups. Its sad it affects your lives so much. God forbid the ticket go under, because you losers would have nothing to look forward to!

I guess this makes me a loser since I posted this along with you all!

so be it...

I don't understand why some of you bitch about Galloway. To me, he has always been the Dean of Sports Talk Radio around here - yes, even more than Norm. I was listening to Galloway when Jimmy Johnson called in and made his famous "You can put it in three inch headlines" declaration. Used to love the football firing line. I hated when he was moved from WBAP and his 6pm time slot. I would listen to the Ticket all day and flip to Galloway at 6pm. When he moved to ESPN and 3pm, I would flip back and forth between the Hardline (when Hammer was still there) and GAC. Once Greg Williams left, I permanently switched to GAC at 3pm. Call me nuts, but I've also always enjoyed hearing Dale Hansen on the radio. In my opinion, Galloway and Hansen have the best HSO's in the market. Obviously, not everyone agrees with me. Just my two cents.

Dude I feel like Arnie just completely got hosed. Who listens to radio until 1am? If you have to keep Dawson switch him with Arnie and other than Jagger's unlistenable show, you've got yourself a solid lineup.

I am a G-Bag Nation Fan and will miss the G-Bags being together. That being said. Richie and Greggo in the spot will dominate. I wish they could have moved more pieces though, keep G-bags but put them in the lunch slot and move Josh or Newy to the 7pm slot.

Fan Feedback

*5 a.m. - 9 a.m. - Jagger, Gregg Henson and Jasmine

As previously mentioned, just about any morning show can't compete with the genius Courage Boys. You could bring together Roger Staubach, Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman, Emmett Smith, and the ghost of Tom Landry to host a morning show together and I think the Musers would still dominate. That being said, Barsky out and Gregg in...and...that's it? I don't think Jagger and Jasmine are as bad as some make them, but it's not my thing and very FM wacky. And it's no Musers.

*9 a.m. - 11 a.m. - Newy Scruggs

Newy is very underrated and does a good job by himself. Newy knows his sports and is one of the more smarty sporty radio talkers in town. I think he overdoes it though and could use some more guy talk/Ticket schtick formula hosting. I think he was MUCH better with Richie around and would likely be better with a sidekick who would goof around and keep a balance of sport and funny fun times.

*11 a.m. - 2 p.m. - Josh Lewin

I wonder if Josh will let down his guard and throw out some HSO's on the radio. It would be juicy if he threw out some Rangers HSO's after being let go by old school Nolan. He showed on the Rangers broadcast he has a good sense of humor, but I think he'll need to up it even more if he wants to compete vs BaD Radio. I'll be listening.

*2 p.m. - 7 p.m. - Greg Williams and Richie Whitt

It's really great to have Greggo back and although Richie gets a ton of junk thrown at him on here, he is a good sidekick who keeps things on track and let's Greggo be Greggo. I am definitely rooting for you guys and I hope this will also make the Hardline try harder and quit the mailing in.

*7 p.m. - 10 p.m. - Gavin Dawson

The G-Bags were radio abortion and I'm not sure this is a good idea. The Fan hand picked him from Portland or something right? Maybe they see something in him, and there have been supportive comments of him on here, but I just don't see it. I'll give it a listen and hopefully he's a lot better without dumbass Gregg.

*10 p.m. - 1 a.m. - Arnie Spanier

I like Arnie and this is very reminiscent of his old days following The Ticket lineup at night. Arnie should go away from the sports page more and joke around, but as for X's and O's types he isn't bad. I wish he was on earlier though maybe teamed up with one of the other solo hosts.

Overall: I subscribe to Greggo's chaos theory and love that he's going up against the Mike, Corby, and Danny show. Juicy radio deliciousness and drama to the highest order. The Hardline has mailed it in for years and I think RAGE may turn some heads and this should help gain more listeners. I wonder if The Hardline talks about it or ignores it? You know the Hardline faithful would switch over for a bit if they knew the Hammer was on at the same time.

I like the move here and hope Gavin doesn't suck like I fear he probably will. Lewin is an interesting hire but I hope he can throw out some HSO's and not be nice but dull guy on radio. I think the Rangers broadcasts are likely be very boring without him. There's a difference between interesting broadcaster guy (lower expectations) and interesting radio guy which he will need to be if he expects to compete with BaD Radio.

In closing, PUFFFF DADDDDYYY!!!

Randy

Besides Barskey, Gavin definetly got the shaft with this line up shake up. During baseball season his show will be canceled all of the time. Some weeks his show will be canceled every day. Sucks for him, he deserves better than that.

Zephyr

How good can Gavin Dawson be? After all, he'll be working during most of the events he's supposed to be talking about.

This is horrible. The Fan higher ups keeping Fing us listeners around. As soon as we get used to a lineup, they change it on us.

Arnie and Gavin are some of the best talents on the show and Arnie gets jerked around all the time. Now he is on at 10pm? Gavin at 7, I wont get to listen much anymore maybe when my wife falls asleep early.

I think the best shows are the shows that have 2 hosts, I am not big on the solo shows.

Meat

Now I will need to bump The Fan up to number 2 on the car presets. Good for Josh, I've always been a fan of his, but I can see how he rubbed people the wrong way. Curious to see how he reacts to some pissed off redneck when they call in..he seems too nice to go off like Norm would.

I'm sad to see the G-Bags out of the afternoon drive, as they made my afternoons very entertaining. I'm even more sad to see the G-Bags separated as I felt Henson and Dawson had a very good chemistry and the way they played off each other. Gregg Henson with Jagger? I'm not so sure about that and how can you get rid of Barsky? The guy is a legend in radio and you just cut him loose? I think he could have been a good fit to stay with Jagger and reunite with his old afternoon co-host, Gregg Henson. Needless to say, I'm not too happy about the move, because I could care less about RAGE going up against The Ticket. 5 hours is also a little too long. I'm not that happy with this move, but I guess I'll have to live on. It's going to be much harder to listen to Gavin now and I consider him one of the better personalities on The Fan. Good luck 1053 The Fan, you won't lose me as a listener, but the times I listen may change.

Good to see some much needed changes, but I'm not sure about all of the solos. I like Newy, Josh, Arnie and Gavin a little bit. I like to see some good chemistry, but I think this is just a prelude to some more changes. That effing morning show is ridiculous.

Im not sure why Arnie got the latest shift, and think he and Gavin would be good together. Can anybody tell me how Arnie has done in the ratings ?

5 hours is a looonnnnggg time. I'm really glad yall are getting to do your thing in a more listened to spot though. Anything to get the idgit Barsky off the air. Richie, I think you guys are doing well. I do think that the Greggo listeners are starting to make their way back. I also hope that with the better spot, the distractions that are Armen and hot chicks will start to take more of a back seat.

TheRealDirtyP1

Wow. Big fan of Josh Lewin here. I was already tuned into RAGE during that timeslot, definitely tuning into Josh, he has something. RW is getting better. Drive time good enough? Alone no, with Greggo, he's the wild card. I think you need one more person that's strong, but who knows. Really not sad to see the GBags off of drive time. Glad Gavin is still around, bummed about Barsky, kinda like the guy, more than Henson at least.

Scotts Merkin
Scotts Merkin

Im a little disappointed Rage is moving, I liked them from 11-3 but I will not get to listen as Mrs Merkin and I will listen to the Hardline as we have forever. As for the rest, Cant stand Jagger talking sports, can Josh fill 3hrs by himself, I bet Gavin excels now that he gets away from 12 yo potty humor henson, he (gavin) should have got morning drive or the 11-2 slot.

Randy
Randy

Could it get any juicier than this? Do you think The Ticket ever thought for 1 second when they fired him that he would ever be back in the same time slot competing against their precious hardline? I hope RAGE dominates them! I have been sick of the Hardline for a long time and FINALLY I can stop listening. I hope you guys really bring your A-game though. I will definetly tune in everyday, but i know there are a lot of weirdly devoted ticket listeners that will listen to the ticket all day regardless of the crap they are spitting out. so those people will need a great reason to tune the hardline out, and i do think its possible! Words of advice though...sybil and lacey add nothing to very little to the show and amren needs to improve on the drops. sometimes what he is dropping is either really stupid or doesn't make sense that it was dropped at that time and for the love of god...get rid of f-ing bucky!

Bravo to the Fail, Josh is a welcomed addition to any sporty talk station. I always loved him when he filled in for Norm. I'm in. Now, Rage for 5 hours? If y'all make the girls stay off the mike and Armen pulls a Former Mayor of Coppel and y'all can make 5 hours into 3 hours..seems like there will be more changes.
