Whitt's End: 8.27.10
*By no means am I an alarmist, but we need to see something positive from the Cowboys' first-team offense Saturday night in Houston. One long drive that ends in a touchdown. That's all. Give me that and I'll pronounce the team ready for September 12. With only one season-ending injury (John Phillips), I guess we call training camp a success.
*Of course, it's amazing anyone gets injured in a Wade Phillips camp. Three times over four days in Oxnard the Cowboys "practiced" without helmets. Helmets! I can see half-ass walkthroughs with no pads, but that's like me practicing writing without a pen.
*Did I hear Rangers' ace Cliff Lee getting booed last night? (Edit: Is C.J. Wilson actually their ace?) Lee has been mortal his last three starts, was horrible in last night's loss to the Twins and the Rangers are 3-7 in his starts. But remember, he was 2-4 with a 6.13 ERA down the stretch with the Phillies last year before going 4-0 in the playoffs. Just sayin' it's a little early - much less harsh - to boo. Right?
*Emily Jones > Jim Knox.
*An estimated 20 percent of drivers say they have driven drunk the last year. The government is spending $13 million on "don't drink-and-drive" ads in advance of Labor Day. Two thoughts: 20 percent is waaaaaay too low, and what a waste of money. Problem is, all the warnings are trumped by stories of guys who have had five DUIs and never spent a day in jail. People don't truly fear the ramifications.
*The Cowboys will not wear blue jerseys this season. Weird. I grew up in the days of the "blue jersey jinx", where my household would groan when we'd see the first shot of Busch Stadium and Roger Staubach in blue and know our team was in for a tough day in St. Louis.
*Buddy of mine was overpaid $300 on his most recent paycheck. He's asking me if should A)Do what's right, be a good employee and report the mistake or B) Spend it quick and hope no one ever notices. A, of course. I think. Well, on second thought ... Beeeeeeeeeeeeee?
*Chuck Greenberg tells me he has "200" fan-friendly ideas in store for next season.
Maybe of course that's hyperbole, but you gotta love him. Anyone missing Tom Hicks?
*Those 33 miners trapped in Chile sure look happy. Arm-in-arm? Singing? Is it just me or does something smell fishy here?
*What's up with Tom Grieve and all the baked goods talk? Kinda makes Rangers games sound like AA productions if you ask me.
