SI Cover Jinx: University of Texas?

Not sure I get all the hype over Texas this year. I know the Big 12 media picked Oklahoma to win the South, but Texas is ranked No. 4 by Sports Illustrated and - uh-oh - on the cover this week.

Last time I checked UT lost a quarterback named Colt McCoy and a receiver called Jordan Shipley and defenders who went by the call signs of Earl Thomas and Sergio Kindle.

No biggie you say?

Garrett Gilbert wasn't a disaster in last season's BCS National Championship Game, but is there any doubt that Jerrod Johnson is better?

And, by the way, is this the year that Texas A&M is finally better than the Longhorns?

RW has drawn me out of the woodwork. Gilbert won't make anyone forget about Colt, just like Colt didn't make anyone forget about Vince. That's not the question RW. The question is, is this years Longhorns team any good? That question will be answered on the field, not in the Sportatorium. Gilbert will be a dominate force for the horns, is my prediction. Mark that down and PUT IT ON THE BOARD. Aggs should worry about BU (I love Robert Griffin) and TT and OSU and ARK, long before they concern themselves with heady stuff like U of T and Zero U and Big 12 championships. I think that UT and OU and NU all have the best chance to win the Big 12. But everyone has holes, UT has a relatively untested QB, no depth at DT and young WR's. OU has Landry with Bell waiting in the wings (Look out for Bell, if Zerou loses a couple then Bell will be getting a look) a very young and inexperienced Oline..Dline and no WR depth. NU doesn't have a quarterback whom is familiar with the vertical passing game. I'm outa here till September, unless I'm needed.

Despite being a lifetime Longhorn hater and the son of an Aggie alum, I think A&M needs to first worry about being better than Baylor before they start even thinking about being better than TU. Sherman seems to finally have them headed in the right direction, but it's still a long road to hoe.

Wait, are we really giving Gilbert enough credit to place him in the "Best QB" discussion? Why? 66% of his passing yards in the NC game were to a guy who graduated, and even then, most of those "passing yards" were earned on the ground by Shipley after the catch. Texas' only saving grace is that they get to beat up on nobodies for a couple of weeks before having to play a serious team. Their offense better take every confidence boost they can, because they'll need it. Great defense or not, they'll need points and right now I can't see where they'll be getting them from.

The only fans worse than UT fans are Aggie cult members, at least UT fans don't buy a car in burnt orange. But don't claim to be diehard if you couldn't get admitted to UT Arlington, much less UT Austin. I have no problems with alums, but they aren't the vocal annoying fans--it's the GED set that feels the most need to let you know that it's Horns or Die. The same set that Arnie seems to like getting a rise out of.

Scruffy sounds like an envious aggy who wishes aggy had t-shirt fans. Richie, did aggy get a defense since last season? Sure, Jerrod Johnson is probably the best QB in the Big 12 but the aggy defense is among the worst in the Big 12. They have exactly one decent player in Von Miller. Scruffy I'm sorry but your response is moronic. I'm pretty sure about 60% of the fans of every division I school in the country never set foot in that school's classrooms. If I have been a UT fan since I was 6 and you went to school at Tech or OU or A&M 15 years later, does that make you a real fan? I'm 26 years old and I've been a fan of UT since I was a kid, it doesn't matter if you ever went to school there. Being a fan means being a fan, not alumni.
Best D in the country? About four SEC teams might have a beef with that.
A suitcase full of Bud...whats wrong with that? I can't tell you how many tshirts I've received from relatives that are the cheap Walmart kind. You can't wear them in public, too cheap. They feel like polyester when you put it on, it's always too long and too thin in the middle, and the longhorn emblem is already peeling after one wear. Only thing you can do is cut the sleeves off and cut the yard in it. Please tell me you all cut your own yard(s)? The lady next door has a crew come twice a week even though her rap rock, tatted out grandson sits in her house all day and does NOTHING. It pisses me off cause I can hear the Korn or Insane Clown Posse over the din of the mowers. I can just picture his 5 foot three body throwing gang signs and moshing as her money is being flushed down the toilet. The people on the other side don't bother to mow. They have trash heaped up high and tools all over the yard......ahhh, West Plano! The second my tire hits the grass though, I get a $100 fine from property standards.

It's all about newsstand sales to frontrunning UT fans who claim diehard status but have never set foot in a classroom in Austin, much less are members of the alumni assocation. You know the ones--they'll pick it up at Walmart when they're there to buy a Longhorn shirt as cheap as possible and a suitcase of Bud.
Thank you C for clarifying that. And this is a magazine Richie. They gotta sell magazines and come up with whatever on covers for people to buy into the hype. If this were Eastfield College, the newstand there would say they have they have a really good chance to win the chess championship before the season starts.

Richie, you know these are regional covers right? Boise, Ohio State, and Alabama are all on the same issue cover as well. They've been doing this for a few years now for pretty much all their *insert sport here* preview issue.
