Hey, HP Byron Nelson Classic, I Got An Idea

Romo Golf.jpg
With Phil Mickelson out and Tiger Woods out and golf pretty much dead, this year's HP Byron Nelson Classic in Irving May 20-23 will be much ado about nothing The Pavilion.

What's new, right?

That could change, if the dudes in red pants would think outside their yellow-roped box and give an exemption to a certain player. A football player. Who happens to be damn good at golf ...

Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo shot 72 out at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney Tuesday afternoon. He advanced to Monday's next round of Nelson qualifying, which might conflict with the Cowboys' first OTA (Organized Team Activity) of the spring at Valley Ranch.

The Nelson, like most PGA events, has a handful of exemptions it can use to invite special players into the field (past champs, celebrities or Annika Sorenstam/Michelle Wie ring a bell?). Romo wouldn't win the tournament.

But he would certainly create a buzz outside the big white party tent.
