Who the Hail is Mary?

Categories: Dallas Cowboys

I rip (make that ripped, past tense) Wade Phillips all the time, but, um, looks like Minnesota Vikings' head coach Brad Childress needs a history lesson.

On Dec. 28, 1975, the Dallas Cowboys traveled to frigid Metropolitan Stadium for a playoff game against the Vikings. Trailing 14-10 with less than :30 left, quarterback Roger Staubach dropped back, said a "Hail Mary" and let 'er fly. Down at Minnesota's 7-ish yard line, a certain Cowboys' receiver pushed off got separation from Vikings' cornerback Nate Wright and caught a 50-yard touchdown for a shocking, scintillating 17-14 victory.

Hail Mary is one of the most famous plays in NFL lore. The receiver was Drew Pearson.

He attended Tulsa, not Illinois. Nice try, Mr. Smug.

Wait, Miles Austin doesn't know about Hail Mary either?

<Rolls eyes. Kicks dirt. Gives up on life.>
