10. I'm not ready to pronounce it Doomsday III just yet, but that's some impressive defense being played by your Dallas Cowboys. The team's first shutout in six years on the heels of holding the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints to a combined 37 points? Two games against the Washington Redskins without allowing a single touchdown and last night they only crossed midfield twice? Only the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens have allowed fewer points? Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips take a bow. It is indeed fixed.

9. Think I'm in the minority on this one, but I love me some NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth.

8. Best I can figure, Cowboys can win the division and host a playoff game by beating the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday in Arlington. With a win they finish anywhere from No. 2 seed to No. 4. With a loss, they're the No. 6 seed and would play every post-season game on the road.

7. Next time you think you've had a rough year, call up Cowboys' assistant coach Joe DeCamillis and let him tell the tale of breaking his neck, undergoing an emergency appendectomy and dealing with Nick Folk. Joe D will stay in Washington until at least Wednesday, but I'll betcha a nickel he's on the sidelines Sunday in Cowboys Stadium.

6. My one gripe about the defense - in particular the scheme - is that it's never, I repeat never a good idea to have DeMarcus Ware drop back in pass coverage. When you have one of the game's all-time best pass rushers, why get too cute?

5. I'm a Keith Brooking fan. I embrace the fact that the Cowboys are playing with more emotion. But I'm sorry, his pre-game "We're gonna bloody their noses!" schtick smacks of contrived, over-acted theater. A little embarrassing, no?

4. Big difference in Tony Romo 2009: When he moved around in the pocket and finally lofted a perfect touchdown pass to Roy Williams in the first quarter, he searched and probed with the ball safely tucked under his arm, not dangling out inviting a fumble. Subtle, but dramatic. I've said all year he's a Top 5 quarterback. Anyone with me now?

3. 17-0 is impressive and all, but you and I both know that could've/should've been 31-0 or more. The offense botched the two-minute drill at the end of the first half, there were dropped passes by Williams, Miles Austin, Martellus Bennett and Sam Hurd, and the short-yardage offense - yes, I'm looking at you Marion Barber - is abysmal. If the Cowboys can't convert 3rd- or 4th-and-1 - Barber was 0-4 in the second half trying to get one yard - they're not going to win a playoff game. I'm all for imposing your will on your opponent, but not sure why offensive coordinator Jason Garrett chose to run consecutive plays at behemoth Redskins' lineman Albert Haynesworth.

2. The Cowboys don't have the cohones to do it and I'm not even sure if shaking up the lineup is a good idea at this point, but wouldn't you like to see Williams benched? He dropped two more passes against Washington and now leads the NFL with 11 by my count. After a drop in New Orleans he boasted to have the best hands in the league and last night he responded to a gaffe with a giant smile. What gives? Your kicker got cut for similarly blatant miscues.

1. So a win Sunday against the Eagles would clinch the NFC East and guarantee a home playoff game. That enough to atone for 44-6?

scott says:

Since its likely that BOTH Greenbay/@Arizona and @Dallas/Philly will play the same opponents in back to back weeks at the same stadiums, ... has this ever happened before?

Also, should the Eagles consider just staying in Dallas to practice and get used to the climate? If they do, I really hope the press doesn't continue its year long pattern of lavishing praise on the Cowboys as it will just pump up Philly.

Let's not start sucking everybody's dick just yet. He still has a while to go before we start annointing Ware as an all-time best.

Bradford's broken shoulder says:

Scott, not sure why the Iggles would need to stay over next week to acclimate for an temperature controlled indoor stadium? Anon: "one of" is the part of the sentence to pay attention to..he did damn near break the single season sack mark last year..
Me: my prediction of 9-7, 8-8 was wrong..screw me...but this late season run, I believe, is still a mirage..even if we beat the igges this weekend..they'll come back next weekend and wear us like Scott's pink #38 onesey..

Kevin says:

If they bench Roy Williams (which they should), he'll probably be out with a tailbone injury, because he'd miss the damn bench.

just thinkin' says:

Roy flashing his hook-em sign after a touchdown reminds me of the guys who give the lord thanks after a big win. They never mention God after a loss and Roy never shows the hook-em after a key drop. Wonder why? Also, DeMarcus Ware in coverage is the same thing as this horseshit wildcat mess. Why take the ball out of the hands of your best player (Romo) and let Choice handle it. Wildcat works best for teams that are weak at QB. Ever see the Colts run the Wildcat? Jason Garrett was about as good as "hands of stone" Williams last night.

Posted On: Monday, Dec. 28 2009 @ 10:03AM
CV Gilkeson says:

Roy Williams stays on the field because to bench him would highlight the poor decision of Jerry (the Owner/GM/real Head Coach) to trade for him and give him an expensive extension. If they did bench him I think it would energize the team and fuel a nice playoff run. However, I don't know jack because I had this crew pegged as 8-8 underachievers.

Matt says:

Yeah... I'm done with Williams. I would honestly rather have T.O. back than see Williams' stupid grin again. What good is catching a TD pass if you're gonna drop THREE other passes, and laugh about it?

Also, when is this guy going to realize he left UT six years ago? See link:

rofm says:

Romo will take Roy out of the lineup by not throwing to him. The look on his face after the pass went through his hands and got picked was priceless - 'I'll never trust you again.'
The NFC other than the top 6 teams is terrible. The Redskins offense is worse than terrible.
The playoffs will be the true test of whether the Cowboys are any good or not. Right now I don't know. Wins over the AFC West and NFC South and two over the 'Skins don't tell me anything.

Posted On: Monday, Dec. 28 2009 @ 12:45PM
Fletch says:

I guess that Roy Williams is holding onto his days at UT because he was a big deal at Texas back then and he's not really relevant anymore. That's the most recent era that he has to be proud of when it comes to his accomplishments on the field. That's why he's always got the burnt orange nearby. Maybe it's also his attempt to gain credibility through his past accolades while he has very little to show for the present. Who knows....

Meat says:

I was pretty bored watching the game last night. I probably only watched 15-20 minutes of the second half. I realize that makes me a fake fan in scott's eyes, but I want to be entertained, and last night didn't do it. Don't get me wrong, I'm jazzed that they won and all.

I'm still at a loss as to why the Cowboys run the wildcat. EVERY TIME Choice takes the ball and runs forward. Why not a sweep or an end-around or something different?

Posted On: Monday, Dec. 28 2009 @ 1:12PM
Eagle Watcher says:

Uh meat, they tried a reverse end around out of the wildcat last night and lost about 20 yards. The wildcat blows, just like scott

Sparky says:

Pre-season, I thought Romo was going to have a much better, more controlled year. Check.

I also predicted this was both Bennett and Roy Williams' breakout years. Ouch x2.

Wade should forbid Williams from making that stupid hook 'em horns sign (or, alternatively, require him to also do the OU version with the upside-down horns every time he drops the ball or tips it to a defender). How many times have you seen LT do the "horned frog" thing with his hand after scoring a touchdown?

Posted On: Monday, Dec. 28 2009 @ 3:09PM
just thinkin' says:

@ Sparky....very nice! Everytime I see Roy in front of his locker with his UT banner hanging or his Longhorns cap I think about the guys who go off to college and wear their high school letter jackets. Leave it behind, dude!

Dean says:

There's no defense for some of Roy's dropped passes, like the one last night. But for all of you amatuer football watchers, count the number of overthrown, behind and at the feet passes Romo has thrown, and I think you'd find they're pretty even. But all any of you remember, is the drops. Typical of fantasy football fans.

Posted On: Tuesday, Dec. 29 2009 @ 12:31AM
just thinkin' says:

@Dean...pretty obvious you love the burnt orange. Agree, Romo's passes aren't All perfect, but nobody blames Roy for the throws that sail over his head or are three yards behind him...just the ones that land between his grimy paws or the numbers on his jersey. And at NINE MILLION a year, there are TOO DAMN MANY of those. Hell, we torched T.O. for all his drops and I bet Roy has more drops than T.O. did last year.

Posted On: Tuesday, Dec. 29 2009 @ 5:42AM
scott says:

@just thinkin

I was curious about that for this year and saw this

http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/leaders.asp?range=NFL&type=Receiving&rank=232

The interesting thing is if you look at the delta between how many times he was 'targeted' and how many times he had 'receptions' this year, the delta is 49. 56% of time he was targeted, we did not make a reception which ranks him No. 2 behind the Cleveland receiver Mohamad whatever. Some are drops and many are passes way over the head and whatnot. There are two problems here and both are bad. A drop of the 3-5 passes a game he gets and there are uncatchable passes too, more so than Miles.

They have one more game and the bye week to fix this, though.... and we do have Mr. Fix-it on staff, so not to worry.

Posted On: Tuesday, Dec. 29 2009 @ 7:52AM
Matt Chappel says:

@ Dean

You say: "But for all of you amatuer football watchers, count the number of overthrown, behind and at the feet passes Romo has thrown, and I think you'd find they're pretty even."

Right, so how come Witten, Austin, etc. can CATCH those balls?

Posted On: Tuesday, Dec. 29 2009 @ 1:46PM
Anonymous says:

Matt, obviously Romo is throwing those passes to everyone else dead on and purposely trying to get rid of Williams.

The thing thet makes an awesome receiver is making plays out of those unplayable passes.
