Stars-Gazing: My Top 10 Hockey Observations

Stars-Bruins2.jpg

10. Went to Bruins 3, Stars 0 Friday night. First hockey game this season. Dallas didn't look good, but the experience wasn't half-bad.

9. If you haven't been to American Airlines Center in a while, prepare to be dazzled. The four-sided HD video screens on the over-hanging scoreboard are fabulous. There are also two new video boards at each end of the joint. The things were in place when I went to the UFC event last month, but they're even more spectacular for a real sport.

8. Hanging around baseball clubhouses and football locker rooms makes you forget, but not all professional athletes are pricks. The Stars are accessible and amiable.

7. So Boston has this mammoth player. Towering over people. Relatively speaking he looks like Gheorge Muresan. Turns out Bruins' defenseman Zdeno Chara is 6-foot-9. Impressive.

6. As if the Stars' Ice Girls weren't head-turning enough, have you seen these dancers up behind each goal? They wear leg warmers, which is cool. But they also wear what amounts to nothing more than bras and those boy-short panties, which is hot.

5. On this particular night the AAC was deader than Zombieland. The bench wasn't buzzing, coach Marc Crawford mostly stood in stunned silence (except for a tongue-lashing of Tom Wandell) and the biggest crowd uproar was for the Texas fight song, the always uncomfortable-yet-entertaining Kiss Cam and the ridiculously drunk stripper on the glass who kept sloshing beer and shouting "Let'sssss Gowww Mav-eee-wrecks!"

4. It didn't feel like Stars' hockey without Mike Modano, still out with a cracked rib.

3.
I sat exactly two rows behind the Stars' bench and got a different perspective. The game is crazy physical. I get that. Some player (I was too fascinated with all the blood to catch his name) took a puck off the left cheekbone. What I don't get is the shifts. As in, why are they so short? I know skating is difficult. But it's not harder than, say, running. Can you imagine Jason Kidd playing three possession before heading to the bench for a breather?

2. Marty Turco looked awful. Couple of quirky bounces - one off a skate - for goals, but one shot he just totally whiffed on with his glove. Less than 24 hours later backup Alex Auld played well in a surprising bounce-back victory at powerful Chicago. Goalie controversy? Or just peace of mind that Dallas has a competent backup?

1. As I'm leaving I'm thinking the Stars (who, by the way, host the Los Angeles Kings tonight) suck, that Boston must be dominant and the two are clearly headed in opposite directions. Sure enough, the Stars are 3-1-3 and the Bruins 3-4-0. Oh H-E-DoubleHockeySticks, what do I know?

Steve says:

Yeah, it is harder than running.

And running? LOL. They call it 'walking the ball up the court' for a reason. There's a lot more walking and standing around than actual running in an average basketball game.

And congrats Richie. It only took you 16 years of hockey in this town to figure out the game is 'crazy physical'. It's insight like that has more and more of us showing up here to see how stupid your opinons are, rather than how smart they are...

I was in attendance too; oH the ice girls..where do you find girls that hot that can skate? They also need thinner, white tops so we can 'see' if they are really cold out there

Rhinosaur says:

Chara's been playing for a while, just now being noticed by Richie "I get paid to cover sports" Witt. Funny. Steve is right in making fun of you.

Shifts are that short because they have to be...very tiring. And there's more constant movement than in football or baseball.

Last year the Stars had perhaps the worst regular season loss in franchise history to the Bruins, so losing 3-0 to a superior team doesn't mean it's time to throw up our hands on the season.

Brian says:

It's quite a bit like running actually. As in sprinting and stopping and starting and pushing on someone the entire time. Get yourself to a Starscenter Richie, put on some skates and then try skating a hockey suicide as fast as you can. For more realism have someone beating on you with a stick the entire time and see if you aren't tired after a minute. Rest a few minutes and do it again. Repeat for an hour.

WashHater says:

Skating is definitely harder than going up and down the court in basketball. Since you compared it to basketball, skating is more like doing wind sprints up and down the court. Has someone like Shaq ever even done a wind sprint?

Glad to see ya went to a game, and hope you keep going. The Stars are a good group of people and organization, they deserve the support.

BeefSupreme says:

Damn RW... was your jab @ MMA really necessary dude, I mean REALLY??

As for the Stars, yes they got worked by the B's but I have to disagree w/ your Turco observation for that particular game.

There was a stretch that had he not been on his game, Boston could have been up by about 6 to 7 goals instead of just the 3.

The team has a much different approach under Crawford. His strategy is to filter in the scoring opps from the blueline and w/ young D-men like Daley I can see that working here.

Good to have captain Morrow back - the dude has been insane this year!

*** Don't forget, UFC 104 this SAT. Lyoto 'the Dragon' Machida defends his LHW strap against Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua - should be a good one

Chip says:

One other NBA vs NHL comment...aside from the skating being physically harder, hockey players also have to cover more distance. A NHL rink is 200' long (and 85' wide) whereas a NBA court is 94' long (and 50' wide). So, a NBA player only has to cover less than half the distance from one end to another (and why the Mavs can sell an extra 1500 seats at their games).

Richie Whitt says:

@Steve: I didn't say I just realized it was crazy physical. But thanks for showing up here anyway. You're welcome anytime.

@Rhino: Complain about no hockey coverage, then belittle the writer who covers hockey and makes observations about players he's never seen because he rarely covers hockey. Weird, the writer suddenly remembers why he doesn't cover hockey. Aw, I'm just kidding. Chill down.

@Jeff: See Rhino above.

@BeefSupreme: Jab at MMA? Damn we're touchy today peeps. What gives?

@Chip: Only rational comment of the bunch. Nice save.

@RW: yes, definitely not a good night for the Stars, and yeah, Chara's a freaking giant. It was still just a helluva time. As a relative newcomer, I'm already convinced that no game is better live than hockey, and none translate as poorly to TV.

And I'm also glad to see much less of the "cocaine and boob job" crowd than at Mavs games. Those people are a whip (ok, not the boob jobs as much).

Note to Ice Girl with Joker Mouth: you might wanna tone down the nuclear teeth whitening. I can see your grill from 8 sections away.

you might be an ignorant slut, but i'm glad you actually went to a game and actually posted about it.

you should make a trip to a starcenter, strap on some skates and see what it's like out there.

i'm glad you showed respect to how awesome this game is by noticing up close and personal how "crazy physical" it is, which is why they can only go out for short shifts. If you'd been paying attention you'd know that Crawford has been trying to force the players into shorter shifts to keep their energy levels up. In hockey, if you get caught out on a long shift you're more likely to commit a penalty or get beat on defense and give up a goal.

but i still find it frustrating that a guy like you with the OBVIOUS dislike of hockey that you have gets access to Stars games and players. Yes, they're very amiable and nice. Maybe that's because they play in a non-hockey-loving market where they enjoy anonymity. So as much as i hate on you for NOT covering the Stars, I'm sure they love the fact that people don't bother them every waking second like they do in Montreal or Toronto.

in closing, thank you for going to a game. but you need to pay more attention. and you need to follow what's going on with this team.

for anyone reading this who actually want to follow the Stars, visit (and i can't believe i'm promoting the Dallas Morning Snooze) Starsblog.dallasnews.com Mike Heika is the Stars beat reporter, he travels with the team and has all the insight you could ever want.

Keep sluttin' it up, Whitt.

p.s. Ice Girls? i prefer the term Sno Ho's... and they're the hottest in the league...
