One Year Later: The Cowboys Overpaid for Roy Williams. Duh.

Roy Williams - Receiver.jpg

Seems strange timing to bemoan the Dallas Cowboys' receiving corps in the wake of Miles Austin's record-setting day, but let's face it - the trade for Roy Williams a year ago has been a gigantic flop.

My first reaction to news that the Cowboys had acquired Williams and a 7th-round pick in 2010 from the Detroit Lions in exchange for a 1st, 3rd and 6th in 2009:

Wow, initially that seems like a lot.

(The Lions, by the way, turned those picks into Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew, Penn State receiver Derrick Williams and TCU running back Aaron Brown, all of which are in Detroit's regular playing rotation.)

With Terrell Owens sent packing in the off-season, Williams was supposed to be the man. Hasn't happened. T.O. has been a non-factor in Buffalo, currently 104th in the NFL with a whopping 12 catches. But Williams - signed to a $45 million contract by owner Jerry Jones two days after last October's trade - is even less impactful.

After last year catching only 19 passes and one touchdown in 10 games, this year he's amassed 11 for 214 yards and a score. In other words, Austin basically trumped him with Sunday's historic 10-catch, 250-yard performance.

In 15 games in Dallas, Williams is averaging a whopping 2 catches for 27 yards. In a calendar year as a Cowboy, he has two touchdowns. He has, however, questioned his role. So it's not like he's been totally invisible.

As I was calculating the futility of Williams' non-production last night I flipped on Monday Night Football and was presented with two words that made me cringe even more: Braylon Edwards.

Granted, Edwards is the kind of knucklehead Jones has done a fantastic job of shooing away from Valley Ranch. Speeding tickets of 120 mph, partying with Donte Stallworth the night he got drunk and killed a pedestrian, punching LeBron James' friend. No doubt, he has baggage.

But watching him go up and get the ball - I mean, really go up and get it - is something we're still waiting to see from Williams.

And the price the Jets paid to get him? Compared to Williams, New York stole Edwards from the Dollar Store. To get an elite receiver who in '07 posted 80 catches for 1,289 yardsd and 16 touchdowns, the Jets parted with only backup receiver Chansi Stuckey, special teams ace Jason Trusnik and two low-round draft picks.

Cue slump shoulders. Re-boot criticism of Jerry Jones the GM.

Keep it up Mr. Football man. Doing a helluva job Jerry. I want him to go find two more just like him. No first round picks ever again!
It isn't worth getting pissed off about, but I can find some sarcasm.

eattrn says:

Jerry can't judge talent and that should be a well known fact to everyone by now. He has hung around Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells enough that he thinks he can but has never done it on his own. Never, not once has Jerry had a winning football team without someone putting it together for him.

Roy Williams (the receiver) says:

Look, you people in the media don't know what I can do. I know I've been in the league long enough to make no one's highlight reel and lesser receivers have accomplished way more in way less time cause I want it that way. Only I know what I can do. Course I'll never show it on the field cause then you people in the media would know what I could do and you would twist it around cause that's what you people in the media do. You think you know Roy Williams but you don't and you never will. I'm just gonna keep pretending I'm an egotistical douche whine-bag who likes to sigh autographs half naked cause I'm a closet homosexual but I will never, NEVER show you people in the media my true skills cause you don't know me like that.

MushMouth says:

The problem is Garrett's offense. Williams is best when he runs patterns with quick cuts and precise throws from the QB. That's something that a real football GM considers before making a trade. The strengths of the talent have to match the scheme. The one positive aspect of his game has been his down field blocking.

CV Gilkeson says:

The biggest mistakes our "GM" makes is in evaluating talent already on the roster. Jerry overpays incumbent talent in the misguided belief that a player happy with his contract will play well. We are paying run of the mill starters based on the 2007 13-3 aberration, not on their actual 8-8 to 9-7 performance. Jerry paid Roy Williams like he was already elite when no one in the league considered him as such. Roy Williams is an 8-8 guy, not a Super Bowl contender guy. When he is exclusively running the show Jerry is a 6-10 GM.

Meat says:

Probably a dumb question:

When Jerry gives control of the team to Stephen, is Jerry still going to be GM or will Stephen act as GM, or will Stephen hire a GM and be a little less hands-on?

Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 13 2009 @ 11:47AM
Gravypan says:

Dunno.

I'm hoping that when Stephen gets control of the team, he pulls a Rocky Wirtz and has a complete 180 degree philosophy on how the team should be run.

scott says:

Serious question here....

Is 'Roy Williams' failure here more about Tony and Roy not having the right chemistry or not clicking? Most passes I've seen thrown to him are not on the money, though some have been and dropped.

I'm wondering this because as I fan, I still want to believe they have a chance this year and this would say they might be able to develop more chemistry in the coming months.

PS Totally agree that Jones overpaid here

He's also been a Pro Bowler, but that doesn't necessarily make you worthy of being a #1.

WashHater says:

@ Richie - Rooster brings up a great point, actually. When you're on the radio with him, you should ask Jerry how much tape he watches on a week to week basis.

Just couch it like "To give our listeners who may not be aware how demanding it is to be a GM in the NFL, how much of your week do you spend just watching game tape?" Could be fascinating.

DOWORK17 says:

To all the Roy Williams bashers out there, next time you're watching a game, please just take note of how many times Romo throws the ball clear over Williams' head (the best example of this would be the Denver game, but its there in many others) or how many time the ball gets thrown to Witten when hes got two guys on him before any WR could possibly be out of their break. I've been saying this ever since last year, T.O. was right, Romo doesn't see the field and we need to replace him. Now.
