Your Sports Blogosphere Landscape

• No. No. No. Its not blogging, or the internet , TV, radio or opinionated journalism that killed newspapers. It's the economy. Its a 200 year old industry that is slow to change with an ever-changing world. In a way, I guess you could say the internet did its fair share of damage. But not in the way that most people think. As a long-time former newspaper employee, I am proof positive the newspaper industry is in real trouble. I was part of the massive layoffs in this area. See, those little ads for your old lawnmower, someone's job opening, the new car dealer and, yes, your deceased great-grandmother were what paid for the paper to begin with. Not Mr. Whitt or Galloway or Bob Ray Sanders' columns. Revenue from readership barely pays for the cost of the actual newspaper. Its the classifieds, the advertising dollars that ultimately pay the salaries of those mentioned above. And when people turn to free Craigslist postings, Legacy.com for obits, CareerBuilder for jobs and Yahoo! News to get information, well, there is little argument as to why the newspaper in its current form is a viable option in our microwave, youTube, iPhone society. For the most part, the days of waking up at the kitchen table with a homemade cup of coffee and the Morning edition are over. It has been replaced by a spikey haired Gen-X'er sitting at the table of a Starbucks drinking a 5-dollar half/caffe waiting for his laptop to boot up so he can update his Twitter/Facebook/MySpace. And oh yeah, see if the Mavs won last night. And of course, check out THIS blog.

• @shitty Get a grip on the modern world. It was some no-name blogger that broke a story last year on Bill Clinton. It isn't the first time and won't be the last. You think the HuffPo is just a bunch of opinons? Fox News is nothing but that. Fox doesn't even pretend to be objective. Every newspaper in the land has an Op-Ed page and amazingly that is where the big dogs are on the staff. Gee what a concept! Let the lower level staff go out and do the legwork and let the upper division sit upstairs and spout off some hot sports opinions. I think it will work! Oh wait, we already do that. If you want to cling to your deadtree editions, that is fine by me. It means you are at minimum a week behind me. Laters. Eat my dust.

• I still receive the WSJ daily. Still read the DMN. The issue is profitability. The problem is stupidity. Journalism/reporting has been capsized by the blog. Blogging is, by and large, ill-informed opinions. Those who participate in "bloggery" are not Journalists or reporters. They are lazy. Look at the Huffington Post. All opinions. Same thing on the other side of the political fence. The same slipshod writing exists under the sports mantle. It's all shit.
