Sorry Rangers Fans, You Don't Deserve the Playoffs

Rangers Ballpark - Empty.jpg

I raised the white flag a while back. Apparently you guys finally gave up, um, last night.

With the Texas Rangers in the middle of a pennant race for only the fourth time in their 37-year history and Cy Young candidate Scott Feldman pitching against a very beatable opponent, an announced crowd of 13,669 showed up Monday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

I watched some of this on TV and it didn't look like more than 9,000. At one point I heard Ian Kinsler calling for a pop-up.

Shame.

Wanna know what a good sports town looks like? There were 38,000 at Wrigley Field in Chicago last night and 20,000 at the Metrodome in Minnesota and 20,000 in San Diego. All three are farther out of the playoff hunt than your lonely Rangers.

So, go ahead, blame the rain and the school night and Monday Night Football. But admit it, this isn't a baseball city. It's a fair-weather winners city.

This weekend's against the Angels will produce three sellouts.

If not, there's always next year. April 5, anyone?

This week's series against the Angels will produce three sellouts???? No effing way.
The weather has really hurt this month, but the general fans aren't buying in.

Crowds for this weekend:

Friday - 22,000
Saturday - 29,000
Sunday - 19,000

I think this forecast is VERY optimistic. Cowboys have started, Millwood/Holland have collapsed, Hamilton/Young injured, Fans have moved on.

I'll be there tonite amongst the 12,000. Sunday was about 8,000 after the 5 hour delay.

This is a winners town, but if the stadium were in downtown Dallas where it belongs, I guaranDAMNtee attendance would be better.

Sorry to disappoint the GuidoMerk, but tried to get tickets for Saturday, they only have standing room only.
Ticket operator said 45,000 on Saturday.
Over 40,000 on Friday night
between 35,000 and 40,000 on Sunday.
Call now operators are standing by for those of you that have moved on, standing room only for Saturday.

Are we surprised that a team that has brought its fans nothing but disappointment would have a fan base like this? And I fully include myself -- I gave up when they lost to Toronto on August 31. You let the other team go up by 11, then get within 1 run, then lose by 8? ("EIGHT?!") That's the sign of a team with an unprecedented amount of Give Up.

This is gonna take a year or two before people will start coming back. I said it before, put that park Downtown and they would draw min 30,000 per night, regardless of how bad they are.

Arlington is such a beating drive... especially on a Monday or Tuesday. I went on Sunday night for game 2 and I swear there were no more than 3,000 people there. If the thing was in Dallas, I would probably average 4+ games per month compared to 4 games per year.

Andy Atchley says:

Enough with the put the park downtown crap.
One playoff win in their history, 10 seasons of 3rd and 4th place finishes and if the game was in downtown Dallas tonight, you would end up with the same attendance.
Whatever you think you gain from a move downtown, you are going to lose from Tarrant County.
Move it, roof it, finish 3rd or 4th for the next 10 years and the attendance does not change. Did a new ballpark in downtown Pittsburgh make a difference?
Atlanta? Atlanta can draw with 13 straight division titles downtown.
Winning puts asses in the seats.
They are up 15% this year in attendance.
Again, winning puts asses in the seats.
Most of you seem to forget the empty arena when the Mavericks sucked.

Sure, there should be more fans showing up during a pennant race, but it rained all day long for 4 fucking days. The picture above was clearly taken during a delay. Of course fans are going to stay home and watch on tv instead of going all the way to the Ballpark to get soaked for a game that figured to be delayed or even postponed. Hell, it was raining at my place DURING the game. Fuck that. I'll wait and drink their 6 dollar beers next Saturday.

DFW is clearly Cowboys country, but even a diehard baseball fan was going to think twice about going to that game last night.

Hammer, meet nail. Doesn't matter where the ball park is, no win = no fans. Unless, of course, you're talking about Wrigley and Lambeau in the 70s.

@ Mr. Whitt: I understand what you're saying about the other teams drawing better than the Rangers, but, having lived in Chicago for years, it's unfair to throw Wrigley in that category for a lot of reasons.

@Hicks is Evil: Good point. Still pathetic though.

@Bill: Three Divsion 1 schools.

Kevin says:

It doesn't matter if it's in downtown Dallas or Frisco - if it's a bitch to get in and out of the parking, people are going to give up. Why has Arlington never thought, "Gee, maybe one of them DART trains would get people out here?" Oh, right, because they're not in DART, they gave their money to stadium builders.

You can get to Wrigley on the El. The team has a 100+ year tradition (ok, a sad tradition, but nonetheless.)

Fans go to watch games. If you're surrounded by putzes trying to impress clients and talking on their cell phones, and it takes 45 minutes to get out of the effin' parking lot, I'm not going back.

When you need a baseball fix, go to Grand Prairie and see the AirHogs or Ft Worth and see the Cats.

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 15 2009 @ 5:55PM
cactusflinthead says:

Arlington isn't part of DART because they don't like buses. That was voted down long before Jerry ever approached them. They should absolutely get on board and get something going with the TRE. That's where I go when I head over to the AAC. I get on in FW and I get off at the arena. Brilliant!
It wouldn't matter where they put the ballpark though. If we don't think there is a chance of a win there is far less motivation to go to the game. The echo chamber of Reunion during the years of futility is a testament to that attitude in DFW.
This weekend was mostly about the rain. The tickets were apparently sold, but nobody was willing to make the trek in shitty weather to potentially sit there for an extended period or go home with the game postponed. There were 8000 diehards out there. If they sucked this year, it would have looked like Cleveland.
Remember them RW? They actually have been to the playoffs and sniffed at the golden cheese of victory and they had tens of humans in attendance. Winners draw crowds, losers don't.
Somebody said attendance is up 15%. Is this true? If it is, then that is evidence that people are willing to drive to Arlington if they think there is at least a chance of good things happening. Hicks, the economy, suck ass traffic, none of that matters if we think there is a good chance of them doing something.

Hicks and MLB dont care so why should the fans? No major moves before the trade
deadline (except grandpa pudge), they can't sign their number 1 draft pick. They get their ass kicked by seattle and oakland to make the upcoming series against the A's meaningless. Now the players are crying because the fans are not showing up? Are you paid any less because the fans are not there? Suck it up you bunch of pussies and play ball. You've got more than 10 years of sucking before fans will just blindly show up to support your asses. Some of have to work for a living, so shut up and go play your little game...

If SMU can do something this year, I'll add them back to the list. Until they kick the Death Penalty vibe, hard to justify giving them the time of day.

The Rangers need to get over themselves. 1 run in 3 games?
Who the F wants to watch that trash?????
Like other people have said, there is not atmosphere or anything else going on at the ballpark. You can't compare Wrigley, if there's a rain delay there are other things to do.
Arlington is a beating of a drive from Plano, I can't do it more than a couple times a year.
I take the kids to Frisco, and the games are fun.

Roadside says:

Hmm, whats wrong with that picture? Ushers in raincoats, everyone seated under an overhang. Could it be ... weather? Yeah you can blame the weather. The treat of rain out has been with us every night since last Thursday. Looks like rain to day too. So I am supposed to brave the weather, remote parking a walking in the rain and park my butt in a wet seat for the slim chance they will actually play the game?

Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 16 2009 @ 8:54AM
Rooster says:

"Can you blame people, after years of Hicks ownership and mismanagement."

Bingo. Dropped my season tickets the year after Hicks said he wasn't going to invest anymore in the team until I spent more money.

Haven't been back since.

Won't go back until new ownership arrives.

If this means I don't "deserve" the playoffs, then so be it.

I think the fact I have stood by a team that has only won ONE, count'em ONE playoff GAME in in THIRTY SEVEN f'ing YEARS has to count for something though.

Sooner or later, the team has to give something back....You can't suck for decades and then expect everyone to do backflips because you actually have a shot at making the playoffs one year.

Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 16 2009 @ 9:59AM
P1Javier says:

You're an idiot RW. Fans have nothing to do with deserving the playoffs. If that were true, the Cubs would go every year. We are not the ones going out there not scoring runs against no name pitchers on teams who threw in the white flag back in July. Who cares if fans show up or not? The players are still making their millions each year. They should play their best regardless who's not sitting in the stands.

Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 16 2009 @ 10:20AM
Timbo says:

It should be required that any journalist or talk show host who rips fans for not supporting any team list exactly how many trips he's made to the stadium or ball park that season.

I'm a big Musers fans, but they couldn't understand why Rangers fans weren't showing up for playoff run. Fernando was REALLY putting down Rangers fans...even though the last MLB game he's been to was in San Fran.

Seriously, Richie. You media guys get to enter the stadium free and even park free. I'm guessing that Hicks hasn't put much dough into the press box spread, but you can't rip fans for not showing up when you have FEWER reasons to stay away.

You say you bailed a while back. Then don't write a blog header that tells Rangers fans they don't deserve playoffs.

Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 16 2009 @ 11:05AM
WashHater says:

I swore when they traded A-Rod that I would not go to that ballpark until Hicks was no longer the owner. We're close to it happening, I cannot wait to get back out there and root for the Rangers again.
