Whitt's End - reaper.jpg
Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*At the risk of ruffling more Ticket feathers, the station treated one of its first-time, long-timers like shit rudely during its recent gaggle of 15th anniversary celebrations. The way I remember it, Mark Elfenbein was one of the station's original voices. Pretty sure he's been doing weekends for the full 15 years. He's even hosting their Mavs post-game show this season. Considering that loyalty and seniority, I was shocked that Elf had neither a spot on stage for The Ticket's birthday party at the House of Blues nor a vignette in The Ticket anniversary book: Full Disclosure. Oi Vey. (Attention 105.3 The Fan management: If I hang around doing weekends until 2024 and then get excluded from our 15th birthday party, there'll be hell to pay.)

*Good news on Megan Cherry, the Allen High School soccer star who disappeared recently. Apparently some issues to work out with mom and dad, and perhaps a formal charge against her for stealing the family car. But first things first, she was found alive and well in San Angelo.

*When you watch ESPN and the scroll says "Julius Peppers gives Panthers list of four teams he will agree to be traded to, including the Cowboys," don't you imagine Jerry Jones having an orgasm? Grotesque image, I know. But, seriously, that's the kind of superficial attention he absolutely lives for. Right?

*What's more intriguing: The return of Mike Leach or the return of Tiger Woods? Gimme a golf ball over the goofball, by a good 330 yards.

*George Strait? Really? After I questioned his relevance earlier this week a commenter challenged my challenging of "King George." Swear, for the rest of the day I was trying to determine exactly how Steinbrenner figured into the equation.

*Does he strum a plain guitar, wear jeans, boots, a black hat and sing "The Dance"? No? Oh, right, he does all that stuff except he sings "The Chair." George? Garth? Clint? Silly me, how could I ever get them confused?

*Hot: Tiger Woods' wife.

*Not: Tiger Woods' sport.

*I heard a lot of eye-rolling when I mentioned last week that Plano's own Taylor Hooton Foundation would return to the forefront now that *A-Roid fessed up to using steroids. Didn't take long.

*Seems like every time the Stars win a couple games and I start to pay attention one of their big names gets hurt. Brenden Morrow. Sergei Zubov. Brad Richards. Missing anyone? Seriously, if they make the playoffs coach Dave Tippett deserves a gold star.

*I love the NBA and double-love Monty Python and triple-love The Holy Grail, but Kevin Garnett's "Quest for G" commercial somehow doesn't do it for me. Should, but doesn't.

*I read a sentence this week that shouldn't have surprised me, but shocked me nonetheless: "White children are now fewer than one-third of the 1st-graders in Texas schools."

*Me? Tonight I'll be at Luis Yanez' professional boxing debut at AAC. Saturday I'll be live and in living color on 105.3 The Fan from 1-4 p.m. at Texas Stadium. Sunday morning I'll be back on from 7 a.m.-11 a.m.

*And, oh yeah, almost forgot. Happy birthday, 'buh-ruh. You know who you are.

Agree 100% about the Elf

Kije Ramsey says:

Yeah Richie, I also noticed Elfs absence. The Bottle Rockets were great to listen to on Sunday morning. I still have the Bottle Rocket Marathon t-shirt from year 1. I guess The Ticket was focused on making all listeners think Corby was a day 1 employee.
I haven't read Full Disclosure but I hear there is no mention of Jennifer Smith. I know she wasn't a day one host but I think she had a fling with one of the morning host who wasn't married at the time. He also likes bike riding.

Old Man says:

One of the underutilized assets of The Ticket is Elf - a loyal soldier who had numerous chances to escape the nurturing biosphere of the Mothership but stayed loyal through the first 15 years.

@Kije Ramsey:

Jennifer Smith is back in Dallas and appears to be doing great.

Old Man says:

@Ritchie:

Show Laura Davies some love!

She would 1) outdrive all of us by 50 yards and

2) bench press you - maybe at the same time.

LL says:

Right on Richie!! My husband and I have been P-1's since the start of the lil Ticket. Elf has been a huge part of the Ticket. My god, who can forget the Bottlerockets, Elf and his fathers roundtables. Geez, we went to the HOB 15th birthday party and thought it was a bunch of crap that Elf was nowhere to be found, not even in that freaking book. Elf rocks!

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 20 2009 @ 3:02PM
Kije Ramsey says:

@ Old man
I was just wondering why she wasn't mentioned since she was known as The Devil after she left.

Russ Martin's Elf says:

Richie,

You do a much better job covering all things sports on your blog with 3-4 posts a day then that shitty station the Fan does all day. Kick the jagger show off the air and give you the AM slot. Then the Fan might gain some credibilty.

Peace Holmes

DirtyP1 says:

Yeah, Elf being left out is crap. I probably need to read the book before I make judgement, but it's not too shocking to see people left out.
Richie, we need more of Tiger's wife.

batman says:

why in the world would anyone dis Elf like that? bunch of crap is right. talk about a team player that could probably get his own gig tens times over. shit, he's a day oner for christ sake! kill the catman for not giving Elf his due!

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 20 2009 @ 4:03PM
Alexis says:

I read the book and it has it moments. Leaving Elf out of the book is a crock and not being on stage for the 15th House of Blues celebration was even more of a joke.
Boyter, get a clue when writing a book!

jesse Jackson says:

The book was pretty good. I would have liked to have seen some stuff on the various night time hosts (including BDH).

I suppose it was all about keeping it a certain length.

Name that Dude Singing Like a Rolling Stone says:

In regard to your comment on the groans about the new marriage between Don Hooten and ARod....

I will jump on scott's pink team bandwagon of Fatass38 and say the Cowboys should keep him and start him at all 11 defensive positions, induct him into the Hall of Fame and call him the greatest safety ever before I ever give Hooten an ounce of credit.

He and ARod are the perfect marriage! Two frauds, nothing more nothing less. Hooten's lack of ability to take inventory of his own home leads him on his crusade? The guy's kid milks hundreds to thousands of dollars out of their (the parents) checking account, beats fellow classmates to a bloody pulp in fits of rage, appears with acne all over his back, had roof raising fights with his then girlfriend but yet the coach loses his job and credibility? The coach and the administration is at fault according to Hooten. The coach sees the kid about 5% of the week as a whole. The parent has the kid in house for 10 hours out of the day or 42% of the total week and it's the coach's/administration's fault? Give me a freaking break!!

These two frauds can go talk all the steroids they want and look themselves in the mirror and lie until their hearts are content. I ain't buying it and neither should anyone else that hears this verbal diarrhea that spews so freely out of both of their pieholes.

Sincerely,

I love Roy Williams

BeefSupreme says:

I agree that not giving even a quick shout-out acknowledging the Elf's contributions is a crime, but sadly I have come to expect these kind of oversights from much of the staff/managment at kTicket these days...

Despite all that, I still have the dial on 1310 to/from work and when out to lunch. The sad reality is Dallas radio just has nothing better to offer.

Now if 105.3 dropped that has been "Change of Heart" host, moved the Newy/Callishaw ego battle to the am; kept K-Scott where he was but replace Greg Hill w/ our favourite Sportatorium blogger, moved Ben and Skin to mid-days and lured BaDD over for afternoon drive... I may just forget the daily reminders encouraging all the P1's to be one

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 20 2009 @ 7:48PM
Allen says:

More Richie on the fan! Keep up the great radio, just need someone new to work with. Since elf has been screwed by the ticket...what a piece of bullpoopy that he did not get his props in the book or at the party! Damn Richie, maybe you and elfman ought to do a show together. That would be rockin.

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 20 2009 @ 9:40PM
gabbo says:

Agree with B Supreme above...

I've tried to give The Fan a chance, but they just manage to mess up their linup.

Jagger's show is the same generic Kid Craddick style 'morning zoo' show found anywhere in America. Not funny, not original - just lame.

K-Scott has something, but Greg Hill is a baffoon. He destroys that show.

Newy can be OK, him and Coop had a poor man's PTI thing working with ESPN. But Salisbury is such a dick, that he turns off any viewers. Rule #1 of sports radio, you should be someone your listeners would hang out with at a sports bar watching the game/talking sports. Sean comes off as the angry blowhard who everybody is hoping leaves at halftime.

B&S do a good show - but don't need the third wheel.

But if they just juggle the lineup a bit, they'd have something.

Pete Kerrigan says:

The Ticket proved during their 15 year anniversary that the their management's appreciation to their employees were restricted to the dozen or so "weekday ego heads" No regard or acknowledgement was given to any of the hard working long term employees serving in roles as producers, board operators, etc. I overheard many well known producers and employees at the show speak of how they had to "beg" to get through the door and were treated like "step children" The fact that Mark Elfenbein stood in front of the stage (wasn't given a reserved seat) and not a single selfish sole on that stage ever noticed he wasn't a part of the presentation or gave him a partial mention.

Very sorry anniversary Ticket Radio!.....you showed your management's true colors that night. Since you've crapped on your own people why don't you spend the rest of your focus on stopping the bleeding from your sagging ratings while you're well on your way to your slow death.

PS: I don't need a coat hanger attenna to pick up "The Fan" on the radio

Posted On: Friday, Feb. 20 2009 @ 11:00PM
dominic says:

what the hell was donny doo on stage to begin with at the HOB party? you the one that has been there from the start and know the good stuff. I'm on board with Pete above. The Ticket pissed all over Elf by not giving him his due! That man has done it all for the Ticket since day one! Hell, he should be full time. Yo, Elf you still got the best show brutha!

Paulo says:

Leach resigning with Tech yawn, Tiger Woods back in golf, HUGE!

Elfenbein getting stiffed by his co-horts and Cat, biggest bunch of ego's around!!

The Ticket ought to be ashamed of screwing a loyal employee like Elf.

Roland James says:

Man if I worked at a place for 15 years and they treated me like that, I'd walk the hell out. The P-1's are with you Elfenbein.

Come on Ticket,do the right thing.

Red Skies at Night Guy says:

This crying over Elf is pathetic. Sure he's been "on the air" since Day 1, but for the VAST majority of the 15 years he's been a footnote. I'm sure he's a nice guy and does some fine "sportstalk," but geez, let's hold off on putting him in the Ticket Hall of Fame.

Why didn't they put Sporting News Radio hosts up there as well. Elf's Sunday morning show is nothing more than an extension of generic Sporting News.

Maybe Donnie doesn't have the historical significance of others, but he's a current host and you couldn't leave any of them off the stage.

Sounds like Richie's trying to do a little recruiting for his new digs.

Posted On: Saturday, Feb. 21 2009 @ 10:48AM
ChrisU says:

okay so we can't set you Strait, but please don't equate him with Garth and Clint. that'd be like saying Justin Timberlake is as great as Prince.

Posted On: Saturday, Feb. 21 2009 @ 12:28PM
Fraggy says:

richie, you and elf had great chemistry on your sportstalk appearance. would def be a great morning show on the fan. that's crap the way they did elf with the book and all. elf is one of the best hosts on that station.

Jeff Catlin says:

Richie -

Hey, man, got a minute? Look, we had you in, we took a look, and a listen, and your Fake Lowvoice tough-guy routine just rang...false.

As far as our losses, have you heard that Pete Stein left Atlantic? I don't know how we will make it up against shows that feature transplants who give themselves nicknames. M-Rod? Really?? M-Rod? Dear Lord.

I do miss hearing K-Scott tell stories about doing reverse-grip lat pulldowns and watching men seriously hump other men in the Octogon. I prefer my wrestling scripted, Kevin.

So, in short, Richie, nice job jabbing at Corby. You clearly took your best shot, and clearly missed by a mile. Just keep us in the headlines. Twerp.

Name that Dude Singing Like a Rolling Stone says:

This from the Dallas Morning News and Todd Archer....

"Jones said the Cowboys will make some roster moves this week, but not because they need room to slide under the $123 million salary cap. Two candidates to be released would be safety Roy Williams and backup quarterback Brad Johnson, which would create roughly $4 million in space, although Jones would not get into specifics."

Let's get ready for a jersey burning party, everyone bringing their #31 and #38 jerseys. Looks like some of us may be having a banner week!

Sincerely,

President of the Cut Roy's Fatass Club

@Old Man: Showing Laura Davies some love = grotesque.

@Russ Martin's Elf: 'Preciate it. But I hear Jagger gets great PPM ratings. Will post about them soon as I get my hands on them.

@Allen/Beef Supreme/Fraggy: Gracias.

@Name: Certainly Hooton has regrets over how he raised his son. But to call him a fraud? Seems harsh. Let's see if his foundation can make a dent first.

@Red Skies: Weekend dorks have zero recruiting power, sad to say.

@ChrisU: I gotcha. Justin = Prince turned my stomach.

@Anonymous: Yeah, I'm trying to get hired at The Ticket. It's my life's dream. But if you insist I give it up, well ...

@Jeff Catlin: Fake LowVoice? Cool. I always think I sound too twangy and squeaky. Besides, you had me a twerp.

Posted On: Monday, Feb. 23 2009 @ 2:58PM
Name that Dude Singing Like a Rolling Stone says:

With all due respect Richie, fraud is not harsh enough for Don Hooten and was actually toned down a tad. He had the audacity to take this to the top of the P.I.S.D. school administration blaming his son hanging himself on Blake Boydston, the baseball coach with the lame ass excuse of "he told my son he had to get bigger and stronger". He never told him not to use steroids and that was not an invite to take them.

I was in the Plano school system and in the baseball program at Plano in the early 90's. I was told to get stronger and faster and in no way shape or form was that an invite to take steroids. It was an invite to me that if I wanted to make varsity as a junior I needed to work my ass off period. These freaking parents these days that want to blame everyone but themselves is fradulent and Don Hooten is at the top of the list.

....with all due respect!

Sincerely,

Me
