What About Bob?

After a weird, wild week of name-calling, foundation-shuddering, letter debunking and a he said/she said spanning Florida to Hawaii, the bizarre tale of Bob Hayes' Twisted Sister finally has a temporary resolution, if not permanent closure.

The current verdict: Bob Hayes, Jr. - and not Lucille Hester - will be front and center Aug. 8 in Canton, Ohio to unveil the former Dallas Cowboys' Pro Football Hall of Fame bust and accept his ceremonial gold jacket.

Throughout last week the preponderance of evidence indicated that Hester misrepresented her relation to Hayes, produced a fraudulent document at the Super Bowl and annointed and appointed herself family spokesman without authorization. Hester may never admit guilt, but it's clear that - after a face-to-face meeting with Hayes' only son Friday at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu - she has at least agreed to step into the background.

"I don't know if you wanna say she backed down or what, but Bob Hayes, Jr. will unveil his father's bust at the Hall of Fame," long-time Hayes friend and business manager Ted McIntosh told me Saturday on 105.3 The Fan. "He'll be front and center, not her. That's all the family has ever wanted. It's what Bob Hayes would've wanted. That's why I brought this out in the first place. Now my work is complete."

There remain questions about Lucille's birth certificate, the Hayes foundation's purse strings, the letter, the forgery, the possible criminal charges and her role in the family's future. And, in the wake of the supposed Family Feud cease-fire in Hawaii, I found it a little odd that no member of the Hayes family represented Bob on the field during last night's introduction of Hall of Fame members at halftime of the Pro Bowl.

But for now, McIntosh can enjoy a peaceful night knowing his best friend is no longer restless in his grave.

"The Hall of Fame is something Bob dearly wanted," he said. "It should be one of the happiest days of his life. Now it can be."
